its an industrial and functional design which I appreciate for a cargo ship.
When you're building a cargo ship it should be designed around maximizing volume while still meeting galactic-wide docking size standards... fill the pad, and still fit in the bay . The Type 7 fails at this... its foot print is built for the medium pad, but it's just a tiny bit too tall for the bay. Making it have to inefficiently use large pads. That's Lakon "functional design" in a nutshell for you.

I like sidewinder and cobra. The only thing i don't like about cobra is a non symetrictal cockpit (because of multicrew).

The Cobra III is a great ship, nobody denies it.
It's just an ugly one...and so avoidably so. Just give it a rear fairing to make it smoother, rather than making it look like an octagonal ship that was chopped in half.

Anaconda was being designed for 30 years as a boat but at the last minute the designer was informed they were designing a SPACEship.

Wow your game crashes a LOT. In 800 hours of play my game has crashed 3 or 4 times
Brandon Mathijssen i also rarely get any crashes (live in UK ,with a far from amazing broadband area) Maybe 10 (at most)in a year.
i actually never crashed in 1300 hours of play. but if you refer to disconnects.... it happens a lot. i mean srsly a lot. in 2.3 it got kinda bad, and in 2.4 i gave up.
opening a mission board, disconnect.
opening passenger lounge, disconnect.
Going into super cruise, disconnect.
Jumping to other star system, disconnect.
Coming out of hyperspace jump, disconnect.
Dropping from super cruise approaching a station, disconnect.
Going into glide, disconnect.
Launching a SLF, disconnect.
Absolutely doing nothing... you guessed it. disconnect.
And im talking about private group and solo play.

Worst looking ship is easily the FDL. Thing looks like it was designed by Fisher Price.

I like Anaconda because it looks like what a fancy freighter would look like, and that's what Anaconda is. It's classier than the Lakon freighters, but under its skin it's still a big space truck and not a death dealing warship like the Corvette.
I didn't play Eilte back in the day so it's not just nostalgia talking but I also really like the Cobra for its iconic look. It's got a flying saucer vibe going on and has that sort of flying-wing look that early atmospheric re-entry prototype ideas had in real life. Also the Sidewinder is adorable. It reminds me of the little single seater UFOs from the old X-Com.
I do agree that Dropship is by far the ugliest piggy and the Type 10's spoiler is the dumbest thing ever.

Cobra MK III is the best looking ship in the game... so there and you're wrong...
It's easily the best looking ship!
Yeah, the Cobra Mk III is the pony car of ships... affordable, sporty, and big hood you can put all sorts of fancy paint jobs on to further style it. What it needs is a ship kit to put a turbo on it... those are even better than spoilers in space! Suck that vacuum into the FSD for increased performance!

I feel like that's bias due to it being a great ship for a long time relative to its cost.
I don't know about the bias of someone that doesn't know what a pancake looks like... the Cobra is clearly a calzone.

we know why the Cobra is shaped this way - in the original elite, the game had to use ridiculiously low amounts of memory so it could work on those computers. The ships had to be wireframe polygons without anything protruding.
That's why many of the ships are shaped like weird space polygons and I can't hate them for that.
The Cobra and sidewinders design always reminded me of the sewered head of a flatfish.
1. Type-7 Transporter. Obviously inspired by the real-life Super Guppy. Which wasn't exactly a looker, either.
2. Type-10 Defender. It could have been merely ugly, but the spoiler elevates it into a true monstrosity.
3. Anaconda. Is it good at everything you'd want it to be good at? Yes. Is it terrible to look at? Also yes.
4. Beluga Liner. Not a fan of any of the Saud Kruger yachts in space, but this thing is truly abominable.
5. Federal Dropship. A giant grey brick with some balsa wood taped to the sides.
I always found the Eagle looked like a space banana, along with Imp. Courier of course.
Personally I think the Type-6 is the worst offender here, especially because it's lacking some parts. There is some plating missing on the left and right side of the ship, and said plating is sold on the cash shop.
I don't think anyone would ever purchase customization options for that ship, but.. it's the intention that counts, and I see some really bad intentions when it comes to the Type-6.
Pretty much everything built by Lakon and Core Dynamics, I think.
And a special shoutout to the ASP Explorer, a ship as good as it can get, but so god-damn ugly I will never fly it.

Love the Anaconda, Cobra and Sidewinder.
The cobra design is from the original game when it was all you could fly. It looked good when all you had in terms of graphics was straight white lines. I wouldn't be surprised if it was put in as a nostalgia kick for all the 45 year old players
I like the Sidewinder... mainly because I played a ton of the original vector line drawn game. It’s just nostalgic!
1:Anaconda: always hated it and always will, from the lose wires to the bottom of the ship. Add to that all those point things under the José and we're done.
2:Chieftan:looks like my dog taking a shit just like Yamiks said in his review. I can't sit inside the cockpit for more than 2 minute, I know it's Lakon that made it but that's still a stupid design for a cockpit of a combat ship.
3:Challenger: same reason as Chieftan.
4:Imperial Eagle: imo opinion the first Eagle looks way better. The Imperial version looks like some kind of shitty space boat.
5:Adder: for some reason reminds me of a frog. Don't ask why.
The Sidewinder and Cobra were originally designed to look good in wireframe graphics so cut them some slack.
Yamiks not everyone was forced to use the sidewinder, the beta backers got free eagles, Free-gles
While the Cobra can look good, most of the time it doesn't and while picking one up for a cheap exploration vessel and to grind wake scans, I just don't like using it. The Diamondback Scout is a far nicer ship for the job and to be in.
FD should sell a ship kit for the T-10 that doesn't contain any parts. Instead, it removes existing ship parts.

I like the general design of the Beluga, but the tail fins are absurd and pointless atrocities. They even clip the walkways in the hangar. I will never buy that ship. Ever.

It's kinda unfortunate that other more impressive, stylish, and outlandish ship designs don't make it into this game, many of the ships just look dull and boring.. and the cockpits .. omg how badly some of them are just terrible looking, they could really use a facelift.

Re: FDS, FAS and FGS aerodynamics- seach "aircaft lifting body". Guess they made the wings thick and square to lower the polygon count. Engine power can overcome lack wing surface- search "Lockheed F-104" Funny video as usual- always enjoy your content.
The assault ship looks weird as fuck compared to the beautiful gunship.
Chieftain. I hate the way the landing gear are stored in the rear engine nacelles. It doesn't leave any room for the engines.
Shhhhhhh, you wouldn't want to reveal a Lakon engineering secret that makes their engines so compact. Blood sacrifices and the torture of Imperial slaves is not good for public relations.

classic ships = low polygon count of 80's tech. i agree they aren't pretty but they are true to the elite design aesthetic.

The only one I agree with you on mate is the FDS. That ship is a piece of shit.
Most Lakon ships would make it on my list. Definitely the Asp Scout, Type 6, Type 7, Type 9. I like the Asp Explorer's looks at least, the DB series look cool and Type 10 is better looking than the Type 9, albeit just barely. I can't in good conscience throw shade on any Gutamaya ships though. As for the Conda, well I used to think it was ugly but then it grew on me and then I bought one and suddenly I thought it was the prettiest girl at the ball.
The reason most of the original ships look the way they look is because they had a very small amount of memory on the BBC micro, so they had to limit the number of surfaces, and mirror the designs all to save precious bytes - literally every single byte counted. Not really any excuse for the new ships though.

To be fair forward swept wings reduce and relocate vortexes and is over all more drag efficient so It would make sense for a re-entery vehicle.

All Core Dynamics ships after the Vulture and before the Corvette are ugly AF. FDS, FAS, FGS...They all suck. The spoilers that this guy whines about are not any more stupid than the wing/pylon designs on most of the other ships. What do you need wings for in a vacuum? Oh yeah, I forgot, this is a fucking game. So not every fucking thing on the ship needs to have a real world use. If we were only designing for a vacuum, we'd just have a borg cube or some shit.
Asp? The ugliest ship in game is by far agreed to be the asp. And apparently the anaconda is uglier?

I think that the designers of the ships of Elite Dangerous are the worst of all space games, save only the Python Cutter Clipper,Eagle Imperial Eagle, Chieftain and maybe the Krait

FDS, FGS and FAS = same size brick with differently glued "wings" on it... lazy again.
all in all, no matter with how much optimism anyone is looking at the designs of most of the ships, everyone's getting that itch somewhere in the back of their heads, that's propelling a thought - ".. were they even trying?".
I would like to say that you are wrong about the Cobra III, but then, I am one of the few fools who bought a Cobra IV, so one might be wise to question my judgement.
Anything by Zorgon Peterson. They look like the flying cars out of The Jetsons.
Sidewinder kinda looks like one of the ships from "Critters" which I watched many times as a kid, so I didn't mind it so much. I'd put the 'Conda at #1.

The Conda? Wtf.... she’s a fine looking vessel! The underside especially when viewed from the SRV brings a sense of scale and workhorse cruiser! And the Cobra? Nish Nish .... sorry Yamiks but the LSD and cornflakes has to be eaten with care

I want to point out, most of the ships you mentioned existed in some form in the original 1985 game. This explains the odd shape of the Cobra, for example, as the original game had nothing but simple wireframes to show the different ships, and for its time, those were top of the line graphics. Being that the Cobra is version 3, they’re simply continuing the same shape from the previous generation.
I get you might understand that already, Yamiks, but maybe at least mention it next time you choose to mention ship shapes.

I think the canopy looks alright on the smaller ships. Once you get to Type 7 and bigger, it starts to look like a some sort of growth, eww. Aesthetics aside, the view is amazing and that makes me love the Lakon ships.

Python. Looks amazing. Sounds amazing. Does everything and can be modded into a hell of a combat vessel. I have large more expensive ships, but i love that Python more than (in-game) life itself!
Man idk, the Type-10 reminds me of the Antares Tank from Pirate Galaxy, wich is a ship i loved, big, slow, STEROIDS, didn't really matter how powerful it was, it was a dam good tank.
