Great data driven approach! I realized when I was on a zoom lens that I also only used the extremes, rarely in the middle. I think that’s a natural thing when on a zoom. So I invested in a good 50mm and use that for 90% of my work! Now the zoom only goes on if I need wide or medium telephoto.
Filtering my travel images some years ago by focal length is also how I discovered 35mm equivalent being my favourite focal length 😊 Had an 16-70 back then and for most of my shots I zoomed into 24ish on APSC. Analyzing my images I also confirmed for myself that I really don't like 24mm equiv. 😅 That's why I today only have one single lens having 24mm... And it's just the tiny sigma F3.5 cause I don't want to waste any space for it. (Just a backup for big groups at weddings but mostly 35mm works. And I guess using it in crop mode for 4k60 video doesn't count 😂 Back to 35mm; I've double checked this then after my second year doing weddings. I unnecessarily upgraded my 85mm to an expensive 1.4 cause I thought I made my best work with it but it was actually with the cheaper 35mm 1.8😅
Interesting video, thank you Sam. Two things: 1. First off, how crazy is ChatGPT to be able to plot based on screenshots?! That would be a copy/paste, excel, then pivot table job for me and would probably take the better part of an hour and a lot of grumbling about why Lightroom doesn't just allow a .csv export or visualisation in app. 2. Is there a way to find out how much cropping is done in post that essentially changes the FL? I found when I was shooting exclusively with a 35 and 50 for a year (just to have some visual "coherence" in my portfolio) I found that while I was shooting most of my images at 35 and cropping juuust a little to about a 40 FoV, I found with the 50 I was cropping to closer to what an 80 would give. So in the end I decided 35/80 would probably be a better combination for me. 2.5. Why are most major camera manufacturers allergic to making good 28mm lenses? Feels like Leica is the only one that loves this focal length but I've been waiting for Canon.. and now Sony to release one for mirrorless but it doesn't seem like it's on anyone's cards!
I find it better to make a folder of my favorite images and then analyze my most used focal lengths of those images…. 40-45mm seems to be my sweet spot

thanx for great idea. really help determine which prime lens to be tried
Glad it was helpful!

1) yup!! 2) nope! 3) i have nooo idea. it’s pretty odd

but this way you don’t have to bother with a folder at all
this is just making me have a hard time between choosing whether to buy a 48mm or 49mm prime…
honestly a 45 would probably be my go to if they made one. i love my 45 tilt shift!
Thank you, 35mm 50mm 85mm
FOURTH!!!!
clearly the best spot is 4th lol
