    Thank you very much for your informative videos. I also watched the tips for street photography and got really inspired by your talent, common sense approach to photography, respecting the privacy of others, but most of all being very humble person at the same time. Truly impressive. May I ask how you decide on which particular lens you are going to shoot the scene? Thank you for sharing your passion with the world.

      Sure. My primary lenses for street are the 25, 40 and 85 lenses. I usually select which lens or lenses I’ll shoot with that particular day. Since I’m back to 2 cameras now the 85 is on my Alpha 9 and the wider lenses are on the 7R II. I’ll shoot based on what I feel I want to capture that particular day, whether it’s wider, architectural images or more focused images on the 85.

    Found you through Jason's video & got inspired by your work! I have Sony A7III body and two Sony lenses; 85mm F1.8 which I really love and Sony 18-105mm F4 G OSS which I use mostly for videos. Can you recommend lens options for food photography/videography? And what are the options to replace my current APS C Lens?

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад +1

      A lens that’s a macro or close focusing lenses would be good to consider, such as the Sony 90mm Macro or ZEISS 40mm CF perhaps.
      The Sony 24-105mm would be a perfect replacement for that, as that gives you essentially the same range as that but being a full frame lens variant.

    I have an A7II and I like to use the Loxia 50mm and the 28mm f/2. The Loxia is special to me because it's fun to use, it's fairly discreet, and I like the neutral tone that it produces. The 28mm is good on the go, and can handle wide shots and portraits well. Hear me out, but the 42mm when on APS-C mode is an odd but fun focal length.

    Hello Professor, I have a question. I currently have Batis 85 and Sony 24 GM should i get a 50mm 1.4 Zeiss or 40mm f2 Zeiss for a general middle ground?

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад

      That will depend on what you’re looking at most, such as more depth of field/bokeh and low light capability from the 1.4 or smaller size and lighter weight of the 40mm, along with it’s close focusing capability. I like both but i actually opt for the 55mm 1.8 and the 40mm. I never use them together and I always go for either or, depending on what I’m doing. The 55 was my first lens for mirrorless years ago and I refuse to part with it but added the 40 the day it was released. Love both. The 50mm for me personally was never a big need that I felt I really needed.

I also use the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/4 kit lens as my all around go to. I currently shoot with an X-T1, X-Pro 1 and X-E2s (which is my favorite as it's small and light).

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад +2

      You 100% correct, David. Image quality and color will be the same across all the ZEISS lenses. Where they differ is on which family of lenses you go with. The Loxia for instance do have a more crisp image than the Batis. It's similar to what the Otus lenses are in the F and EF mounts, vs that of a Milvus, which is still good like Batis, but the Otus has a more crisp clean look, especially when you're photographing people - very noticeable to me there and in certain landscape scenes. Hope this helps.

    hi, I've been thinking for a while about getting the 40mm, however I recently heard from some people that if you focus closer to you, the aperture starts closing, so you can't shoot at f/2 at all distances. Is that a problem you've encountered? If yes, then how much of a dealbreaker is that? Thanks!

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  3 года назад +1

      Yes that is something that happens with the 40mm. There was an update after release that was done but don’t remember exactly what that did for that situation. As for actual usage it’s not a deal breaker. Closer up on subjects I stopped down my aperture anyways, as wide open is too much blur most times. I especially stopped down with macro lenses but sold them all and kept the 40mm.

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад +1

      I can’t make that decision for you, but I will just say that between them there’s varying differences that make me continue to retain both of them.
      The 40 having close focusing makes it a great alternative for me to my manual 50mm Macro ZEISS and gives it an edge over the 55. The 40 also has better focusing than the 55, but where I like the 55 is in the focal length, as I’m just more use to it than the 40. I never take those two lenses out together and change between them, depending on what I may be doing, but I personally can’t ever get rid of my 55, which was my first E mount lens I bought for my original a7.

      Same here 55 was my first lens on my R3 and I’m really like it, light, sharp and small lens. Also like focal length, so I think will keep it. Also considered what you said, never take out both of them together. Well same here, 55mm better “normal” focal length for general street photography for me.
      I will try Batis 40, hope those focus issues are fixed with fw update,

      This was not a review video of the lens, therefore that kind of info was excluded here. A video focused more on the lenses themselves and not a specific genre like this is in the works, however. If you'd like that kind of info in the mean time you can find size and weight on the ZEISS website or through more general reviewers here on RUclips. Hope this helps!

    Does Zeiss make batis lenses for either Fuji or Nikon at this time?

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад

      No unfortunately. ZEISS Touit are lenses designed for Fujifilm X Mount and Sony E (APS-C) mount and ZEISS Otus and Milvus are designed for Nikon and are manual lenses. You can find more on the family of lenses here: www.dynamicvisionphotography.com/post/615636079414034432/zeiss-lens-families

      Oh absolutely! ZEISS is just what I prefer to utilize. The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens and actually one I use to use and own for many years back in my Sony DSLR days. Don’t feel like what you have isn’t capable or that you have to have ZEISS, as that’s not the case. 😊

      Are you okay with manual lenses (as all of the ZEISS for Nikon are manual)? If so, you have many available. If you don't want to spend a crap ton then look at the ZEISS Classic lenses. They're the older variant to the Milvus line. They're not weather sealed and are a bit older of course, but you can find great prices on those, especially the 50 and 85mm lenses. www.professorhines.com/zeiss-lenses-reviews

Sometimes I shoot also on my dslr but I just love the feeling of shooting with film and my dslr is better for portraitshoots where I need the pictures directly! I'm surprise you chose the Loxia 50mm over the 35mm. The Loxia 35mm is always on my camera body. I can see why though, taking longer to manual focus from closer distances and all. Also, if money was no issue. Would you still choose the Sony 55mm f1.8 over the 50mm f1.4? I can't justify owning both Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 and Loxia 50mm but I'm still debaiting. Both are too similar in my mind.

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад +2

      Well to answer the first part the reason behind that was including the new Batis 40mm CF lens. I didn’t want to choose many lenses that are close or shared in range with another lens and the Loxia 35mm wouldn’t be a lens most would choose vs the 40mm. I wanted 1 of the Loxia’s so I went with the 50mm. The 35mm is my most used on my a6000 camera at the moment. Of the two the 35mm I prefer more than the 50mm however 🤷🏽‍♂️
      I could have bought the 50mm 1.4, but it’s way too big of a lens. That’s why I sold my 35mm 1.4 the day the Batis 40mm was released. 1.4 lenses are too big for what I do everyday and the 55mm for the price and size is too hard to beat. It’s the only Sony/ZEISS prime I still own and will never sell that lens.

    Can you describe the caracteristic differences between Zeiss Loxia 50 and Sony Sonnar 55? I own the 55 and love It but I have looked on images from the Loxia 50 and heard great things of It's color rendition more than sharpness, that It render more realistic and that the colors dont need so much process In post. I would miss my AF If I didn't have my 55 though.

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  4 года назад +1

      All ZEISS lenses are color matched, but in the reproduction of an image the Loxia’s to me do come across with a very unique look. Describing it vs just seeing it visually is difficult to do, but the look from the Loxia’s I like quite a bit.

    What are your thoughts on the Zeiss Batis 18mm? What could it be used for?

    • @professorhineschoice
      @professorhineschoice  3 года назад +2

      It's a great lens. I use to own it, but only for a short time (as I already owned the 16-35mm at the time and it being wider I didn't replace it with the Batis 18). If you're wanting a wide angle lens for interior images, wide vista/landscape images, etc... it's a very good lens. There's many other lenses around that range to consider, however so it's a decision of having a compact wide prime or something more versatile like the Sony 12-24 wide angle, which is a much larger lens.
