  • While we've been doing this restoration project on our old 1977 CJ-5, a lot of parts have been replaced to make sure critical components are fresh and new. The mechanical clutch linkage gets that treatment in this episode as we install the linkage and put our pedals back in the tub. We found another little bit of our reproduction tub that wasn't exactly quite right, but a little work with the hand grinder sorted things out.

I came DANGEROUSLY close to putting the new clutch linkage parts in place without painting them!

I have headers inside the frame “ yes they do sound good” but the older I get I’m considering putting the stock manifolds and single exhaust on it. My linkage Broke on me yesterday thought that I would watch a few videos on it. Great job can’t wait to see more.

    Hi good show!
Now I'm thinking about replacing my cable clutch to the mechanical clutch. Thanks for all the info.

Nice video. Thank you for posting this. I'm not quite at this stage yet in my CJ7 restoration, but I've been thinking about this step since I'm putting together a custom exhaust and concerned that the clutch linkage will interfere.

Cool. I started a CJ-7 restoration but the "donor" vehicle turned out to be sort of a disaster so I had to turn back to my original CJ-5. Hope this helps you! Thanks for watching!

@@LandlockedNoMore Very helpful and my exhaust went together with a tiny bit of clearance to clear the linkage. Won't know for sure until I get the tub on the frame, but things look good so far.

do you have any videos putting the steering together for your CJ5? I have one and looking to replace my steering to make it less "wobbly"

Have you watched this one? ruclips.net/video/PMijZJtnSUA/видео.html Might be what you're looking for but I'm also doing fresh tie-rod ends and steering knuckle bushings so I'm hoping this thing drives straight and true...

I have a 77 CJ5 and I believe the clutch pin near the firewall broke back in 2018. A mechanic did an adjustment so I could continue driving it, which worked, till present. Now, it rattles and vibrates a lot when backing up. I took her in to a shop and was told I need a new clutch and they’d have to pull the transmission to replace it, which would take 10 to 12 hours of labor not to mention the time of putting in a new clutch! My question is do I need the new pin and rod you show in video or a new clutch? Any ideas?

Well, to begin, if you truly do need a new clutch, then yes, the transmission needs to come out to replace that. However, if the linkage is the issue, that's relatively easy to replace and does NOT require the transmission to come out.

I have a 1978 CJ7 304 and that clutch linkage piece that you said goes to the throw out bearing lever. What is that one little part actually called?

Well, I can't seem to find the exact name for it, but I think it the Clutch Adjuster rod. This link to the part on Quadratec might be helpful: www.quadratec.com/products/52000_00.htm

Would be more understanding if the vid was regular speed.

Got it. I'll stop fast forwarding through the technical work. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!
