Those thorny green shrubs(Karuvela Maram on Tamil) which you see in Pudukkottai Sivaganga are not native to TN. In Early 70s, TN government air seeded them in this part of TN to cater to the needs of Kitchen wood which these shrubs provide.
These trees grow rapidly, can survive unless it's root is removed and their wood yield will be mutlifolds within few years and this is the main reason to choose this. But it turned out to be a bad decision, because this plant belongs to class of plants which consume more ground water and spread so rapidly. Over a period of several years, it had spread all over this region and the consecutive governments didn't do much as they didn't understand the devil's of it. And locals had no complaints as it helped with their wood.
Only in last two years, TN government is proactive in removing this from many parts of STN. Kaanadukaathan is the place where it's more in number.
