Crystal would have been the best Johto game if - Make the evolution stones purchasable from the goldenrod dept store and not wait for some NPC to randomly give it to you. Or at least put them in the overworld. - Putting Johto Pokémon like Slugma and Houndour in the Johto region, and not locking them to the Kanto postgame. - Making Mareep available, as not including it is like Platinum not having Shinx. Doesn’t help you have to wait for ages until you can get another electric type (magnemite) - Making the gym leaders use more Johto pokemon on their team. Faulkner, Bugsy, Morty and Chuck don’t use any of the new Pokémon. Chuck could use Hitmontop and Morty Misdreavus. - Buffing the Kanto leaders and trainers teams to higher levels. They’re after the champion, make them in the 50’s at least. - Adding missing Kanto features like cerulean cave, viridian forest, seafoam islands etc Shame none of these were fixed.
I can see why cerulean cave, viridian forest and sea foam islands were removed. This is from my understanding of three years after red, blue and yellow because the legendary birds are not obtainable nor Mewtwo. Hence supposedly this game came out by force because there was a space demo of gold of what the game could've looked like but many features were changed and some pokemon had to be repolished and etc. Edited: I do agree about the Kanto gym leaders being more challenging than easy plus it should've been more than 100 new Pokemon because the steel and dark type were barely new and not many to choose from. It hurts to hear my favorite games get criticized so much lately but I think you made good points and laid your arguments out well. Where I think you dropped the ball a bit was not touching on what GF was going for with these games both thematically and with regards to gameplay such as how the size and interconnectivity of the Johto region was immersive and countless events on different days and different times of the day encouraged people to keep coming back instead of rushing through and never picking it up again. The quantity of content in GSC may have aged poorly but for its time, it fit a nice niche that many future installments did not. Also, although this is mostly in reference to Japan, Crystal did have a purpose to exist and it was for interconnectivity with the release of Pokémon Stadium 2. If you're not aware of how the two games could interact, you should look it up. It's pretty mindblowing for the time and we haven't gotten anything like it since. Some of the changes made in Crystal such as the animated sprites and addition of the battle tower were and still are huge draws to the game for me that I believe are slept on by many fans but I acknowledge that I'm also blinded by nostalgia. It might not be the best third version in the franchise, but it still fulfils the function of one, especially since this was still early in the franchise when the standards for a third version had barely even been established. Whereas BD\SP were shameless nostalgia pandering cash grabs that tried to cover a lack of innovation with a veil of "faithfulness" to a pair of 15-year-old games while ignoring all the improvements from Platinum. They fail to live up to the standards of previous remakes in the franchise.

I think the way you are looking at the gen 1 and 2 games is pretty flawed. They weren't really designed to speedrun through them and replay them again with a different team speed run it again, etc. They were clearly designed to have a single save file that you spend hundreds of hours on. "Gotta catch them all" was still the catchphrase back then. The gen 2 games are full of time of day events and weekly events designed to have players come back on different days to previous areas to get items or certain pokemon. The level curve is actually pretty good for people trying to fill a pokedex. Lower rocket grunt levels, for example, let you actually use lower level pokemon as you are evolving them to fill the pokedex. GSC are actually really good when looking at them as an RPG with exploration and fulfilling the main quest given to you at the beginning of the game, completing the pokedex. There are fair criticism like gym leaders in Johto only using kanto pokemon and some low to mid tier Johto pokemon being locked behind the E4. Trying to judge them as if it were a game to breeze through and replay it like it was a rougelike or something I don't understand.
I think you downplay some improvements that Crystal made that were a big deal at the time. The battle sprite animations, for example, were pretty cool as a kid playing the game in 2001. That alone made Crystal worth playing over Gold and Silver. Crystal also had a lot of promo material out at the time advertising the Ruins of Alph that made you want to explore it. Video games, particularly handheld games, were more like toys than they are today, so some things from back then just aren't going to translate when playing 90s and 2000s handheld games today. The small improvements that Crystal made definitely justified its existence in 2001.
When you're the first game to implement series staples such as a girl playable character, the Battle Tower or battle animations, you do have a reason to exist. It can still be considered a moneygrab but it does have its purpose
Kind of stupid because by modern day standards leaf green and fire red don't hold up but you've quoted them as some of the best games ever. If you can't see your own bias or the accomplishments of the time that brought about some of your favourite games don't trash a game with the little understanding you have.
you need to beat all story content (maingame + postgame) to evolve any non-regional dex pokemon or trade with other games of the same generation, yet they constantly tease you level after level with "Huh? Golbat is Evolving!" imo that kinda ruins the game for me
Jpn had all the good stuff like crystal was cracked they had online connections with cell phones ect battle tower was better idn if we had it like that I would been crazy but we were technically not there yet in the US
I think Pokemon Crystal is the only game i played that is a so damn impressive game both in innovation and technical wise that it manages to be terrible.
gotta think Japan is small compared to the US so its easier to set that up, It like saying in korea they only have 9 ping on league of legends, well ya it only takes roughly 4-6 hours to drive from one spot to another in korea with a average speed of 100 k/mh so the server are close and fast, tho we are getting close to having fiber internet everywhere so oneday we will catch up.

In hindsight Gen 2 really needed an overhaul and HG/SS should've made it easier to get access to more Pokemon during Johto as well as the level issues
