A user review of the 1988 Honda NX125 from my perspective. I bought the motorcycle for my girlfriend to learn on, and its great for that, however its not up to the task of maneuvering in traffic without pre-thinking your moves, and I don't think this is something a beginner should have to worry about. Pick a 125 to learn on if you don't have to ride in congestion. Otherwise, its a solid freaking bike.
Oh yeah, I rounded down the displacement in the intro. Deal with it.

I had one of these brand new in my teenage years. It wasn't fast but it wasn't slow. I could hit 60-65 and keep it pinned all day long. I was about 150lbs at the time. 55mph was no problem with my teenage girlfriends riding with me. I would regularly trail ride with some jumps. Suspension was its weak point. Too soft compared to a true dirt bike. Stock tires were pretty good but you could not compare them to a true knobby. Fuel economy was great. Reliability was great. It was quiet. Lights were great for nice night cruises. It was a fun bike and surprisingly capable offroad.
I still have my 88 125nx. Such a great bike. Parts are simple bike parts, easy to find. I've beat the heck out of that bike, train track trails, farming trails simple exploring. Bought it for 550$ like 15 years ago. I can't kill it, it just wants more. Why sell it and loose a cheap fun bike for what, 500$? I hold on to it. When gas was over 4$ a gallon, i loved it!
Had my motorcycle license when I was 15. My furst bike was a NX125. It was a cruiser. Brings back memories.
Also this bike seems perfect for inner big city riding. Where you never go above 55.
I rode my '88 nx125 the first year and a half before I upgraded to a nighthawk 750 . It limited me to only riding in city, so it kind of sucked, but i think if you can learn to survive in the city on a 125 it'll make you a lot safer of a rider on the open road.
I picked up a 89 that's been sorta butchered. Going to try and get it running this week. I work like 3 miles from the house, so it would be a good option for it. Plus, I work in a gravel pit, which would be easier on this over my street triple
oh cool. i loved this little motorcycle when i had it
Great cinematography! That first shot was excellent!
Thanks
They are good light weight great mpg . I bought one for $800 with 4k miles. It can easily be put on a rv, or even a corolla . I use it as a cheap bike and cheap back up transportation to town that 20 minutes away from my cabin.
thank you for posting this, picked up two 125s and this is the most info ive found on them so far.
awesome, glad you found it helpful.
I just bought a1988 NX125 then rode it home 60 miles.
It's going to serve me as Dr Jeckyl.
My Plated Kawasaki KDX200 is Mr Hyde.
I agree 125%, if you try to ride in traffic you need the skills of a Veteran rider.
My 1985 Honda Elite 150 is the same, just fast enough(60mph) to get into real trouble.
yeah man, it's the ultimate defensive ride. 125%, BAHAHA
I just traded my kdx220 for a nx250, not regretting it
wow i saw a XR650 in your instagram, great bike! Currently i own a Yamaha XT600E, love the torque of these big singles.
ferhn yeah the 650l is a ton of fun
Man, also is a lovely piece of history! I want one.
That's a nice bike........ take it for what it is and you'll enjoy it. Not only that, it's a rare bike.
Im 200lbs, 6' 5 and ride this bike up in the mountains at about 8k ft elevation. Its slow but it works, and mine is in way worse shape than this. Its the most reliable fking thing. I ride hill climbs and mud and deep snow and technical rocky trails. What an easy bike to ride! I also own the Honda Xr650r.........verrryyyy different bike lol
Good review and nice video coverage! Thanks
glad you appreciate it!
Perhaps if you're someone who has never ridden anything with two wheels and an engine in your entire life, this could be a good beginner bike. However, the xr250 or other 250 dual sports would be a much better decision in my opinion as they can actually keep up on most roads. Someone could probably learn on pretty much any dual sport though, I've never really heard of a dual sport that will throw you off the back while doing a power wheelie at 1/4 throttle. Lol. I guess it's all down to opinion in the end. I would personally never take a 125 on the street, but some people swear by starting on a 125.
This bike was made in Brazil and exported to USA, but in brazilian market Honda sold the NX150, wich is pretty much better bike. Later Honda released the NX200, and the lack of horsepower of these little NX was resolved.
ferhn oh thats interesting. im sure in a more crowded city such low horsepower wouldn't be an issue anyway
In 1983 i owned a 125cc Honda Turuna, the brazilian version of vintage CB125S. Same NX125 engine but developing 14 HP, on this bike i did 75 mph top speed, maybe due to lower weight or the higher gearing as well. When i tried the XL125S, wich is pretty much the same bike as the NX125, i felt like driving a bike with someone on the pillion or with the exhaust obstructed. Ok this is not a sport bike, but really seems to have some hps hidden in the little engine waiting to release them, maybe with a K&N filter or even a less restrictive muffler. So the NX series supposed to be a fun bike right?
You've got the weight listed as 264kg but it's actually 264lbs. 264kg is what a KTM 1290 Adventure R weighs :-)
lol well thats not good. I should have noticed that. Oh well. your the first to say something, thanks
I have the same bike and the fastest I have gotten it to is 55mph on a slight downhill.
I think there was a 500 too, Austria and Japan I believe, same or similar power output as 650, just cheaper on insurance.
It's a 125! What do expect power wise?
It just doesnt have a place on US roads
@@FridaysTheBomb It wasnt made for that obviously.......... promote its merits not its flaws
I think it's lost a few ponies over the years, maybe it's been sitting too long. But the 12HP Honda Rebel 234cc can hit 70, and the 8HP Honda Grom msx125 can hit 60. Or maybe it's just too big with a bit too much wind resistance.
The information I found on it states 13 hp.
I don't understand. My stock 2011 CBR 125R easily does 84 mph on straightaways, 100 mph going downhill... It has 13hp. Apparently, I've read that this bike does 55 mph at best?? But it has 13 hp as well!? Can you confirm that the NX 125 is really that slow, because I was about to buy one before finding out it was apparently slower than anything I've ever rode.
I have experience with the KE 125 (also 13 hp), which is way quicker to accelerate but has a top speed of about 75mph on straightaways because of the lower gearing, I thought this bike was gonna be similar, but from the looks of it, it doesn't seem so...
i think the fastest I ever got this to go was close to 60. i don't know why a cbr125 would do over 80... but i assure you i never saw this bike do that lol
Friday'sThe Bomb Yeah, people usually think 125s are slow... But the 2011 CBR 125R isn't. On the Freeway, I can keep it at 94 mph going downhill and 84 mph going uphill. I know two people who have the same bike and they can do it as well, but we're shifting it at redline lol.
Friday'sThe Bomb In this video, I've seen that you shift WAY too early, like, if you do that all the time, that explains why you can't get anywhere past 60 mph. Have you tried to push the bike at its limits before each shifts?
yes I've tried running the gears out. in fact i was doing that in the opening clip.
Back in the day i had a honda mbx 125 someone had tuned it up it could do +70 mph two up,no shitting
The bikes is slow even for a 125 where most 125 have 15hp now the only reason they are good is that they are reliable, cheap and can be driven on an a1 license I don’t really see a reason for it to be in the us
I'm a beginner rider and as of right now I own an xr80 but I have the option of buying this bike in mint condition fully serviced and ready to ride but I don't know if I should buy it. Tell me what do you think.
Its a fun little bike, but its dangerous to ride it in traffic that moves faster than 35mph. People have this idea that they need weak engines to learn how to ride, but this thing is more likely to get you killed than a 600 supersport. It is very dangerous to have less moving power than the vehicles around you. My recomendation is to buy a motorcycle that produces 25 to 50 horsepower. Unless your talking about dirt riding. If thats the case, you should buy it.
I had the NX 650 1988 model a heavy bike.
I'm a 5'1 tall 23 year old girl, and interested in purchasing this 88 Honda NX125.
Do you think i'd be too short?
Beverly Pace i think you'd be fine. it has a very short seat height.
33.5" seat height actually, so if you measure your inseam that should give you an idea of whether you could flat foot it or not.
Beverly Pace
I measured my inseam and it is 25 inches. I fear that I am too short to ride motorcycle?
Beverly Pace well the suspension sags some when you sit on it too. try to go see an nx125 in person so you can sit on it and see for yourself. having your feet go flat on the ground isn't necessary.
What if you re geared it for the highway? Or tune it some? Would love one for commuting and riding up the 6 stairs in my front yard since I have no driveway and a fenced it front yard lol.
Larry Miller re gearing it might help but youd lose top speed. it would be perfect for riding around in a city.
What if it was geared the other way around? Like more for top speed ? Is that doable? Thanks! Great video by the way.
Larry Miller if you did that, it would struggle to accelerate at its current top speed, and wouldn't be able to reach its "new" top speed. gearing it lower is the only way to gain performance in my opinion. it doesn't have enough power to reach the top speed its currently geared for, so if you made the gearing taller it would probably make things worse.
if i lived in a city where my average top speed didn't exceed 35 mph, i'd for sure gear it down.
Jaycbee024 this things performance was disappointing from all angles, but it was a mint old motorcycle. I never took it on any trails, but the suspension alone might make it worth it for you.
i want one
for the street,No!!!,for trails heck yeah
+supercrew63 i have to agree with you here. On a small tight trail this bike might be a lot of fun.
Whats the seat height on these?
+CW 33.5" according the internet
gearing
i have an 81 xl125. slower i bet
In the right circumstances it's fun as hell though.
nibe bike
fun ride!
You have to dodge cars on any bike you ride these days.
You do it a lot more on something this size
