I was so upset today… I am brand new to the hobby, my mom kept fish my entire life but she recently passed. My first fish died… one of my second fish died, I saved the others by a immediate water change, prime, and beneficial bacteria. I was testing and treating my tank for a week. 24 hours after adding fish, I had a huge nitrite spike. Thank you for this video series.

I just got back from deployment about a year ago, my transition has been rough as I was immediately thrown into a medboard. I'm finally home with my kids and trying to find a balance in my life, so I bought a 55 gallon and 16 male peacocks cause I have always wanted to keep cichlids. You're videos and your book on cichlids have been amazing. I'm finding some peace in my life and my cichlids help me find some sort of balance as I approach the end of my military career. I just wanted to thank you for your service Kev. And for all the helpful advice. Let's go!

Hey Kev, this was one great video. Tip #3 was the most useful to me. I just bought a Top Fin 2 gal tank for my 9 y/o grandson. And yes, he wanted to fill it with fish 30 seconds after I showed it to him. I had a few 10 and 2 20 gal tanks many years ago in my early 20's, Am in early 70's now. I can't believe how complex (and expensive) the hobby has become. So no MTS plans for me, yea, I know, famous last words... Anyway, thanks for an entertaining and useful video. BTW, that tank behind you was incredible. Will def be back.

Had them in the 70's, now by helping a dear friend to her work, I am now also counting cichlids with her at a fish farm in Tampa Bay and love it dearly!! Did a fast study on the Cormorant, that was perched on the telephone pole... It can wipe out a pond in one feast! Picked up a 30 gal - (not the 300 gal the previous owner also left behind, geez it was as big as my car! ha!)---The house flipper put the 30 out at the curb... Well, I'm doing it all wrong just as you noted, think they are stressed...-- Was give a few Yellow Labs and a Maingano that were culled due to their way off color, (They would of been the cats treat, so home they came-- I'm already so fond of them. Gonna run out and get the Stress Coat! The PH is off a bit... I'll crash course your videos and take notes!! It's cool to see what is in the sein net on counting day- like the 18 inch Pleco found this past Sunday - how'd he get there! (bird drop) Gotta get those ponds covered asap - cold snap a commin' - Guess which line is the longest, I hear at the airport around 2AM to get them off and on to there new home! Largest AG economy in FL, who'd of known... I'll be learning a lot from you I'm sure. I enjoy your enthusiasm ! Happy Trails

I started about 8 months ago. Got a 20 gallon tank and the investment ended up being over $300 for the one tank. I have a 75 gallon tank I am currently setting up and of course it costs more just for all the accessories needed to make to work. Aquariums CAN be for the cheap.. but you're going to end up buying 1 or 2 accessories per paycheck. Is a long slow process on a dishman's salary. But I did learn a lot about cycling, thank you!

MTS about killed me. How real. I started with 39 gallon and guppies, my daughter took that over and now I have a 36 breeding, 45 grow out and a 75 community with discus as the center. Caught a real case of MTS here but the cure is that this hobby takes time.

Bro, I wanted to give you major props and thanks. 20 years ago I was a novice. Got my first 55 gallon tall and stocked that bad boy with cichlids. Africans & South Americans together in somewhat harmony lol.
Anyway, it had been YEARS since I had a tank. More than 15. But I jumped in when I got an 80 gallon gifted to me. All the decorations and some other stuff came with it but I purchased a Fluval 407 canister and it was the first time I had used a canister filter. 20 years ago, it was over the top filters only for me, so a lot of great knowledge you’re sharing in your videos.
I love the crystal clear water tips, but I wanna tell you, I now have 2 407’s and my sponge filter airstone and my water is so clear. Those 407’s are very quiet so those, plus my Whisper AP 150, plus my wavemaker… my tank is so quiet, so clear, and my fish are so happy.
Thanks again. Been a pleasure watching your videos. Very informative plus you got cool vibes so your videos don’t come off as boring and lame as compared to others on here.
    Props man. Keep ‘em coming!

You're amazing Kev. Thank you! YourCycle education was most helpful tip 🙃... I hope I don't lose my Mystery Snail. I've been trying to fix my new tank error😭... He seems Hardy but he won't come back into the water. All the levels are good but I can't get Ammonia to less than 1ppm. History of 10gal tank maintenance:
At this point I've done two complete water changes. For fear of losing newly grown good bacteria I didn't wash the gravel, decor or filter (HOB, Sponge, and aerator stone) I just completely changed the water trying to remove all the food chemicals that broke down.
    What I think happened:
I had left two alfalfa wafers for 2 days in the newly set up 10 Gal tank trying to give them food specifically for them and help the calcium I dropped in a mineral calcium ball together at the beginning. I didn't realize I spiked the ammonia. The wafers had slime cloud around them and had started to deteriorate. I thought that was normal🤦‍♀️.
SOooo I Lost the female mystery snail -after two days, just removed the deteriorated wafers. Didn't realize what was happening at all. Started researching immediately after that...I tell you ignorance is bliss🥹... It's been 12 days since of me trying to fix so I even moved Gary ( my golden mystery snail) to my acrylic non filtered 1 gal with 0 ammonia And Ph 7.6+ to work on the 10 gal as it cycles!?😑🤷🏾‍♀️ He stayed overnight until I came back from work and fixed on the 10gal the next day. Main Problem: Everything was new at the same time. So after I lost Louise, Gary started to get swollen. He was stuck hanging on the silk plant in a vertical direction. Weird. Part of him was out the shell. So I moved him into the 1 gal. He did recover over that day to his normal size and was then able to go back into his shell and close his door. Now he's back in the 10gal. But he won't go in the water. He sticks to the glass with his butt only in the water. He's not eating and not walking around, just inching up and down the glass in and out of the water enough to stay moist😑 It's heated at 78°F, no copper, ph 7.6 possibly+ (highest point on my API ph test) I'm so worried I just want him to go back to cruising the tank like he used to. Eventually I will get him a partner but I need the ammonia level to go to 0. Where is Gary from:
I took him from my mom's 60gal because his shell and his partners shell (now deceased) were looking a bit brittle. Maybe I've made his life worst😶. I haven't put anymore food at all. He is now alone in the 10 gal tank. There were two new guppies I got on New Years to keep him company but they would nip at him above the water line thinking he was food I guess. They are (guppies) in mom's tank doing well😂... Ironic huh?Any advice?

Your a legend Kev. Love watching your vids. You e been helping me out for a few years now and I’ve learnt so much. I rarely get tank issues and all my cichlids thrive and breed. I just want to comment on the MTS and the money thing. it’s real. Im tech minded so I’m always updating my setups. My recent addition in a fully automated cooling system. With the use of pc fans and data coding the fans come on at a curtain temp and get faster if the temp continues to climb. Im forever putting money into the hobby cus I love it so much. And thanks to all your educational vids I couldn’t have done it well without your help. Keep it up my friend. 💪

I'm glad I found these videos. I had tanks 25+ years ago and always dropped in the fish the same day and never had a problem. I was either lucky, or there was less chlorine in the water back then. I'm doing it 'by the book' this time since I've just purchased a whole new set up, and fish are a LOT more expensive these days. I want them to have a happy life in my new tank. Can't wait to see the rest of the vids here on this channel.
