"This was a GREAT night of rock and roll. To my knowledge this has remained uncirculated. There is no note of a tape on etree or the old System
live tape page. Only two people ever received a copy of the show and that was the original 1996 transfer from vastly inferior equipment. The only problem with this tape is "War".
I got caught up in the mosh pit and the microphone was disconnected. The upside of that is I had the presence of mind to notice and the tape is only 30 seconds
from being complete rather than the almost total loss it could have been. This is a remarkable document of a band on the verge of exploding on the worldwide scene. This is a virtually raw upload.
A little EQ will go a LONG way with this one. PLUS! Mike deadpanning to Gary after Peephole "Nothing like a little polka.." A seriously good time period tape/show. Have fun and enjoy!"
Thanks to Mike Butler for the recording, Mediaaddict for sharing the file and Crash Master for finding this gem.

1996 Serj looks like the early concept art for 2005 Serj
Lmao you're freaking right
@@d1mitrio he also resembles Our Lord And Saviour JESUS CHRIST
I’m just randomly scrolling through whatever comes up, and this has to be the best comment I’ve ever read
Yep, the only difference is his way heavier vocals
Looks like a mix of Serj's beard in 2002 and his hair from 2005
This is the most mysterious SOAD era
this, a few photos and their demos is about all we have from this era. Shavo has their first ever gig on video but the only clips that we've seen were in an interview and he was talking over them ..
This along with 2003-2004
@@thanasismatzi8540 well they only played like 4 shows from 2003 to 2004 and there's full video of 2 of them, reading 2003, and souls 2004. its not really very mysterious. 1995 to 1996 theres barely any footage of what they looked and sounded like and they played a handful of shows back then.
@@oui26112002 has many unknown concerts
4:17 damn Serj going straight death metal, love it
He Did Do A Walrus Scream With This One
As a fan of death metal I gotta say Serj has a good growl. Would be cool to hear SOAD write a full death metal song.
OMG I JUST REALIZED THIS IS A SHOW WITH THEIR OLD DRUMMER
Really? Andranik Khachaturyan? aka Ontronik
Yeah i was listening to the first song and i automatically knew it wasn’t John on the drums lol. John hits harder and is way more intricate. Still a badass live show
@@alruiz1989 Yeah, Andy is a great drummer, don't get me wrong, but John's just more fitting for SOAD. Andy makes it more like mid-late 80's death metal-y. SOAD had gotten their 'sound' when John joined.
I’m sorry but the groove Andy brought to the set John doesn’t have.
i really like the heavy-ness of John's drums and think I favor it more
4:39 WHY THE FU- oh right, that wasn't written in yet.
So frustrating haha
Hahahahaa 😂😂😂
I was waiting so hard 🤣
That gave me anxiety
As i read this it happend!
live audio with no john is very rare wow
@Amanze The Xzyro he left the band after an Injury and John replaced him
@@aydindagdeviren101 I met them on the tour with Slayer when the s/t album was released and had them sign an old Circus mag from years prior that had reviewed their first demo tape. I don't remember the exact comments that were made, but I got the impression that there was some less-than-warm feelings held towards Andy and his presence and/or departure from the band at that time. His drumming sounds really good on this show here though.
@@drfaustus2964"uh hello"
@@aydindagdeviren101 shavo said Andy was supposed to be temporary gone just so his hand could heal up but doctors said it would take a year plus Rick was already talking about producing them so after discussion they brought john in fully
If you think about it Andy wrote all drums for the first album. He helped shape the soad sound into what it is now and without him the band wouldn’t be where it is now
WOW, This is why they just got famous, their earlier concerts where sick.
No kidding, this sounds so crisp
Serj's voice is so amazing in this clip.

Now this is rare!
one of the few shows where the show does not end with sugar as well haha,
That's not always a bad thing ending with sugar gets old for me
Ben Lawrence it’s certainly not a bad thing, just that is what we are used to right?
I've seen them end with toxicity a couple times too

So they knew 36 would always be their 36th album song?

@@regularshow960bad bad guitar lol
Serj with a full beard. Hell yeah
1:10 "Hello, my name is Johnny..."
Verse part of B-Side track Johnny released in 2001 on Chop Suey! single and Japanese-released Toxicity💥🤘
4:54 when Daron said exactly what I was thinking and oH MY GOD WITH SUCH A CHILDISH VOICE TOO
17:03 Love it when Serj tells people to close your eyes "but I can't see you" lol
Amazing drumming by Andy!
Oh, that wasn't John? I can tell why kinda noticed the style was different, like heavier and loose, and with some triplets at the bass drum. John's style is tighter and more jazz oriented.
In Sugar he becomes berserker hahah
I love John. But i don't think I've ever danced harder to soad than this made me dance while making breakfast. -i almost burned the kids' scrambled eggs because I was too busy bouncing around! This was the first I ever heard Andy, and my mind is blown!
I’ve heard that name before
@@ontronik bruh.. Is it really you?
Just when I thought the 1997 recording was the oldest thing out there. Main take aways: 1) The songs were already written 2 years before the first record! 2) I always thought John did the drums for "Know". 3) Serj had already mastered the crazy psycho style.
Shavo and his dad have a recording with video from 1995. There's only a short clip without sound online, though. Andy isn't as fitting for them as John was, at least in my opinion. I'm glad that John was able to join in 1997. 36 was actually written half of a decade before it was on an album, so that's even more interesting.
4:18 Back in the days when Serj used to do death growls. I thought it was Corpsegrinder for a second lol
Yeah 😂 Especially at 29:26
I thought SOAD was sooo much beter when Serj sang and not Daron.
Mmmm idk he stopped growling after 2003
@@ConsideratelyKillingMe that wasnt serj btw
@@TheFriendlyBola dude who was it, they sounded great
now this why I like the youtube... cuz of these dirty little gems
"Honey" is such a great song. Same with "Marmalade" although that wasn't played here.
Andre Willomitzer this is easily the best live version of Honey, Serj's voice and Andy's drumming are amazing in that recording.
I Agree but Marmalade was made in '97
I was literally just gonna comment that honey is awesome. Top ten songs by them for me for sure
This is fucking amazing! I had been waiting for a pre-1997 live audio or video for ages!
the dude from the band Helen 55 put up a full video of this gig a few months ago. probably the earliest publicly available, full System show I'd guess
It's nice to know I performed rock music on the same stage as SOAD.
They will forever be my favorite band.
Weird how they performed 36 here but it's their 36th song in their discography. Just goes to show how early on these songs were thought of.
In a 1998 show they played the Aerials riff as an intro for Mind.
@@ryanz48 which gig?

It reminds me of Eminem freestyling verse from 2006 in 2002
@@krzysztof4607 "No Apologies" was written around 2002
Love John (huge influence on my drumming) but Andy invented the System drumming style and you can tell he was very good and way more confortable with the toms compare to John and very good with the groove to.
Arigato
@@ontronik
are you actually the man himself? if so, you're a damn good drummer
@@TheLarryburns84 yes he is!
The only live show where we can hear andy, i have to. Say, he was a pretty solid drummer
Shite their old drummer was a really hard hitter,
John hits harder. Especially in his prime he was a monster, still is. Not saying Andy isn't a bad drummer he's great but I prefer John
Good times
@@ontronikWAIT YOUR THE OLD DRUMMER

The sound quality is amazing for 1996 tape. The bass is amazing.
This is so surreal. Also, Ontronik on the drums. \o/

Can't fucking believe it. This is outstanding, this is the first time I can unironically say "I was born in the wrong generation".
Victims Of A Down and ObeyYourSystem love you both for uploading rare footage
Guys, in war i can hear the missing part, but in a very low volume, if i can fix i upload it

If you listen close enough, you can still hear audio during that really quiet part of war.
Oh damn, you actually can
The microphone probably just got mistakenly covered for a minute
So glad y'all shared this. This is awesome. Thank you.
God damn!! I saw a post of ObeyYourSystem here in RUclips about this concert, and I thought it was some kind of April Fool's joke. Utterly insane. The mighty System Of A Down, the band that we all love, on their first steps. Only some early '96 and '95 performances could be different.
This just turned my SOAD world upside down
what's amazing is that "Your own pace" or "36" is the 36th song if you play their first 3 LP's in order, but i guess they named (or numbered) the song way before it was on an album
It used to be .36 like the gun
Then they just had the oppurtunity
But again, I don't count it, because I consider both self-titled and Toxicity having 16 songs because of Marmalade, Störagéd, The Metro, Johnny and Arto
Absolutely insane find! It's incredible seeing how far they have came after all these years.
Can’t believe that no one mentioned Shavo has a shirt on!
Shavo always wore shirts at this time. And did again 2003 and on
@@romaretaylor9953 hmm interesting. I take your word fellow SOADer

This is Gold !
I remember being sad about not getting to go to this show because Dragonfly was 21+
This sucks lol. Did you manage to attend any other gig they had on those years?
Victims Of A Down Haha yes, most of them. And nearly all of the studio practices; I was dating one of them before the band even existed so I watched it all happen❤️
@@amnocturne that's so dope! If you don't mind emailing me anytime, would be amazing to read some stories from their early years. Stay safe! (soad.jpg@gmail.com)
Victims Of A Down I’ll add a tidbit here😊 The practices were pretty normal to start with, I’d be there watching with someone’s best friend or brother, etc...usually the band plus 2-5 other people. Once things really progressed, though, and word got out about them - Saturday nights the small, windowless studio would be busting at the seams. 50? 70?! people? Like a giant house party. I remember standing on the toilet in the teensy restroom, surrounded by handful of folks, taking rips out of a 6ft bong...just super fun insanity!
@@amnocturne Was that at their resersal place in north hollywood? Heard about that a bunch of times! Those parties seemed to be a bomb lol... amazing to read. Do you have flyers, photos or anything from those years?
Waiting for the Leeds 2003 one and the full show of hollywood paladium 2003
And Souls Benefit 2000, of course!
Setlists say that they performed ATWA at that concert, man I'd love to hear a fucking 2000 version of it
+Błażej Sowul ATWA, Bounce, Prison Song, Shimmy and Aerials. All first time live, except for Prison Song.
Spyros PETS would be awesome if they publish it
Spyros PETS and pictures
"H'ello, my name's Johnny." I can see where SoaD's Johnny song came from.

Wow, the drummer is still Andy Khachaturian, real Rare.
What a gem! Thanks for sharing.

Damm sick ass drummer! Very fast! Why did they replace him. It must of been a personal issue. And the song honey caught me by suprise!
I think John is awesome as well
He broke his hand..... but that’s not the only reason. He and Daron didn’t get along. Andy was hot headed. Daron had no patience for his antics specially when they were about to explode. In fact, I THINK he broke his hand by punching a wall or something.
