Hey guys I apologize it took so long to get this video out. Given my experience with the last unit I wanted to ensure that I had plenty of time with this head unit to give a good review. I hope you guys like the video and please let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!
Just ordered the android 13 version of this for my 13 Tacoma. Right now the truck has a Pioneer 7" double din in it that begun to act up on my last trip. Ive been looking for something modern that I could add that wouldn't take away from the simplistic interior look of my truck. I never liked the 7" pioneer double din because it just never looked right to me in the truck. I am a simple guy myself and like to keep things simple. Really all I need the unit for is android auto and to be able run GPS and Spotify. Yes I know its an expensive unit just for that, but most importantly to me is that it fits the look of my interior. The craziest part about it is I rarely even drive my 13 Tacoma anymore. My daily driver is now my 22 Tacoma. I only drive the 13 when Im hooking up the bass boat and yanking it down the road for a fishing trip, but when I do drive it I need everything to work. My only concern with the unit is the lack of a subwoofer out, but Im sure I can use something like an AudioControl LC2i for the subwoofer. I guess Ill see how it goes when I get the unit.
Thanks for the review! I appreciate the honesty on the price-point and that there are simpler solutions for the Apple Car Play problem. While this head unit is a bit out of my budget, especially considering the other mods I’d like to do, I still enjoyed seeing a review on all the upgraded features on this white whale. This is easily one of my favorite overlanding and especially Tacoma channels. Keep on truckin Brother
I have this 2nd gen unit in a 2014 now for over a year. Absolutely love it besides the occasional AC blast glitch that you seem to have cured. Could you plz do a small tutorial on how to go about getting cellular hooked up to the head unit? I have the sim adapters and know where the sim slot is, but Verizon was confused when I went in to get cellular for my truck. And once in, where in the settings do you get it all up and running?
I just went to Verizon and got a data only SIM card. You can bring your adapter with you to show them. Then set up is simple as plugging it in. I don’t think I really needed to do anything to set it up just ensure you have your antennas plugged in and the adapter plugged in. Maybe there was something I had to do in setting but I honestly don’t remember at this point. It was pretty simple I think.

On split screen, with Google Maps and RUclips on, will the Google Maps voice navigation over ride what's playing on RUclips? Also, do you know if it will connect to the OEM backup camera that's in the mirror? Thanks.
As long as you have the notifications settings on on google maps I would think so. I think it just depends on the setting you have google maps set at. The OEM camera for the mirror versions will not be compatible
Are you running the internet off of your hotspot on your phone, or were you able to get wifi for your car specifically. And if so, who did you go through for your service?
Can you completely turn the display off when driving at night? If it's too bright on its dimmest setting or if it's distracting, I'd like to be able to turn it off. Also how is the glare from the display during the day? Is it like looking at a mirror and you can see everything in the truck?
Good question I’ll have to check and see if you can turn the display completely off on this one. The last version had a way to do that on the Home Screen but this doesn’t. You have complete control of how bright or dark your display is set for day and night time. Mine is not on the darkest setting for night and I am happy with where it’s at. The day setting I have brightness all the way up and don’t notice any glares

Im having trouble finding the adaptor to get my back up camera from the rear view to the aucar? Any ideas or sources for that? Thanks for the responses!
Yeah man of course, shoot me an email shaun@alpinetactics.com and I’ll send over the one of the Tacoma. The other one was one I used from a wallpaper app I downloaded on the head unit but I don’t remember the exact name.
I'm halfway through the video so forgive me if you answer it, but does this unit not require any special mount/bracket and just removes the stereo and climate control panel? I had a double din screen years ago in my truck (2nd gen 2005) and then later replaced with a single din that had one of those pockets underneath the head unit built into the mounting bracket. This thing just goes right in after you remove that? I wonder if my audio connection would just be plug and play at this point or no... hmmm
So I have an install video that is kinda just an overview but you can see the basics. It’s fairly plug and play. There are just a lot of wiring harnesses to match up
Thanks for the review. I also bought the first unit and while it's been great, I have had a few issues as well. My biggest frustration has been the terrible phone mic and the very short cable that came with it. Looks like it's a similar problem with this unit as well. You did say that the quality is better but does it sound like a factory handsfree phone?
That’s a good question. I have actually never been on the receiving side of the audio for this unit or the factory unit myself. My wife says and I quote “it sounds really good” lol. On the previous one it was nearly impossible to have a conversation and she would get frustrated when we tried to talk over it.
How did you install this? I’ve been trying for 3 weeks to get it working on my 2015 Tacoma and it doesn’t work. Aucar is HORRIBLE about helping. Maybe an install video? No sound and touch screen isn’t working now either. Car audio people refuse to install saying it causes codes to trip and nothing but problems. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey there! Are you sure you have the correct wiring harnesses and the correct unit for your Tacoma model and trim? There is some variations. Did they include an instruction manual?
How did you get them to send you one for a review. I would Love to test it out especially since I would want to purchase it but it’s out of my price range and im still unsure if it’s worth it given the bugs I’ve heard about
How much did Verizon charge you for the SIM card? Is it considered part of your iPhone calling plan, and basically just an extension to your existing device (phone)??
I am curious to know this as well. T-mobile says if I want another SIM card it’s gonna be a different phone number. They said only 1 SIM card can be assigned to each phone number.
I remember last year around this time Aucar updated you on info on the new unit. Have you heard of anything about possibly a new drop this summer/fall?
Hopefully they won’t. Updating the software is really easy. I did an update right before filming this video

North is always up in mine to when using the actual application which is what I prefer. I’m not a fan of the apple car play version. I’m not sure you can lock the head unit I have never tried
Hey man, love your videos. I was wondering if your stock USB (usb/aux) port still work, and if it charges your phone. I bought a cheap $200 aftermarket radio, and the USB it comes with just doesn't produce enough power to charge my phone. Sorry for the rant.. I guess here's my questions: 1. Does the head unit connect to your stock usb port below the screen? 2. Does it produce enough power to charge your phone ? Thanks my dude !
It does come with adapter that lets you connect the head unit to that outlook. It does work and I’m sure it would charge the phone just fine but I have had some 12v DC outlets that I have always used so I’m not sure I have ever used that outlet to charge. I have used that outlet to install firmware updates to the head-unit though so I’m sure it would work fine.
@@alpinetactics thanks my man. Imma pull the trigger on it. The unit I have uses Zlink and it just isnt the best. @@MrRoblonueve it’s much better, the last generation used z link and it was horrible. These problems have been random and not continuous. Overall I’m pretty happy with it. Just need to get the one with more memory if your going to get it.
just revisiting these aucar videos.. do you have any suggestions were to mount the three gps things? there is like two long one and one square one with double sided tape?
Ok probably against the back panel behind the headunit. But my honest answer of what I did… just kinda threw them in there with the rest of the wiring lol I would suggest doing something better than that though!
Does the steering controls work well with this unit? I noted on the reverse camera there was no guide lines, is that option to turn on and off or is it just no lines?
I've read and listened to quite a few reviews on the problems these head units have. You said it finally just works right. Did you have to send it back for them to fix it, or were you able to fix it yourself?
Idk they actually sent me mine, I didn’t have to order it. There is a SIM card adapter they send you with it and it just plugs into the back with everything else. Along with the cellular antennas
I’m no audio expert but it sounds just as good as stock to me. There are all sorts of eq settings you can adjust to get the sound you want but I left all that alone

Do you recommend the 1st or 2nd gen? Will the backup camera still work after installing this? Also about how much would someone charge to install this?
The 2nd Gen for sure. Yes the backup cam still works. I’m not sure how much it would cost to get it installed. You could probably just visit your local car audio store to get a quote but it really isn’t too difficult to install on your own.

Mine is JBL too and did hook up just fine to the RCA outputs. I believe there is just an option specifically for JBL when you check out. I don’t have an aftermarket amplifier just the standard JBL set up. Honestly don’t know the first thing about amps and subs though so if you have something aftermarket I would reach out to AUCar first to verify

Yes it comes with a mic, and it does have a SIM card adapter. I actually have it connect to cellular through Verizon. Use it to download offline maps for on x off road on the go and other things.
Im having trouble finding the adaptor to get my back up camera from the rear view to the aucar? Any ideas or sources for that? Thanks for the responses!
Is there any chance you can link the photos you use here 1:00 and here 1:21 ? I'd love to use them as wallpaper. No worries if not.
Yeah man of course, shoot me an email shaun@alpinetactics.com and I’ll send over the one of the Tacoma. The other one was one I used from a wallpaper app I downloaded on the head unit but I don’t remember the exact name.
@@alpinetactics Awesome! Email sent!
Men i stuck between this head unit and the 13” head unit from top display.
I haven’t used the other one so I can’t say which is better. Good luck on your decision!
Thank you for the reply, have you upgrade your speakers yet?
@@yojuanjose1 no I have the JBL system in my Tacoma and it’s been good enough for me
I'm halfway through the video so forgive me if you answer it, but does this unit not require any special mount/bracket and just removes the stereo and climate control panel? I had a double din screen years ago in my truck (2nd gen 2005) and then later replaced with a single din that had one of those pockets underneath the head unit built into the mounting bracket. This thing just goes right in after you remove that? I wonder if my audio connection would just be plug and play at this point or no... hmmm
So I have an install video that is kinda just an overview but you can see the basics. It’s fairly plug and play. There are just a lot of wiring harnesses to match up
Do the steering wheel controls work with it? Or is there an Interface for the steering wheel controls that will work with it?
From what Ive seen from other people they do work
I wanna know what the mounts you have for your phone in the vents?
Off roam?
Yeah this one amzn.to/3XrXhld
Thanks for the review. I also bought the first unit and while it's been great, I have had a few issues as well. My biggest frustration has been the terrible phone mic and the very short cable that came with it. Looks like it's a similar problem with this unit as well. You did say that the quality is better but does it sound like a factory handsfree phone?
That’s a good question. I have actually never been on the receiving side of the audio for this unit or the factory unit myself. My wife says and I quote “it sounds really good” lol. On the previous one it was nearly impossible to have a conversation and she would get frustrated when we tried to talk over it.
You can buy a different mic with a longer cable
Since it has it own data does it have its own hotspot
How did you install this? I’ve been trying for 3 weeks to get it working on my 2015 Tacoma and it doesn’t work. Aucar is HORRIBLE about helping. Maybe an install video? No sound and touch screen isn’t working now either. Car audio people refuse to install saying it causes codes to trip and nothing but problems. Any help would be appreciated.
Hey there! Are you sure you have the correct wiring harnesses and the correct unit for your Tacoma model and trim? There is some variations. Did they include an instruction manual?
can you still use an aux cord to play music? for someone other than me if they wanted to play music?
I’m not sure I have never tried it. I don’t think so because I don’t remember there being an Aux adapter.
How did you get them to send you one for a review. I would Love to test it out especially since I would want to purchase it but it’s out of my price range and im still unsure if it’s worth it given the bugs I’ve heard about
Yes, please send review on the head unit
How much did Verizon charge you for the SIM card? Is it considered part of your iPhone calling plan, and basically just an extension to your existing device (phone)??
I am curious to know this as well. T-mobile says if I want another SIM card it’s gonna be a different phone number. They said only 1 SIM card can be assigned to each phone number.
I remember last year around this time Aucar updated you on info on the new unit. Have you heard of anything about possibly a new drop this summer/fall?
I know that they are working on one for the 3rd gen but I think they will not come out with a new one for the 2nd gen again
@@alpinetactics Nice, thanks! I know some 3rd geners that will be happy to hear that
Awesome but what happens when they stop supporting OS releases?
Hopefully they won’t. Updating the software is really easy. I did an update right before filming this video
brother it is an Android OS not apple trash IOS, android is supporting until the machine can't work properly, that's why he can split the windows in 2 apps. I'm computer engineer and i prefer Android over Apple
How do you connect the front camera wire to the dash? I have the same unit but doesn’t know which wire goes where on the unit, help would be much appreciate it
@@arjen5863 there is another standard video in cable and if you select the aux icon on the head unit it will pull up that camera but the camera also has to be attached to power
@ thanks, I’ll give it a try
@ where did you wire you’re trigger wire to?
Will Bluetooth connect to other Bluetooth devices? I’m hoping it will connect to my Uniden r4 radar detector via the app Highway Radar.
I don’t have any experience trying something like that but the core settings are kinda like an android tablet. So if you could do it on a device like that you may be able to
@@alpinetactics ok. Is it Bluetooth 5.x LE?
@@SergeiWhobichakokov I don’t know, that’s above my expertise so I would have to refer you to them for that info
does carplay work wired as well? Like through the factory usb port?
No just wireless. You can still use it to charge your phone if you use the supplied adapter though
What are the phone mounts you got on there?
These, they are the best amzn.to/486ifLn
Not sure where I went wrong but my front camera does not come on. Thoughts?😊
For OnX Off-road- I’m in 7 day demo mode and north is always up. I have the setting adjusted appropriately but maybe I have to be out of demo mode to have course up? Wanted to confirm yours works correctly? Also I don’t see a way to set a pin to lock the unit. Had mine about 3 weeks now.
North is always up in mine to when using the actual application which is what I prefer. I’m not a fan of the apple car play version. I’m not sure you can lock the head unit I have never tried
How bright is it when it’s in direct sun
It’s always been plenty bright for me. You can adjust the brightness.
Hey man, love your videos.
I was wondering if your stock USB (usb/aux) port still work, and if it charges your phone.
I bought a cheap $200 aftermarket radio, and the USB it comes with just doesn't produce enough power to charge my phone.
Sorry for the rant.. I guess here's my questions:
At times, the call lags during Apple CarPlay, so I'll say something, but whoever I am on the phone with won't hear it for another 5 seconds. It's dumb.
Thanks for your reply boss. It sounds like this new software (not zlink) seems to be faster and better
@@MrRoblonueve it’s much better, the last generation used z link and it was horrible. It’s not perfect though over the past 6 months I have had a hand full of issues with it like CarPlay will need to be reconnected or in one situation the screen went black and I needed to restart the truck to reboot it.
Ahaha, appreciate the honesty! I was thinking the same but wanted to reach out and see if I should go for better placement, of if that helps at all xD
Does the steering controls work well with this unit? I noted on the reverse camera there was no guide lines, is that option to turn on and off or is it just no lines?
I think I turned mine off. I think there is an option in the settings menu. Yes steering wheel controls work
Great Tacoma
Thank you!
I've read and listened to quite a few reviews on the problems these head units have. You said it finally just works right. Did you have to send it back for them to fix it, or were you able to fix it yourself?
As I mentioned in the video it’s different head unit entirely, a new model. They sent it to me to do a review video on it.
How long did shipping take on this one?
Also, where is the sim card slot?
Idk they actually sent me mine, I didn’t have to order it. There is a SIM card adapter they send you with it and it just plugs into the back with everything else. Along with the cellular antennas
What kinda sound quilty does it have. Compairable with jvc exc ,im looking
I’m no audio expert but it sounds just as good as stock to me. There are all sorts of eq settings you can adjust to get the sound you want but I left all that alone
Good video Alpine
Thanks!
Hi, I'm having a problem installing mine. The volume once it's halfway up. It's very distorted, and I'm trying to see how the factory help. What's up to yours?
You probably need to adjust the volume setting in the actual core settings of the unit
hello excuse me where can I get that screen that sea is how I buy it
I'm installing mine this weekend. Is there any e-brake function, or can all videos be watched while moving?
No there isn’t
@@alpinetactics appreciate you answering all these questions! I have a 2005 and installed the AxxessSWC years ago, and finally got this head unit installed tonight. Only thing that didn’t work are the SWC. I read somewhere the 3.5mm gets cut and to splice Key1 and Key2 in. Before I go cutting, do recall having to do anything like that?
No I don’t recall anything like that. My steering wheel controls worked without any modifications
Thank you for the video, but can you add wi-fi on the program
You can connect to Wi-Fi if you have it. I got a SIM card so it has its own cellular connection.
@@alpinetactics ok cool Thank you
Hi I have this unit, was wondering, is it possible for this unit to display tire-pressure / average fuel consumption/ Range information?
No unfortunately it doesn’t display any of it. The OBD info really doesn’t do much on the unit.
how is the actual audio quality for listening to music?
Just as good as OEM, I have the JBL set up so really good on my end
Do you recommend the 1st or 2nd gen?
Will the backup camera still work after installing this? Also about how much would someone charge to install this?
The 2nd Gen for sure. Yes the backup cam still works. I’m not sure how much it would cost to get it installed. You could probably just visit your local car audio store to get a quote but it really isn’t too difficult to install on your own.
@@alpinetactics Thank you for the fast response and information! My husband recently bought a 2014 Tacoma and it definitely need a better screen. Thank you!!

Quick question. Have you had issues when pressing the A/C button to turn on and off the A/C? And thank you for the video!
I think the AC button only turns it on for me
My phone is paired through Bluetooth to the unit. I made a call and the a/c turn the fan off or all the way down? Had to manually turn it back on. Has this happen to you? Got the newsiest unit

welp, the obvious question i must have missed the answer to, is how do you connect this new head unit to an AFTERMARKET amplifier? i have a '15 w/ the JBL system, and i didnt see any RCA output jacks on this unit, so i would suppose an after market tacoma head unit to RCA adaptor is needed (if it even exists)
Mine is JBL too and did hook up just fine to the RCA outputs. I believe there is just an option specifically for JBL when you check out. I don’t have an aftermarket amplifier just the standard JBL set up. Honestly don’t know the first thing about amps and subs though so if you have something aftermarket I would reach out to AUCar first to verify
i did see their website, which confirms that it has RCA outputs, 4 channel plus mono for subwoofer. they will ship all cables (2 sets) if you tell them you're not sure if it's JBL or not ;)@@alpinetactics
About how much would one of these cost installed?
I think they are going for about $800. If you check the video description there is a $50 discount code you can use. It’s a fairly easy install
When are they coming out with one for a 3rd gen Tacoma?
Idk but you could reach out and ask them, I bet the more requests they get the more likely they are to do it
@@alpinetactics I have. They said a couple months, that was months ago. 😞. Was hoping you had a direct line of communication

How many cameras are you able to add? Could you add side mirror cameras?
There are 2 aux cable inputs. One is intended to be used for the back up camera. However if you are willing to get creative I’m sure you would be able to add as many as you would like.

It was a while back and I don’t remember the name but found it in the google play store
Purchased this unit for my 2014 Tacoma. I got the 8ram 124gb version with JBL compatibility. The audio shop I took it to installed and said the sound was really bad. To make it work, they had to bypass the factory amp and rewire the speakers. Anyone else who has this unit have the same issue?
They re wired the speakers? None of that is necessary it’s all plug and play. You may need to adjust the level of the amp in the settings. Mine is a 2012 with JBL and I think I may have at one point needed to adjust the level of the amp, for some reason when I rebooted it one time it was really high but the sound should be just as good as your OEM head unit. Please update us if you figure it out.
does it support android auto?
When I put it in reverse will the image pop up
If you have a backup camera, yeah
That kind of radio fits the 2018 Toyota Tacoma.
No but they are making one for the 3rd Gen
What are the differences between gen 1 and gen 2? I have gen 1 can you still customize it like you have on gen 1 headunit?
So you can customize some things as well but it’s a different OS so the same theme this one has would not be available. This video is Gen 2 if you go back to my original video, that one was Gen 1
@@alpinetactics how helpful was the company? I'm having so many problems with this gen 1 and I feel like I'm getting nowhere with trying to get a replacement
