My apologies if someone else has already said this, but there is a quicker way to get Energy cards in this game. Put all of your Energy cards into a deck and then talk to a certain NPC in Mason's lab and you will get 10 each of the basic Energy cards. I don't recall which NPC, unfortunately. The best way to do this is put all of your unused energy cards in a deck and then finish filling it with random Pokemon to reach 60 cards. Then, talk to the NPC, get the extra Energy cards, rinse and repeat as desired. Your deck only needs 1 basic Pokemon to be valid, so 1 Pokemon and 59 Energy cards works. You can also do this to replenish your Energy cards after giving them all away to the NPC who "gives" you a promotional Slowpoke card in one of the clubs. Hope this helps in future challenges as well as for others who play the game!
These really bring joy to me, to be honest. Both because of the fond memories I have of the game and because of how put effort you put on these-Those 30ish minutes don't feel like that much time at all. It is some entertaining stuff.
"Deep down, aren't we all just fat sand rats?" - The Spiffing Brit 20xx This series is an absolute blast. I really wanna try the GBC TCG now, it looks much more fun than any of the online stuff, what with the GBC's amazing story mode -well, not the story itself, I meant the gameplay, the story is pretty bland, but come on, it's a card game, there's not much to work with - and the simple fact that... well, there's a lot of nostalgia in it for some people.
Can I say how much I love your pokemon TCG challenges? They're very unique :) Also, props to you by using your favorite pokemon in this challenge! Elite Four Karen would be proud haha
So im Defbam aka Panhandle and honestly I didn't think this challenge would be as crazy as it turned out to be. Pretty cool how the two masters you were worried about you beat in one try.
A fun challenge could be to use the three Gen 1 birds, Pidgey, Spearow and Doduo and their Evos. The other one would be to only use Route 1 Pokemon in a deck.
3:15-"Grandmaster Steve should be easy" Not with his zapdos' fighting resist-especially the ones that have attacks that ignore resistance 8:20-Jennifer's deck. Oh god, I have really bad memories of that pest's deck. It's so infuriating Wow, that was incredibly lucky against Nikki and Rick Good job with the run
I just wanted to take a moment to say that I have really been enjoying your pokemon TCG videos. They are very entertaining, the type of videos I can easily watch/listen to a few times. Keep it up!
We have so much in common! Ground is also my favour type and i love how shrew and slash evolve making them together my favourite ground type from gen 1
In case no one has mentioned it, theres a more convenient way to see other parts of the play area instead of the clumsy menu. If hold B and press up or down, it goes to the corresponding players bench. Holding B and pressing left or right goes to the discard piles. Pressing select shows the overall view, which can be useful to check the amount of cards left in the decks
Had such a blast watching this bud, have to admit, I applauded at the pun and the grandmasters and loved the references, dry sarcastic humor. Keep it up.
I absolutely love your Pokémon content. It’s fantastic and I really like your style. Also the tcg game content is rare and yours is great so you have easily earned my subscriber and I hope you get many more
I know I'm hella late, but Sandshrew~ Loved it so much back in gen 1 that I tried to name myself Sandshrew on a reply... Shame there was a 6 character limit. Also, as an aside, coin flips are locked in a set order for an entire match. The only way to change one is to reload a quick save and use something else that causes a coin flip to move you to the next flip in the chain. Someone else probably explained, and probably more succinctly. Sorry.
Your last videos inspired me to do this run with my favorite old school card: Rattata and Raticate. Surprisingly doable thanks to Super Fang always allowing you to 3 shot opponents. TCG challenges have turned out to be tons of fun. Thought about doing it with a deck based on Blue’s team next. I actually think a challenge of having to carry too many Pokémon would be harder by making the deck clunky.
@@Paraspectre also I’m not 100% if you knew, but if you put all of your energy cards into decks the guy in the upper right of the lab will give you 10 of each basic energy. The game thinks you don’t have any with them all in decks and you can repeat this a couple times to build a free energy pool at the start of the game.
DAMN YOU AND YOUR WELL MADE CONTENT!!! You got me interested in TCG again and now I am 150€ deep in my quest to acquire a collection of vintage cards to play my buddy!
One deck I've always wanted to mess around with in the game, although it requires trades or hacks to build, is just 4 Legendary Zapdos that deals all its damage via its Pokemon Power. Between 3 the 3 zapdos that you didn't start, 4 Scoop Ups, 4 Item Finder, and maybe even trying out Recycle, it can drop 200 damage around the board, which back then was often enough to win early. Chanceys might be a bit of a pain in the ass, though.
I've been enjoying your TCG vids a lot! You made me interested in the old TCG games and I'm having a whole lot of fun playing them for the first time. Thank you for that! :D How about a Jigglypuff evolution line challenge? They seem to be bulky, but the damage output is less than optimal. Also, there are 3 kinds of Jigglypuff cards in the game, I think.
Sandshrew has always been one of my friends and I's favorites due to a running gag of ours in primary school, so I just want to say you have great tastes in Pokémon.
Would love to see you do a challenge run where you play the first game 3 times, each using one of the eeveelutions and seeing which one can beat the game the quickest/easiest. Also a playthrough of the second game using all three eeveelutions in a single deck would also be awesome! Also, we NEED! to see you do a playthrough of the terrible Pokemon Play It! Trading card game cd-rom for pc that came out back in the late 90s/2000. Great video man, keep em coming!
Nice content, I liked it! I've got a challenge for you; Try to beat the game without the use of any trainer cards and without the use of basic pokemon that can't evolve (hitmonchan, elektabuzz, scyther, chansey, etc). No scumming, RNG-manipulation or the use of glitches or cheats allowed obviously. I did it once and it is a tough one. Took my about 6 hours In-game play time.
My favourite pokemon is also Sandshrew. Followed closely by Rattata, Meowth and Minccino. Yeah... I have a soft spot for cute simple "realistic" ones...
Hey, I hope this is helpful (and you might have already thought of it, but)... You could make a save state right after the tutorial, right before you choose your starter deck, and use that as your starting point for all future challenges. Just make sure you don't save over that slot, and it'll save you an hour every time!
Sandslash has been my favorite pokemon since I was gifted Red as a young lad and realized I couldn't have one. It's remained my favorite through sweet nostalgia
"timing the coin flips" is an urban legend like how some people think holding certain buttons while throwing a pokeball changed the odds of catching in the main game. The Gameboy uses a predetermined string of numbers that are always the same to determine random events. Every time a random event happens, you will get the same coin flips in the same order if you use save states. What you can do to abuse this is use trainers that shuffle the deck after resetting a save state to get to a different part in the string of numbers.
I tried this with exeggcute and exeggutor but it turns out 2x exeggcute and 4x exeggutor +double colorless and trainers is an extremely good deck in this game.
Ryan’s Deck is not too bad. The only issue is that you have to rely on Lord Helix and Cloyster for Fighting resist Opponents. Hitmonchan is basically the hard carry of the deck.
It is so funny that a ground rock type would not be able to fight well against a flying poison type. Because of how the types are classified in the tcg.
Ok i am not sure of you know this, but doing the tutorial battle without the instructions again (and again and again...) gives you booster packs with only energy cards. Repeat a few times and you have 20+ for every energy.
There is actually an easier trick used by speed runners. There is a guy in the starting lab who will give you energies if you don't have very many in your bag. So just add 3 or so energies to your starter deck and then talk to him and he'll give you 10 of each energy. You can then make a second deck with all energies and 1 pokemon and talk to him again to get even more.
Can you beat either of the Pokemon TCG games with only Magikarp and Gyarados? I mean the answer is probably yes but I still think it'd be fun to watch and play, and it's not frustratingly luck-based!
Sandshrew is pretty decent in these games, iirc, not a bad Basic Pokemon to have in your deck if you have fighting energies (until you optimize your deck at least). Sand Attack can win games with some luck, and being Super Effective against two types is nice. Fighting resistance gonna be a bitch though, and Sandslash could be pulling its weight a little better, a little too dependent on luck for my taste. Obviously being your ONLY Pokémon is a special kind of problem, but still.
Love these videos! I was a huge fan of the GBC TCG when I was a kid. Challenge idea - you're not allowed to make fun of Matthew (or Ryan aka Matt2) throughout the entire video. I kid. Actual idea - base a challenge around decking? Either you're never allowed to win by decking or you can only win by decking (the latter sounds a lot more tedious). Might also be interesting to make "Ronald must always be defeated by decking" a rule moving forward with these challenges.
My apologies if someone else has already said this, but there is a quicker way to get Energy cards in this game. He's in Mason's lab, on the right by the door to the side room.
Also at the beginning of the game you only need to add a couple of energies to your starter deck for him to give you energies.
@@andrewallan8132 how many?
He said in one of his videos (I think it’s the Matthew one) that he doesn’t like using that guy because it’s too tedious.

Shrewfall? Casino Shrew? Quantum of the Shrew? The Spy who Shrew'd me? From Shrew with Love? Or are movie titles out of the question?
I once lost 13 meaningful coinflips in a row playing this game. Relying on coin flips really does suck.

Bulbapedia has the info about booster packs, if I remember correctly. Check the article about the game.
Bulbapedia, they also break down what trainers have them IIRC
Sandshrew is also my favorite pokemon!
It's so nice that you get to use your favorite
Do you think the game writers knew that they were making a joke when they named one of the grand masters Thunder Steve?
Hell yeah sandshrew gang. I thought I was the only one
You should do a Fossil only deck; only use pokemon that can evolve from mysterious fossil and their evolutions.
Sandshrew? Blastoise? Parasect?
You sire have great taste in Pokemon :D

Shrew Only Live Twice.

Hmm, this is inspiring me. Maybe I could do... a Pikachu run. Pikachu, Flying Pikachu and Surfing Pikachu
You get the flying and surfing ones from Ishihara in a trade. Not sure what you trade for them though.
