  • Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. In part 72 of the 100E Anglia resurrection: While I fixed my charging problems by swapping the regulator I felt I needed to see if I could adjust my original regulator to give more output. Armed with the original workshop manual, I muddle through it as usual and gain a better understanding along the way.
    I Hope you enjoy this offering. Don't forget: Keep it real! Keep it cheap!
    Thanks for joining me once again in Mart's Garage.

    Hi Mart, now that you changed the belt and adjusted the tension, I would keep an eye on the water pump. As it may have an impact on the water pump bearing. But a good result on the charging system

    Most interesting and informative, should give you confidence in the charging system, when you venture on those night runs.

    The voltage between terminal D and earth (terminal E) is uncontrolled dynamo output, as the revs increase it could go as high as 18V. The output from the regulator, terminal A (ammeter = negative) and (earth = positive) is the adjustable voltage, I usually got good results setting it between 13.8 and 14.2. at fast tick over. This reading should remain constant, not increase with the revs. Remember the dynamo RPM is higher than engine speed due to the difference in pulley size. The other screw at the back sets the cut in speed. This prevents the battery draining back through the dynamo when the engine is stopped. It can be set to connect when the engine just reaches tickover. But if it ain't broke don't fix it!

    i remember back in the mid 70s i adjusted voltage regulator on my Austin A35 before heading on 100 mile trip well that night in the middle of nowhere. she died, i had over adjusted and killed the generator, she run on battery until that was drained , fun times, cheers the fan belt just needed some duct tape

    hello Mart, great video, as i am very bad with electrics, by following your instructions i could regap and adjust the volt reg on my 105E engine (which is in a Terrier Mk2), thank you

      Hi Lawrence. Glad you found the info useful. As long as you can keep the contacts clean you should do ok. I googled the Terrier Mk2 and it looks like a fun little race car. You say 105E. Did it originally have a 100E engine or is yours a later version?

    A note to all readers if a BATTERY IS OVER CHARGED OR OVER AMPED IT CAN AND WILL BLOW APART I HAVE HAD THAT HAPPEN WHEN REGULATOR FAILED AND CHARGED ON FULL CHARGE

    I suppose those regulators were originally set on the old style batteries. So they’ll be different on a newer type?? Or doesn’t make any difference 🤔

    Hello Mart, the fine adjusting of the "contact breaker coil & screw" went well, but hat about the other coil on the reg which closes when the engine is running and opens when the engine is switched off to stop the charge from the battery flowing back the wrong way?

      I just left mine alone except for cleaning. That bit either works or doesn't. Not working can be quite catastrophic.

    • @brucepickess8097
      @brucepickess8097 7 месяцев назад +3

      Hi just for your info. Maintenance-free or sealed gel batteries cannot explode as there is no liquid acid present, and the chemical makeup of the battery differs from that of the lead-acid type. No hydrogen gas is generated, so there is no risk of a spark igniting anything. If Mart has fitted a modern battery there shouldn't be a problem, however it's not good to have a high charging voltage. I believe it should be in the order of 14.4V. But because this is a dynamo with a somewhat crude regulation system I guess the charging voltage may vary quite significantly and thus also the charging current.😏
