Oh how I wish I had your knowledge and tools when I was a younger man. I used to collect and rebuild bikes to give away at Christmas time. Now that I am older arthritis and other health issues keep me from doing what I love. Thank you for sharing your videos. (I love those older, single speed, coaster brake bikes.)
I’m in quarantine at the moment waiting to go to work offshore, and making a shopping list to do my first big rebuild after i just got in to cycling (road). I have a 80s Giant Peleton bike which i really like, and your channel has inspired me to invest in to paint and parts. I’m a hobby mechanic but needed some visual guidance from someone, and your are it. Thanks a bunch!
"There's something magical about a bike... especially a single speed, coaster brake bike... that takes me back to my childhood" Amen to that. This build is absolutely majestic, and I would feel like a rock star riding it.
Love how this bike keeps getting better, but still nostalgic. Bikes make us feel like kids again, you know like when you had no real responsibilities and were pretty much free to just enjoy every day as it came.
A bike like this is so fun. I received a pair of 1992 Murray beach cruisers from my folks, that don’t ride anymore. They knew I’d do something with them. I stripped them down, built up one, but added a 36t bmx chainring to the stock crankset, a nexus 3spd rear coaster hub, and some 8in ape hangers. Stock 26in street tires. The bike is a joy to ride around town and on paths. You’d think it would be heavy and clunky but no, it really is fun and nimble. The 3sp improves the practicality without detracting from the feel of a single sp/coaster brake bike.
Beautiful bike, I'm a sucker for the Schwinn cantilever cruiser frame. I have three of them. A 1986 single speed cruiser painted flat black that I converted back in 2020 to a BMX style very similar to yours with the low rise BMX bars, World Force Shorty 50mm stem. I don't like coaster brakes so I converted it to free wheel and mounted a Diacompe Bulldog front brake, Profile SS cranks/bottom bracket, Kink Chainring, GT platform pedals and a Brooks B17 saddle. It came stock with a BMX style looking fork which I've kept on it but I've toying with the idea of mounting my old Girvin front suspension fork on it... 1980 Schwinn Cruiser 5 (grocery getter) I kept it the original color Cardinal Red and converted it to a 7 speed with Shimano XT cranks/chainring derailleur, Matrix rims w/ System 1 hubs, Profile Design low rise bars and a World Force 100mm stem, clip on plastic fenders, rear mount cargo rack, platform pedals and of course a Brooks B17 saddle 1960 Schwinn Panther which I've kept original with the OG seat, grips, chrome fenders, front and rear cargo racks all still in good shape. It's the headlights, trimline tank and chain guard but I still love it...
Sure like your vids, that's a beautiful redo. I'm 67. I had two coaster brake schwinns, a ~67 stingray (which i wish i still had since they are worth big moolah now) and a ~60 tiger? or something. Stingray was two speed. Other was one speed. Thanks for all the dynamite videos this channel is really special. Took a wicked fall ten days ago 39 miles into a road ride. Crashed going 18mph. two chicks inline skating landed on top of me. broke pelvis in two places and two ribs in three places. twelve weeks estimate until back on my 89 trek 8500.
Completely feel the same as you. I have an old 80's road peugeot frame bike wich I converted in singlespeed coaster brake and it's my favourite bike to ride aroind town and smooth trails. The lack of noises and simplicity and also a cambium brooks saddle wich I absolutely love. Thumbs up for your kunkler and keep riding!!
Just found your channel. Great stuff. I love this clunker and great upgrades but there is something about recycling parts that makes me smile. Either way new subscriber. 🙏
I am in love with this bike!!! Watching your vids made me excited to put some life back in to an old fixie I had put aside for so long I thought it was a lost cause... I had just bought a brand new 26 inch bmx, but since restoring my fixie I've been on that bad boy non-stop 😁 lol Love all your videos and hope to see more!
Finally! Oldshovel meets the woodworking videos I’ve been watching! You just showed me another use for that wipe on poly. Why didn’t I think of that? Because I’m not Oldshovel. I love the paint scheme and the experienced look can’t be replaced. Thanks for another great Saturday morning!
I'm here from Brazil I always follow your videos, you're certainly an inspiration, because of your videos I went back to riding a bike, and I was inspired to renovate an old bike from 1985, congratulations you're sensational !!
@@oldshovel I'm planning on building one myself. I recently acquired a beach cruiser bike that I'm going to modify with dirt tires, a front fork with suspension, wide BMX handlebars, and a three piece crank. The frame itself is about 20 years old. But since it's modern specks, it should be easier to work with. Some of your videos were also part of what inspired me to want to build a Klunker. I wanted to specialize in rebuilding road bikes. But now I think Klunkers are what I wanna do.
I really love what you've done with that bike! I wish some day I'll do something like this. The only thing I'd change is the seatpost, or at least sand it.
Such a cool build and you can tell how much that bike means to you... Even though its probably one of the most simple bikes you have... You love riding it
That is one cool bike. I need to build something like this to use around my place. I literally live 175 yards from my job and 250 yards from the dollar store, Post Office and pharmacy. I just need to build a "klunker bike" for commuting to work and running errands.
I love the retro style bikes like your klunker 💯🚲 I have a aluminium schwinn beach cruiser bike 3 speed with coaster brake and love the style and simplicity of it.
Excellent build. Aesthetically I prefer the original flat bar, but the ergonomics of the riser bar are probably better. I’m also jealous of your trail. Perfect for that bike and exactly what I’m looking for to take my family on. I only seem to find fire trails or gnarly trails! Keep on building!
Been a mechanic non-stop for my whole life and I'm in love with this build and all of your builds. Amazed at the risks you take with tire clearance. It turns out fantastic. You obviously have great mechanical knowledge but I would recommend adding a washer to the axle of the rear hub on the drive side to reduce possible wear to the frame from when chain tension eventually needs to be adjusted. Possibly on the non-drive side as well. Those old thin steel dropouts can be a bitch sometimes.
I'm building my bike up to be this I cant wait to see what it can do I've rode it 150 miles so far just as a cruiser with off road tires. Its gonna be beast.
I had a Panther with basically the same frame. It had the fork with the spring at the top. My favorite handling bicycle. The front would push just the slightest bit and the rear promptly followed with imperceptible input from me. I never should have let it go.
I just ordered a set of the Oury v2 grips. I am searching for the right grips for me and I keep seeing the Oury grips on your bikes and am looking forward trying them when they arrive in a few days.
are there any decent 1" threaded suspension forks? I'd like to try putting one of them in my 1953 schwinn but I don't want to alter it so it won't take a quill stem anymore
yeah mountain biking or trail riding is a great get away and i love these old bikes i am 17 and i have what looks like a 1980s rockhopper and i think its time for a suspension fork tbh lol anyway love the bike great work
Hi. Great project. Would you be kind enough to share the exact Minwax product that you were using? I just picked up an old Monark frame for a similar project. The patina is beautiful and I want to preserve it. Many thanks!
This makes me want to build a klunker. Can you tell me more about the coating you put on the frame? I have some old steel frames with some tiny rust spots. Does that coating help that?
Love the upgrades! When I saw that Brooks box, it was like the cherry on top! I’d like to hear about that poly rub on coat and how it holds up over time?!
I’m curious too. I’ve had the polyurethane for a while from some other projects and wondered if it would look good on a patina’ed bike frame. I love the more oily look it has over a spray on varnish. I did a couple coats. I think it may work well but we’ll see with time.
It's really interesting to see componentry from worlds apart meet together on this klunker.I mean, where else would you see modern MTB rims get laced to Sturmey Archer hubs that are usually at home on commuter bikes? In hindsight though, this makes for a very simplified MTB setup that requires very little mantainence, and who wouldn't love that?
I love it that the saddle is worth more than almost the whole rest of the build. Fun bike!
Lol 😂
The pricey part is the wheelset, not the saddle
They’re both nice. Well with the investment for the joy they will bring. 😁
A metaphor, for life :)
The frame is probably worth way more than all the parts

The front wheel clearance is tight as hell!
😁🙌🙌
That’s one thing I thought I would never see coaster brake with tubeless
I also think that is pretty cool
high quality valve *noted always really

1960 Schwinn Panther which I've kept original with the OG seat, grips, chrome fenders, front and rear cargo racks all still in good shape. It's the headlights, trimline tank and chain guard but I still love it...
Excellent. When that saddle is worn in it’ll be even better.
This video and the previous one, have given me loads of ideas for a pair of circa 1960 Murray bicycles. Thanks for the impetus to keep them alive!
Yes! A riding video! Awesome stuff and agreed about the saddle.
I just picked up an old Columbia Clipper, going to do a Klunker build. Thanks for the inspiration!
Awesome 🙌
Rad bike! I am currently hunting down a old frame because I want to build me a real klunker. Thanks for sharing!

Nice find on that hub! I despise the tube on the rear of my cruiser. Looks like a great chance to play with wheel building.
Just found your channel. Great stuff. I love this clunker and great upgrades but there is something about recycling parts that makes me smile. Either way new subscriber. 🙏
Coaster brakes. 👍 Cool you preserved the original paint
What a great bike you have . I so look forward to your videos, I find them so therapeutic and most enjoyable. Enjoy that beautiful old bike. Cheers.
That was a fantastic job.Thank you for the huge effort sharing it with us
That saddle looks so so comfortable!
Thanks for leaving the original paint :-), nice usage of a natural leather saddle and chrome bar. Like it :-)
That saddle seat, is the cherry on top of the cake 👌🏽
I am in love with this bike!!! Watching your vids made me excited to put some life back in to an old fixie I had put aside for so long I thought it was a lost cause... I had just bought a brand new 26 inch bmx, but since restoring my fixie I've been on that bad boy non-stop 😁 lol Love all your videos and hope to see more!
Awesome thanks
Lovely old bike and a brookes saddle…..well done old chap….from across the pond 👍👍
when most of the components installed are new school but the body frame is vintage.. dang! this one is absolutely a masterpiece.....
So nice! That is one badass klunker you have built.
Finally! Oldshovel meets the woodworking videos I’ve been watching! You just showed me another use for that wipe on poly. Why didn’t I think of that? Because I’m not Oldshovel. I love the paint scheme and the experienced look can’t be replaced. Thanks for another great Saturday morning!

The bars sets that bike off, that is just a awesome build
Fantastic. I wish I lived near you and could watch you and learn how to build up a wheel with new hub and spokes.
Need a new Klunker video
Agreed. I’m constantly looking for another one to build.

Now it's perfect, never liked the flat bars on it! Klunk yeah!
Nice upgrades, while keeping the look classic. Looking forward to the next build!
Thanks
So awesome! Love the Sturmey Archer hubs!! Way to go Old Shovel.
Thanks
Such a cool build and you can tell how much that bike means to you... Even though its probably one of the most simple bikes you have... You love riding it
I remember the days of my single speed coaster bike. Great feeling. Great video!

I just bought the same saddle (in black) for my urban hybrid bike, so far I like it a lot.
Awesome
I love that saddle, too. That is true craftsmanship. 👍
can't help but catch that singlespeed klunker bug after that video. that singletrack looks incredible too.
I love the retro style bikes like your klunker 💯🚲
I have a aluminium schwinn beach cruiser bike 3 speed with coaster brake and love the style and simplicity of it.
Seeing this klunker makes me wanna rebuild my old schwinn now. Now I'm gonna need to make myself a list.
Awesome rebuild with the perfect saddle, great job 👏
BMX bar for the win 🏆
Awesome video! Super cool build! I want to make a Klunker bike and was thinking of putting on a double springer monark fork.🤔
Even I don't agree with the Rockshox she is an absolute beauty! Cheers from Australia
Very cool twist on that build. Wow..1975 all over again👍👍
What a great bike, love the mix of parts, great build
Excellent job,..as always.!! I will like to see a 20" vintage bmx bike restored by you..

Qué se ve bonito el marco.Cuál es el producto de limpieza en spray?.
This is my favorite bike on this channel
I'm building my bike up to be this I cant wait to see what it can do I've rode it 150 miles so far just as a cruiser with off road tires. Its gonna be beast.
*It looks fantastic!😎👍🏻 I have a roundish 1950’s frame and I guess I know what’s gonna be my next project!🤔😅*
Nice build, what travel are the Judy C3s?
Oh man, that frame is so cool!
You made that wheelset build look so easy. It was a classier version of Sam Pilgrim tossing tires onto the rims. ;-)
Lol 😂 I love Sam’s build clips. Awesome
A sharp looking ride!
Were there issues with chain line?
If so, did you just use spacers on the frame side?
It’s a classic clunker, looks so nice 👍
any 1" front susspension you could recommend? i'm about to rebuild like '94 GT Timberline bike.
Awesome bike and place to ride it!
are there any decent 1" threaded suspension forks? I'd like to try putting one of them in my 1953 schwinn but I don't want to alter it so it won't take a quill stem anymore
love it, just wish you would have shown your process for adjusting the rear rim to tighten the chain with that type of drop out
It’s old school man, you just pull the wheel back until the chain looks right and then tighten the axel nuts.
I luv the S/A hub set, I wanna do something similar w/ a geared S/A hub. could be a coaster, who knows
Nice bike, love the Brooks. If you put the clamp the other way around it's more inside the saddle and less visible, looks nicer to me.
Great bike! And the message is always the same... If you have a bad day... Go for a ryde 💪 Cheers from Argentina
Work of ART brother!!!!!!
Those trails look so fun, where are they?
I Love this build. How does the 32x18 gearing feel?
How did you get the honey brooks saddle from Jenson? I've been in line backordered for a month now, and the availability keeps pushing out.
yeah mountain biking or trail riding is a great get away and i love these old bikes i am 17 and i have what looks like a 1980s rockhopper and i think its time for a suspension fork tbh lol anyway love the bike great work
I like your content, they are starting to make videos in this format here in Brazil
How did you get a new headset, new-ish fork, and bottom bracket to fit that frame?

Highly anticipated, much appreciated.
hello - like the vid - just q question, with the adapter, you end up using a 73mm bottom bracket?
Very awesome build old shovel
Love your videos. Is it possible to get these hubs all set up in new wheels?
Yes, I built up the wheels myself but I’m sure a local shop could do the same.
This makes me want to build a klunker. Can you tell me more about the coating you put on the frame? I have some old steel frames with some tiny rust spots. Does that coating help that?
It’s rub on polyurethane, it should help. I’m using it as a light clear coat.
@@oldshovel thanks for the details!
Yeah just a simple single speed can remind you of your love of cycling.❤
Your next build should be a mountain fixie. That's my favorite with only a front disk. Out of my 3 bikes, that's the one I always grab.
I never would have thought to put polyurethane on a bike frame. How durable is it?
Your videos are awesome. Thank you so much for what you do!
Do you install a 8 Speed Shimano chain or 1 Speed (1/2 x 1/8")?
I love the handlebar.
Awesome bike. Those wheels are sick.
Cool build! How tall of a rise on the bars? What is your gearing?
The gearing is 18t in the back 32T upfront.
Sorry if i didnt hear, but what size gears are you running?
18t in the back and 32t upfront
@@oldshovel Awesome! Thank you sir!
