How would these perform in a sub tropical city like Houston TX? I just found your videos, thank you for the content.
35c and 80 percent humidity is normal for 60 days a year
Thank you for watching!
Nail laminated timber can be used in warm, humid climates, but it requires careful design and management to address moisture related challenges. The wood's sensitivity to humidity can affect its dimensional stability and durability. Proper treatment against fungi and insects, effective ventilation, and moisture control are all crucial. Overall, successful use of NLT in these climates demands thoughtful planning, appropriate treatments, and tailored moisture management to ensure longevity and structural integrity.
Hope this answers your question!
What kind of expansion occurs with an NLT floor? I'm interested in using it as a monolithic slab on grade. If the lab was completely inside a conditioned building envelope what kind of lateral expansion might occur over say 30 ft?
Here are the general figures you can use to calculate swelling or shrinkage for any slab size:
For every 1% change in moisture content, the wood expands or contracts by approximately:
- 0.001% in the longitudinal direction
- 0.0015% in the radial direction
- 0.030% in the tangential direction
Keep in mind that these values may vary depending on the specific wood species. Additionally, once the wood reaches its fibre saturation point (typically between 27% and 33%), it no longer expands.
