Stag Engine Repair Pt7: Ignition and carb fixes. FINALLY Will It Run?
Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. My Neighbour's Triumph Stag has been off the road for maybe 20 years. He used to start it but one day it had a problem. I agreed to remove the head and see what is in there. Needless to say the job snowballed into a top end engine teardown and whatever it needed to get it running again. So - can I get it running again and ultimately driving? Did I mention I'd never worked on a Triumph before let alone a Stag. So as a Stag Noob everything is new to me.
This is part 7, in which I repair the ignition, fuel system and carbs and have another attempt at starting it. So maybe this time it will run. Watch along and see how we get on.

Could you sell me 2 aluminium spacers for the brake and clutch conversion?
Good catch.
Hi Mart, I am missing your regular videos. If you are struggling for projects/content I was wondering if you might consider doing a winter check over and service of one of your flatty rods? I have a similar vehicle and am always keen to learn from others.
Cheers Mark. I'm having a break. I'm working on something but I want to get it to at least a semi completed stage before editing up the footage. I'll be back!
Very good nice to know that someone is still trying to solve problems on the old flathead thanks
Cheers Charles. Thanks for watching and commenting on one of the older videos.
Absolutely gripping series Mart and I learned loads. Thanks for putting the fuel tank stuff in too. Great job.
Cheers John. Glad you found it interesting. If I can add anything re the fuel system it is this: Make sure you clean and blow through any of the old system that remains. Thanks for watching and commenting.
My first car was a ford 100E popular, I loved that car wish I never sold it, it was a very good runner, sold it 1976 was in good conditions.
Cool! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hello Mart, that was a brilliant series. I didn't think I would enjoy it but ended up being in the engine bay with you in spirit. Thanks for sharing this one. The owner must be over the moon 👍👍 I am just about to start setting my own work shop out to build it. I was wondering if I could be cheeky and ask what the approximate dimensions of your garage are. Been watching you for a long time and you seem to have made good use of your space. I have similar interests to you but have not started building my garage and thought it would be a good tried and tested size. Thanks Mart
Hi Thanks for watching. Yes, I believe Dean was pleased with what I did. Re Garage size. I'd suggest you find what is the biggest you can get on your plot. It might not be big enough but can be supplemented with carport type storage.
Well done Mart she sounds really nice…great series, I must say your patience and pragmatism in dealing with one unexpected problem after another is something to learn from. 👍
I'm laughing with you (not at you) with the minor accident ... we've all done it 🥰
Takes me back 65 years to when four of us travelled up the Great North Road between Essex and Northumberland at Christmas. It took two days to get there in the 100E, I doubt we got over 40 mph at any point on the journey. We once got up to 50 on the Southend Arterial Road, but dad never did get the fuel gauge working and regularly tested the level with a stick.
It's good it's what we need.
Good work ‘Ol Boy!…… I never had a doubt that you would succeed in the end!…….Mark
Cheers Mark. Thanks for the confidence!
Saw the Ford Granada from the Sweeney in the opening sequence
Good work Mart... yes, looking inside those carbies and you knew they were going to need a good clean and refurb!
Hello Mike. Yeah, I was shocked what I found when I pulled them apart. Thanks for watching and commenting.
You have a great engineering mind Mart
Hi Frankie. My Grandmother always said I was "mechanically minded". Thanks for watching and commenting.
Mart have not seen your show in a while I'll try to catch up on some been busy in life good to see you
Thanks Frankie.
That was a massive uphill battle! Well done!
It was indeed, Marcus. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Sounds good Mart, I saw a comment from another subscriber, “the lathe is the mechanics friend”. In this case the lathe, the mill, the adjustable die and the flexible socket drive and a life times experience is all required. Did you consider a square section O-ring for the inlet manifold leaks, not that I know how to mill an oblong grove. Just holding the manifold on the mill was an auto-jumble triumph.
Hi Pat. Yes absolutely. I'd be really stumped if I could not just jump onto the lathe and mill. Not easy things to buy due to the weight etc but well worth the effort it takes..
Wonderful job! You are to be commended for your perseverance and tenacity to do what it takes to get it running.
Cheers Phil. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
Church house classics on youtube might give you the information you need on the stag engine
Hello Bruce. I got a lot of info from watching the Church House videos they were very useful to me especially on the carbs. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Excellent work. The engine is purring and seems to be working fine. Well done! Where is the 100E hiding?
Cheers Evan. The 100E is parked on the front. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Wow just amazing been watching from the beginning when each episode comes out… well done Mark..🎉🎉😊😊 great to see another one back to life..😊😊
Hello Kevin Thanks for following along. Glad you've been enjoying them. Thanks for the comment too. It's encouraging to get comments like this.
An exercise in patience and perseverance, well done Mart.
Hi Phil. Patience and Perseverance are my middle names. Unfortunately my first name is No. Lol. Thanks, as always, for watching and commenting.
Dean knows a saint. I'd really insist you get it out of your garage ASAP.
Wonderful work and a great series. Many thanks from Australia. Cheers, Peter.
Cheers Peter. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks Mart, I have really enjoyed this series of videos, well done overcoming all the hurdles, clever machining work too. Is the secret leaving the heads loose while doing up the manifold?.
Hi John. Yes, more or less. You need to let the heads align to the manifold as they get bolted down. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I enjoyed the series! wow what a job! what a big releafe that it runs, and it sounds good! what a chalenge. That motor realy makes aaur Flatheads very easy Brendan
Hi Brendan. Yeah the flattys are simpler but still have their foibles, especially if dealing with the early type valves.
Mart, its like this car dose not want to run! it has fought you all the way! but you kicked its Butt! it sure sounds good! thanks for the vids! Brendan
Fabulous Mart. Loved following this one along. Heard lots about Stag engines over the years. Never got to work on one. Working through the issues methodically and patiently you got a great result. Engine sounded sweet. Well done mate. 👏🏻👍🏻 ( I’ll bet Dean’s pretty happy with your efforts too 😂)
Cheers Steve. Glad you enjoyed it. I think Dean is happy with how it went. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Fantastic very clever man
Shucks, Limes that's very kind of you to say that. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great job Mart. Enjoyed the series, thanks for sharing.
Cheers Blackhouse. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Mart you have the patients of a saint, anyone else would have sent the car to the scrap yard LOL Congratulations on a brilliant show of perseverance and engineering skill ........a fabulous series to watch .......proper old school common sense that is as rare as rocking horse poo these days !!!! I did a head gasket on a Dolomite once, which is just half of a V8 and that was bad enough
Cheers Jak. Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, had to dig deep on this one. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Top job Sir.. She sounds sweet. Tuning the cards is not too bad.. Just balance by listening to the intake air or use a carb syncrometer. Then set mixture by just lifting the carb listen a touch and noting what the revs do. You can then adjust the needle with a special tool. They don't cost much and very hand if you work on strombergs. Some good videos online if you want to get into setting them up. Double check the timing and that the advance is working first though. 👍
Hi Struan. Since recording I have done further work on the carbs and distributor. All a steep learning curve for me. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Have enjoyed thoroughly watching you work your way through this project, you’ve done an amazing job, thanks for taking the time to share this with us all.👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers Boxingday. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great series this has been mart you have persevered where many people would of given up your approach to problems are great and you have also learnt a bit on the way You’ll have all the stag owners calling you now😂😂
Ha ha yeah, good job I'm ex directory (is that still a thing? Lol)
I bet Dean had a smile on his face when he saw that video Mart👌you got the engine sounding sweet. That was a massive task to take on 🤓 Great watch thank you young sir. Bernard.👌
Cheers Bernard. Yes, he was highly chuffed. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Sounds super smooth if you ask me…..😊
Hi Simon. That's the beauty of a V8. Nice and smooth. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I watched you put a lot of time and effort to get this on the road. Wonder if the engine heat from the first drive heated the flywheel and broke the clutch loose. Makes a nice looking little car so what next for it?
Hi Galen. That might have been a factor. The only thing I did differently was try and crank it in top gear. I think the higher load and shaking when it tried to fire helped shake it free. But the heat probably was a contributing factor.
Well done so far, when you were cranking the engine over in part 6 I don’t think you had 8 compressions !! KBO. Roger in Norfolk
You might be right. I noticed a bit of a gallop to it but don't forget the bores aren't perfect. I think it has improved with running. I'm sure it wasn't a valve problem, so just uneven compressions rather than one cylinder with none. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Mart, Mart, Mart...I really did enjoy this one, albeit from a schadenfreude perspective. I've always known these to be a nightmare, particularly the engines. When you said it was timed from #2 sums it up. As I was watching each installment I frequently found myself saying "you've got to be kidding." Whatever drugs the designer was on were not good. Kudos for your perseverance and a successful outcome.
Cheers Tony. Yes it was a bit of a challenge. Good to come out of the other side though.
Hi Mart , I didn't think I would enjoy this series , but only because it's not my era of car . However I was completely wrong , and enjoyed and looked forward to each episode . Thanks You from Canada!
Cheers J. (Jim?) I know what you mean, but it's old enough to be interesting and we all love a resurrection and will it run. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Congratulations on getting all those issues addressed & having it resurrected & running so well .Guess there's more videos fettling & tuning to come.Glad to see this update .I commend you on being able to video everything whilst Working.I couldn't entertain that wish I could .Best wishes .
Hi David. Yeah, videoing does add an extra level of complexity. Might be some more videos, but no promises. The editing is very time consuming. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Having the same issues after fitting a new water pump cover. I ended up ordering standard gaskets from James Paddock, as the thicker size manifold gasket prevented tge inlet sitting correctly to do the bolts up. If that doesn't work and I have to take it apart again I'll get 10 thou machined off. Awesome video I've enjoyed your progress with the stag. Cheers DSG Australia
Hi Dusty. I can't see how thicker manifold gaskets would be useful, normally thinner would be necessary, as material has to come off to compensate for skimmed heads. Glad you've enjoyed the videos. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Case closed... now remind me not to buy one of those. I must give credit to those people who run and persevere with them.
Hi Kevin. The owners are an enthusiastic and knowledgeable bunch. I received a lot of help from the owner's club forum. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Mark Excellent job, your patience, perseverance, and skill has paid off handsomely. The engine sounds and runs beautifully. Now the engine has been through a couple of heat cycles, there's no harm in retorqueing the heads now. After a few miles on the road with it under load really generating some heat, I would then retourque at around 500m. Keep checking for the first 2000m or so until everything has really bedded down. I've built several Stag engines and have always used this schedule, and i have never had any problems. Don't forget to use a good antifreeze formulated for aluminium engines. I think Bluecol is the recommend brand. A well sorted Stag is a joy to drive. Well done and good luck.
Hi Finto. The heads have had a couple of retorques. It will get another go around after some more miles have been put on. Thanks for the advice.
Fingers crossed for the road test. Steve.
Cheers Stevie. There has been lots of finger crossing all round on this one. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Well you got there in the end and a good time had by all 😁 Ive been shouting at the videos for a while about basic stuff like new tank on a car that’s been stood a while always blowing from tank to bulkhead with filters removed then fresh fuel in tank then pumping through to glass jars to check the fit new filters those are on a couple of pounds each , looking at the state of the carbs when you first pick them up especially in the state they were in they should have been stripped and cleaned to save time in the long run by putting and taking them of repeatedly 😮 but hey you got there in the end and all right for someone like me that’s worked on this stuff since the 60’s , but I would say the delivery rate of the pump is too slow as he’ll find out on the road test you can measure it as it’s in the books on measuring it, but all in all it’s now a runner from a no start so good job done and I’ve liked your work ❤ ps nice machine work 😀👍
Hi Paul. Lots of lessons learnt re assuming things are ok. Better to assume nothing is ok. I think the pump delivery might be low too. Dean has another fuel pump. We might give that one a try. Thanks for watching and commenting.
This series of videos was really interesting! You did outstanding work on this machine. Very well done sir!
Cheers Rak. Thanks for watching and commenting.
💯👍 top notch Mart.
