  • I am installing an electric inboard in my Catalina 30 sailboat. The next step for me is to Finish this already!
    As promised, a link to where I got Bedit Tape. Though the site didn't have any when I posted this.

    Hey good morning and congratulations. (translated into the human language)
    I am looking into doing something like this for a conversion from gas engines, and RUclips recommended your channel.
    Did you determine the cause of the belt noise? It sounds like it's too tight.
    Also, do the controls effect the binacle (compass)?
    I'm going to check out the build videos and get more information.
    Good job with the install and the editing skills

      Hey, thanks for mentioning the belt tension. I will re-tighten it and see if that helps. :D I haven't noticed an effect to the compass from the throttle, but I will check that out as well. Now that I have finished the install, I am going to make a HowTo video, explaining all the steps, with more organization to make thing clear. I think the videos I made are helpful, but they could use more information. :D

    My worry is about how long it will last. I'd be happier with a water-cooled one

      I have a spreadsheet I plan to keep updating. It only has the first trip on it so far. I've ordered the parts to allow me to gather all the data (in theory) so I should have better information a a couple weeks. It depends on how fast you try to go. :D There is a rough rule that for every speed increase of one knot, you double the power use. Sticking to 3 or maybe 4 knots has been said (by others) to be the sweet spot between efficiency and speed. BUT, if you have unfavorable wind and/or current, you won't be able to go 3-4knots without spending more current. I know. Clear as mud. ;D

    I recently installed one in my 1982 Hunter 27 and it runs great. Have you figured out what is causing the high winding noise?

      bolted without and cushion or anti vibration mounts

    • @openrov272
      @openrov272  Год назад +2

      The main problem is that there was no cover at all over the motor. I've checked belt tension and it seems right. With the seat/motor-cover back in position, it isn't loud, but I will be keeping an eye on the belt for wear.

    • @openrov272
      @openrov272  Год назад

      According to Thunderstruck, you don't need the anti-vibration mounts. A diesel or gas motor has a lot of vibration, which those mounts solve. But the electric motor shouldn't vibrate in operation. (unless it's broken.) Time will tell if that is true.

      @Jamie Lozada Is your motor much quieter? My belt might be riding too close to the edge of pulley hub.

    I like my air cooled Chinese 168 F diesel. It's much cheaper and lighter than electric and it charges a battery well. The dry heat is welcome.

    Can help it that despite what I see a great effort it Seems enormously under powered for going against current or rougher seas plus the weight of the boat. The bracket does not look very stable. And is that Belt functioning under a mis alignment? Of is that due to the filming? Then there seems to be no cooling for the prop shaft.. an issue in itself given water cooling doesn’t go well with electricity. having said that.. it’s a start but that does have to be the end.

      He has a dripless prop shaft installation. The bearings remain water cooled and as long as his shaft alignment is good and there is little vibration the shaft will remain sealed with the graphite friction sleve.
