We're back, the previous episode having been posted back in early 2018! Because of the lock down I can't travel and now I've got the time to continue this series.
The dual sport adventure continues, returning to Russia and finalizing a dash of over 5000km for the border. The fastest way out of the country is to take an old Soviet ferry boat from Vanino to Sakhalin island and from there take the international ferry from Korsakov Russia to Japan. On the way down to Vladivostok and back up I'm putting down 800 to 1100km's daily for six days straight. Now that I'm taking the ferry to Hokkaido this Russian port city has become a massive detour all the while having no time left. But this was originally the final destination of my motorcycle trip and I could not have lived with myself not traveling there in the end. Camping for days on end next to fuel stations and on parking lots, the fatigue accumulating with the long riding days into the night while fighting time zones and the uncertainty always increasing since the ferries turned out to be less straightforward to book. With 10 days left on my Russian visa there is barely any room for mistakes and delays. Russia has a notorious reputation when it comes to overstaying visas and other riders in the past have run into serious complications. These ten days were the least fun and it turned out to be a massive learning experience for this solo traveler. Still, you never fail to meet some great people along the way..

My name is Pedro Mota and back in 2014 I left the Netherlands on a Honda Transalp dual sport motorbike on a trip to Vladivostok on the eastern end of Russia. On the way there we took a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorbike travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.
The old series is back! Half of it recorded on a potato when the camera was more of a diary than anything else, back when I still though wind noise was a myth.

This is my dream trip: through Mongolia and Russia to Japan. You made it, I hope me and my V-Strom can do it too. I am starting from Poland, I am planning it for 2023, I hope that by then we will all forget about the pandemic and it will finally be possible to travel freely.

The old Held helmet is back! Haven`t seen that on your head for a while. It gave me a bit of re-lived anxiety this Video as I`ve had this happen a few times. Not enough time and too far to go. Visas suck man big time, they truely are a travellers nightmare. I think they do it on purpose to test us.

It might be me or it might be the extra lockdown hours you put in but this was one of the better video's in this series i think. Great that you broke the editors block!

Wow, what a difference between the two ferries! The Russian janky thing made the professionalism and cleanliness of the Japanese ferry feel almost alien! I bet the difference felt crazy in person.

Japan ferry looks MUCH BETTER than the Russian one, which was scary! Japanese are clean people. Glad you made it in one piece!
I'm from Russia(but this country is too big and everything changes from places and time) and don't have any trouble of fueling gas. Just place gas pistol inside fuel tank, goes into gas station and say that you need full tank, some stations will ask a deposit from you(probably 1000 russian ruble) but most of them just let you fueling up and then pay. But i live in a middle of a Russia - Ural, so maybe this trouble only at east of our country.

Hi dude, ive watched loads of your videos, really great stuff. I have some questions tho: what tyres do you use for long distance open road kinda stuff like this video or what would you recommend
to look for in a tyre for this job ?
And also how do you manage fuel and filling up fuel ? Especially over extreme distances when you dont know when the next fuel station is ? Just carry an extra jerry can or two ?

No, for Japan the cost of entering would have been the same with or without carnet so I chose not to use it. Don't need one for Mongolia. I did use iit for Iran, Australia and New Zealand

No worries. Also worth knowing, I only learned this later, is that in some carnet countries it is possible to sort out a deposit (bond) that can be made on entry which they return once you leave the country. They can do this in Iran from what I can tell but always worth doing your own research. The thing is there might be other costs attached and that's the thing with carnets as far as I can tell: might be cheaper and less hassle without one if you're going through only one country, but when going through multiple carnet countries it is probably cheaper to get one. Yeah the deposit is a kick in the nads.
Thing about that though: deposits depends on the country too. Soo for Iran it was 3000 euros, but Oz and Nz it was 1500. So when requested the German ADAC returned me half of my deposit while I was in New Zealand. Also what was really nice of them is that when I was in need they were willing to return the remaining half of the deposit while in South America. So not only after returning to Europe as is stated in the conditions. Indeed it's a big lump of money that most of us would need for the trip itself, but there are ways to get it back sooner than expected. This of course can depend on who issues the carnet so again worth researching beforehand.
Have a blast, Japan is a 1 in a planet kind of country, budget extra for the glorious food there.

haha. when i was 20 years old and recorded my first "adventure" to spain it was impossible to get lost of this big videotaperolls. Now as i am 50+ it happends pretty fast that some footage gets lost and you find it some months or years somewhere in your computer......... anyway, well done Pedro and keep on moving. :-)
Nice bulky camcorder and a bag of tapes. Footage does get misplaced, especially the footage of old phones. I've goot all the footage on portable hdd's, always try to be careful not to ctrl-x instead of ctrl-c when transferring to the laptop for a new video because those files I later delete from the laptop. Also twice I learned the hard lesson of not to ctrl-z in Windows when the laste thing you did was transfer files from a full sd card directly to the laptop and format the sd card. Poof, files gone by being "undone".

They were doing the same with gasoline in 1971 when I went to the Soviet Union. We would estimate high on our fills & put the excess in a 10 liter gas containers we each carried.

Have you ever gotten so tired of riding that you almost fell asleep while riding? Would you sleep beside the road if possible before pushing on? Or how do you handle this?
Something else wrt the topping up of tanks - would it be possible to make some type of depth dipstick do you can measure your fuel tank to determine how much fuel it would take? That way you can fill to the max without wasting money.
Very entertaining journey. Why no direct transport from Vanino to Japan? Personnel on Japanese ferry seemed more friendly than those on Russian ferry.

This seems so much more stressful than your traveling now. Would you say thats down to the language barrier or you're just more experienced now?
This wasn't how I intended to travel but the Russia visa had been on my mind for a while already, didn't want to miss out too much on Central Asia and Mongolia because of it. I paid for that with the most stressful stint ever and I never wanted to repeat that again. In my mind I flipped the switch to get it over with and keep going since it had to happen but it wasn't fun. There was no time so I couldn't soak up the culture and find out what was going on at the fuel stations, just a singular focus on that boat to Japan (language would have helped for sure). Many lessons learned on time spent on a bike, managing expectations and destination fixation.
@@iPedroMota I recall in long way round they also had visa time issues in Russia. Its a shame it had to be rushed. Maybe a trip back to do the road of bones is in your future.
@Сперти за правду I had that, three months business visa, double entry. You couldn't get a longer one as your first visa I understood, though later I've met a rider or two who did. The problem was the moment it was issued you had three months to use it, once you did days kept counting even if you weren't in the country. The moment I got it in March the clock started ticking. Anyone going there I recommend a 6 month business visa at least.

"Disinfecting" the bike, to try and keep any type of invasive species off the island I think. For example when you ship a motorcycle to Australia or New Zealand you have to make sure it's really clean otherwise they charge you for a decontamination cleaning session. Even in Australia itself you can't travel with fruit between western states because of fruit flies.

Covid ruined my trip around the world on a harley and now the conflict in Ukraine makes it hard as an American to travel Russia. My dream is NOT dead but how bad can it be to travel Russia in 2023 as a Cuban/American? I was planning on an Air canada flying my bike to Vancouver to get back to N. America. Love the vids bruh....gives me inspiration that fuels my dreams!
