  • This video is on “ Distillation: How to Select the Column Operating Pressure“. The target audience for this course is chemical and process engineers and chemical engineering students.
Column operating pressure is an important parameter in distillation process. It has an impact on vapour -liquid equilibrium, relative volatility, and cost of utility and the cost of column itself. Hence selecting the operating pressure of the column it is an important decision in the design of distillation column. This video focuses on steps involved in selecting the operating pressure of distillation. A worked example is included to make the understanding easy for the viewers.

    Awesome video and great content.
Just want to know, the column operating at 16.6kgf/cm2g, once the total vapor gets condensed
What would happen to the pressure in reflux drum?
    Will it remain same? Or
    Will it decrease?
What would be ideal pressure in reflux drum now?
From my understanding, the pressure in the reflux drum should be equal to the vapor pressure of the mixture at the existing temperature, is it right?
What if I subcool the liquid to 30degC, the pressure in the reflux drum gets much lower than 16.6?
Can you pls discuss about this? In total condenser system, will there any difference in column top pressure and pressure in reflux drum after complete condensation??

You are discussing two different aspects. One how to decide on the column operating pressure. Two how to control the column pressure. In a conventional distillation column with pressure being controlled by controlling the utility flow rate, the pressure in the column top and the reflux drum will be the same. I presume you are a working professional. There will be an equalising line connecting the column overhead vapour line and the reflux drum . This will take care of the of the pressure variation in the reflux drum due to level variation .
In some processes sub-cooling is needed. The pressure control scheme will be different. I would recommend you to watch the video on" Distillation column pressure control" where this scheme is explained (hot vapour bypass scheme)

Yes, I am working professional, just for clarity, I would like know, being hot bypass vapor in completely closed condition and Total vapor getting completely condensed. What will be the pressure in the reflux drum?
Column pressure of debutanizer to be at 14kgf/cm2g.
Will it be same 14kgf/cm2g or less, if so why?
If it is less, how can I quantify its value logically at reflux drum?

May I know, Vapor pressures are calculated at what temperature ??
