- Elizabeth Blount, a lady-in-waiting at the Tudor court, became one of the most talked-about figures of her time due to her relationship with King Henry VIII. Born into the Blount family of Shropshire, Elizabeth's beauty and charm caught the attention of the young King. Their liaison resulted in the birth of a son, Henry Fitzroy, whom the King openly acknowledged and even ennobled as the Duke of Richmond. Despite the public nature of their relationship, Elizabeth managed to navigate the treacherous waters of the Tudor court and later married Gilbert Tailboys, 1st Baron Tailboys of Kyme, with whom she had three children. Elizabeth's life reflects the complexities and intrigues of the early Tudor period, making her a fascinating figure in England's history.

A wonderful story, what a fascinating life this remarkable lady had. The fact that she had a lovely family life away from plots and intrigues at the Tudor Court was a success. Beautifully done. Thank you, Sir 🙏
Appreciate you watching thank you 😊
Exactly the stories I love. Someone new, new story. Enjoy all the others, the usual suspects, but so nice to see something new. And Jon...the eloquent way you narrate, no words, truly. Thank-you sooo much. I hope you have more🤞.
I have always wondered what would have happened if Henry Fitzroy would have survived?? Good video Jon. Thank you very much!❤
It's one of those conundrums in life Theresa. Thank you 😊
He probably would have been giving a title and land.
@@vivianoshea1083 He was given these (and got married, though I think they didn't actually cohabit or have a relationship as he died at 17).
I suspect Edward, as the legitimate heir, would have been King first and Henry after him as Edward died young (and any sons or daughters of Henry's after that).. Thus Mary + Elizabeth would not have reigned. (And the Jane Grey plot wouldn't have taken place).
My brother died from pancreatic cancer at half 7 tonight, I’m not looking for sympathy (I’m a Yorkshire lass lol) But watching Jon’s videos ave helped me through bad times before so I no they will help me through this bad time now. Y u might wonder? Well I absolutely adore history and listening to ppls stories from the past, and this channel brings history to life and it takes my mind of a lot of things lol. So Thank you so much history roadshow and Thank you Jon. X

I adore your channel. The writing, the photos and the narration is perfect. It amazes me how strong women were..I loved it..thank you
That means so much, thank you for your support 😊
Another beautiful video. So many strict rules that can be so easily changed depending on Henry's will.
I think so too Liam, but we all know Henry was a "what I say goes" Thanks 😊
Why does everyone paint Catherine of Aragon as having dark hair ? She is a defendant of the English and had ginger hair just as Henry did ?
Decendent
Because she was Spanish, I know some have red or blonde hair but most people think of Spanish as dark haired with olive skin, However in the "Spanish Princess" KOA was portrayed by a red haired actress .
The people of northern Spain are descended from the ancient Celts; that are known to have red hair and light eyes.
Such a well-researched story, thank you, and your voice is very soothing.
Thanks for watching 😊
Bessie Blount and Mary Boleyn both outshone Anne Boleyn, who was very graceful, intelligent and knew how to dress well, dance and play the lute, was no beauty. Something about her obviously attracted Henry. Bessie and Mary were mistresses and, although their stars did not shine as brightly as Catherine's and Anne's, their stars did not fall so dramatically. They both kept their heads and went on to have lives after their affairs with Henry. It would have been interesting if Henry Fitzroy had lived. What would have happened, I wonder, if he had outlived his half brother Edward - would the crown of England have gone to him?
Probably not. There's the matter of his being illegitimate.
To expand. Henry Fitzroy was illegitimate a fact that would have made him unacceptable as king to most of the English people. Furthermore, Catherine of Aragon was extremely popular with the people due her care for the common people while she was queen. This popularity carried over to Catherine's daughter Mary. The people refused to see Mary's claims set aside in favor of Lady Jane Gray who had much better claims on the crown than Henry Fitzroy would have. Jane had Edward's will and Mary and Elizabeth having been declared illegitimate at various points. Henry Fitzroy had no legal claim to the throne due to his illegitimate birth. Therefore, it's extremely in probable the Henry Fitzroy would have ended up with the throne. He might have claimed it but he wouldn't have kept it.
@@rebeccaorman1823 Henry might have named him as second in line to the succession as he was male and his son. Before Edward was born there was speculation that Henry intended to make him ;legitimate. Also that he intended to wed him to his half sister Mary. Henry did bend the rules to suit his own purposes.
You make some great points Susan. We'll of course never know what would have happened if Fitzroy had survived, but in my way of thinking there was a good chance Henry would have named him as heir. 😊
@@rebeccaorman1823 after Anne’s death her daughter was casted out as illegitimate as well and she still became Queen! Yes usually illegitimate children never go to rule but it think simply because he was claimed by the king infront of everyone even being illegitimate I think if he had lived he would’ve taken the throw simply because he was male and recognized by his father
What a lucky lady! She kept her head and was happily married. It is really strange that COA and AB couldn’t keep their male fetuses alive.
Childbirth was a very risky business at that time! Something that would now be easily treated at this time could kill both mother and child then. Infant mortality was appallingly high. Read Shakespeare, babies were commonly referred to as "it", not by their names or he or she. Families tried to protect themselves from getting too attached because so many children died so young!
I don't think Henry was threatened by any of his mistresses, they were simply ladies with whom he could play and walk away. Thanks 😊
A good point! Thanks 😊
AB started pregnancy in late 20s..perhaps if she started earlier, better chances of having a healthy son 🤷🏻♀️

Love you’re videos! Always so informative and captivating!
Thanks Trish much appreciated 😊
Loved it, thank you. Does anyone think that the country would have accepted Henry Fitzroy as king? Interesting to think about . 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Thanks for watching 😊
Love this story … my late husband was an infantry soldier . I have made many connections with the surname BlOUnt. The one that stands out the most is Captain James BlOUnt now musician James Blunt. The name is seen as far back as The Doomsday Book.
Your video made my day - keep spreading knowledge and positivity! ☀📽
Thank you much appreciated 😊
I ❤ History Roadshow
Thank you Nancy 😊
Bessie Blount! Thank you.
You are so welcome Lisette, thank you 😊
A story told in poem. Thank you for the well put story. Hollywood could not have said it better. A story driven by many a woman's need to feel safe. Thinking top dog. With the gals parental family also seeking a space of perceived safety. A common theme, given a historical context.
Poor Catherine.
Edward Fynes clinton and Elizabeth Blount are my direct Ancestors.
Great video Jon! Bessie managed after her affair with Henry VIII ended. She did well for herself.
She did alright in the grand scheme of things. It would be interesting to know what Henry would have done if a girl was born. Thanks Einez 😊
@@HistoryRoadshow Oh he would try again. Lol If not Bessie, with someone else. He was a ladies man then. 😉
Don’t care for weird computer graphics. Starting to see this everywhere
What a rich world....
It has it's moments Edward. Thanks for watching 😊
Elizabeth Bessie Blount had theee daughters with Edward Clinton. I am a decendant of that union many years later. I still wonder what may have happenned , had the kung a knoledge his son, Henry Fizrot and have him in line as a successor. More history is needed on Bessie, no one knows where she is even buried or how she died, but it is Ssimed ut wa in childbirth.
My third cousin is a direct descendant!
Wonder what would of happened if Fitzroy had survivec
Thank you Jon. I love everything about Tudor personalities. Must have been very hard for Catherine that Elisabeth Blount had a son with Henry. Very well presented 😊
Thank you so much Anita. Nature can be cruel, but the King was callous and without justification. 😊
She does appear to have been a beautiful woman INSIDE AND OUT. I am wondering why Henry did not consider her a marital prospect.
Too bad your video don't have caption, I really like to watch your video, but I'm hearing impaired, I need caps.
There are captions on the video in 5 languages, make sure you have CC clicked on the video when viewing. Hope this helps.
I don't think that Elizabeth Blount changed Tudor History. Had her son with Henry VIII lived beyond his teen years, married and
produced children; one of those children might have been used as a rallying point for those who opposed Mary I.
Imo if fitzroy survived, Princess Mary and Fitzroy would have come to blows. Imo mary would have won.
Likely, if only because the English people would have supported Mary just as they did against Lady Jane Gray.
Nothing like a good Tudor fight to sort out the succession! Thanks 😊
@@rebeccaorman1823 yes that is my thinking. She was Isabella's grand daughter. Isabella's brother died under mysterious circumstances. Her elder brother half brother, Enrico, may have killed him. Isabella was in house arrest. She escaped. She took out her half brother and rallied everyone around her. She married Ferdinand, but he was not king of Castile. If Mary had been more diplomatic, and married younger, I wonder if there could have been a united, stronger empire.
Thank you for a much deeper story than she is often represented by, my only niggle, and it is a niggle, is that the heroines of your videos are portrayed with flowing locks of loose hair in public places. Apart from the fact that it is really really historically inaccurate, it gives a hint that they are not respectable women. I know this would sound strange about a woman giving birth to an illegitimate child, but most women of that time would least have the appearance of respectability.
It's AI nothing you can do believe me I have tried! But thanks for watching 😊
Are you recanting history or spitting elegant poetry? U double majored in history and literature didn't you 😭
I might have gone even further than that! Thanks for watching 😊
