Hi there - it's so hard to answer this question without a picture or a video. Turning the hand is just fine, as long as you mean bringing the fourth finger knuckle (the base knuckle at the palm) closer to the neck of the violin. If I know a fourth finger is coming, I have my hand turned well in advance (2 or 3 notes earlier). I would say that the base of my fourth finger is only 1 - 2 inches away from the neck - and the first finger is stretching back more than the 4th finger stretching up. I hope that helps :)
