I've been using milanote for a while and really appreciate their platform. I used it when I moved into my new apartment and to plan out a mood board of how I wanted my apartment to look and also plan out the logistics and budget. Really helped a lot!

Yes the email addresses are fake, that doesn't mean the messages are. This is a really important part of internet literacy, to know that some information may be faked by the *sender* and not the receiver.
i mean, it's true that sock has every right to block people that she doesn't want accessing her page and she doesn't have to give or even have a "real" justification for that. except literally every action she took after this (such accusing other dyers of harassing her w/o proof) was not cool.

There is an insanely specific dynamic that so many of these stories seem to share. Person 1: makes a wild, borderline delusional, claim of copying/trademark, etc. Person 2: Has an emotional reaction typically associated with tsunamis and bridge collapses
I agree with this observation and there IS a reason from the trauma-informed psychotherapy perspective! Any reaction that is out of proportion to the trigger usually points to something from the person's past. Just wanted to say this bc Emma's videos hit the sweet spot for me on the Venn diagram for drama and pretty yarn things, it's therapising and crafting dopamine!

As someone else said, it seems like paranoia. Clearly the hate mail was getting to her, and she must've become scared. That fear can easily manifest into paranoia if you are prone to having bouts of paranoia (predisposition, schizophrenia, trauma, etc.). I honestly feel bad for her. That being said, what she did wasn't acceptable. But I can understand her pain. It's scary to think the whole world is against you. I feel like that everyday. Do I take that out on everyone and blame them for every little thing? No. Because that is irresponsible. I think she needs to find faith in herself and perhaps go to therapy so she can unlearn paranoid thinking patterns... and definitely spend less time on social media, or get a social media manager.
Not even necessarily paranoia - being an immigrant in America isn’t necessarily easy, especially if you’re from a background that is often harassed in America. If she’s accustomed to harassment, feeling like people are out to get her, (in her real life), it could be an easy leap to apply that thinking to online stuff.
It seems like a cultural and principle difference. If she keeps coping bs for bloking ppl and working her account how she is most comfortable that has not effect of other ppl apart from it's not seen as normal, then actually gets death threats . . . Not surprising she cracked and came to conclusions not right but also logical result.

as someone who spent formative online years on tumblr, blocking is just a thing you do. it curates your online experience better, it clears accounts you dont want to see for any reason, etc. while some of socks story doesnt quite add up, genuinely crying over being blocked by someone is insane. its not really that deep ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't even know what she's talking about when it comes to university; I've taken multiple college level art classes and in every single one we get given a lot of historical and modern examples of the kind of artwork/style/techniques/themes, and then for most projects we have multiple check in points with other people hwhere we explain our concepts and share our sketches for feedback, and then after we actually finish, we all put up our artwork for constructive criticism from the rest of the class!

She said she did not want her work to be influenced by seeing other yarn dyers' work. As an artist myself, that is understandable to an extent. We are all influenced by many things we see and have seen. No harm in attempting to limit the influx of information and images inundating us via social media as it appears Sock was attempting to do here. In any case, it seems that sll parties involved are emotionally unbalanced and are living too much online.
I'm really sorry but I have to disagree on one point. I was for many years a Clay Artist that spent much time deeloping designs and glazes. There was lots of math and trial and error involved. This became for a time my only source of income so imagine my horror of seeing 3 of my best designs copied and being sold at the same craft sale I was attending for less and using a similar glaze. I had no apprentices and of course there is no patent on ideas, it's just really sleezy to copy and pretend it's your own. I now dye yarn, my pottery days are behind me and I have fun coming up with colors. We all have access to the same acid dyes, KoolAid and food coloring so fun we can have.
People send death threats for not shipping the same characters as them, for just being the voice for characters, and if you just have the wrong face in the background of someone's video. Someone would definitely send death threats over yarn.
ngl Im kind of over creators complaining about death threats that aren't explicitly "I'm gonna get you at x with y". I'm sure its exhausting and wears on you, but atp its an occupational risk like crossing guards being hit by cars or chefs being burned. Idiot kids send death threats literally constantly

Like you're not an investigative journalist or a witness against the mafia or sth. you're not out here checking under your car for bombs over some hobby drama. also I have a strong suspicion some of these people are conflating death threats and ill wishes, like they'll get a message saying "I hope you get run over by a bus" or sth and call it a death threat.
If you want drama, the fountain pen/ ink community has big drama constantly. They jump to HUGE conclusions and they have extremely long arms from all the reaching they do 😂
@@zr3933 apologizing now for the long comment lol. god i forgot the brand's name, but there was this extremely coveted and popular purple ink that was lim edition back in like 2016; people would resell bottles of it for hundreds of dollars. basically what happened is that recently, the company was planning to release another purple ink and it had a different name. people were wondering if it would be like the old one and the company was extremely unclear about whether or not the two inks had the same formulation; there were also listings made for the new ink using the old ink's name, which confused everything even more. turns out, the two inks were completely different formulations and had different sheens (old one had a gold one which is what made it special because purple ink usually has a green sheen i think??). i only saw one tiktok, so idk the conclusion to all of this XD
Do these people not realize that internet trolls exist? Anyone will send you a threat for no reason at any time. I'm not a creator and even I've received a random threat or two.
I know people can get hurt feelings about being blocked. But I recommend it, it curates your online experience. A dumb reason I blocked someone on another site is because they made content with two tags I like but didn't like together & there was no way to filter it out. Honestly I prefer a hard block rather than a soft one. I will assume the best (glitch or website) and refollow.

I know semi-recently Firefox made it where some could work on the mobile Firefox app but I was giving it a bit to settle down. I wouldn't trust onsite/app filtering because it's getting more common to pay to get around filters (Tumblr and Twitter)

I think it sounds like SO is a little sensitive to being "copied" because of how she was taught in art school which I can understand. But I find it weird af she keeps saying shes getting death threat without proof but then doesn't understand when she basically posts slander against other artists.
To be fair, if the person she accused of copying her yarn really was a customer of hers then went on to release two almost identical yarns to the ones she makes then it's entirely fair for her to assume that person copied her which seems to be the case here. I do think it's a little much to not even be willing to tell people what brand of dye she uses, but she's not exactly under any obligation to share that kind of info
@@cream476 it's definitely sketchy but it's not illegal and she has every right to block whoever she wants but my issue is potentially spreading lies about death threats because that's a serious accusation against another person without any proof or evidence to back that up. It's sad to me that her school basically taught her to isolate against other potential "influences" because to me knitting, crochet, and beautiful yarns are a work of art that inspires me to try different things. Exact copies of her yarn suck and it could negatively impact her business but potentially lying about a huge accusation puts me more off buying from her. I assume she probably just uses regular acid dyes like most other indie dyers. I'm sure repeatedly getting about her techniques, etc is very annoying especially when there are already creators out there that put out tutorials n stuff to share that information. Chemknits is the first one I think of that has some very interesting videos about dying techniques but I only do super small scale dying very infrequently. I love to buy hand dyed yarns for special projects when I can but obviously spending $20-35+ on a single skein isn't always feasible for every project.
@@majorgeneralmalaisewhen I was doing art classes at Uni, I was told to ONLY look at historical art by at least two of my lecturers, but I also had a new age-y academic who was the opposite and encouraged us to share our Instagram handles with each other. I know one teacher was very pro isolation and felt that "art comes from within" and our rationales had to be very wishy washy and avoid mentioning any artists specifically or he'd mark us down for a lack of originality. If she just happened to be more exposed to teachers like that then I understand why she's come away thinking the way she has. It may just seem foreign to many of us who spend a lot of time with fiber art because it is a very community focused medium.

I was wondering why Fairy Witchcraft looked so familiar.... I literally ordered this very colorway from sock obsession back in 2017. Also considering sock's views on following other artists, to each their own, if that's her creative process so be it. Them posting on being blocked kinda feels icky and like it was content farming that just quickly spiraled into the mess it is now. If you really wanted to know, then why not reach out personally to other dyers? Why post it so publicly on your business page? Also if you're blocked... who cares? Why is it such a big deal if someone wants to protect their own space and create their own boundaries?
So she does seem like a bit of a weirdo isolationist, but also, why are these other women getting so DRAMATIC about being blocked by her and banging on about it? She doesn’t want to join your community, she wants to do things by herself, who cares? Take the hint. How does it impact these others? Because it's a great way to hide a scam and scams are unfortunately common in indie dyeing. If Sock had low quality products or wasn't sending things out or was using other people's product photos or etc. etc. the easiest way to hide that would be to block everyone who would know enough to call you out. TBH I doubt Sock has done anything like that, but those things have happened in the indie dye community, so a lot of indie dyers and yarners are touchy about that kind of behavior!

About the “proffesion help?” At about 12:00 Sock mentioned in their comment that they’d been called mentally ill in their dm’s which imo makes it clear they interpreted what was said correctly and simply made a spelling mistake while questioning the statement
DK about Instagram but in my early days on twitter (which is now such a 💩show), I got blocked by a really good person because of an automatic blocker. Since I was new, my account was suspect (because of so many trolls). Automatic blockers on twitter did a kind of wholesale blocking. i did contact that person through someone else and she reinstated me.

And then the crocodile tears, weird claim that they could never be mean because she's a mother (!?), and spending 10 MINUTES crying about the claims against her to their mutual followers = 🚩🚩

I think it comes down to the accusations. If she's saying these people are trying to harm her business, they are able to defend themselves. The blocking is secondary.

Where I'm from, people get SO hung up on speaking English "correctly" that it actually really hinders a lot of learners' confidence. As a result, they pretty much never speak in English, at least not to other people, which is also a hindrance to their learning efforts.

I don’t think Sock should have to disclose her dying recipe. That’s not a trade secret, it’s her own experimentation and preferences. She should profit off her honed-in skills. Nobody is obligated to give another chef their grandma’s secret recipe. With blocking people just cause they’re indie dyers, I feel like that’s limiting ur market, which is never good for a biz. I say let em buy and try. I’d be counting their cash till they figure their own thing out. However, like ya said, she can block without reason and to ask why is kinda weird. It’s not bullying, but it’s real pushy and intimidating. Idk if I believe end threats were or weren’t sent. I don't think that failing to have the most logical response to a stressful situation means it's fake. You have to remember that the blocking itself came about because of unreasonable behavior--repeated internet comments asking for the same thing the creator had already said no to--so why would you expect that person to have responded reasonably? Usually these threats aren't from someone who genuinely intends to personally injure you? But they're still deliberately sending those comments to make you feel hurt and afraid! And it's hard to just dismiss them as "well it's the internet" when it's happening to you.
Idk. I went to a natural dyes workshop 4/5 years ago. Two of the dyes were completely new to me but I thought I knew the other really well. All of the dye recipes were updated to take account of water conservation, either in the dyeing process or the cultivation of the plants. Some traditional dye processes have problematic waste products. Some of the dyes that I would have used 10, 12 years ago wouldn't meet fair trade standards today. I would have thought that Dyer's would take the opportunity to demonstrate that they were keeping up with the changes. Of course that's not quite the same as handing over your recipe. The problem with any craft is that there's a right and wrong way to ask for information. The polite way would be to ask for any recommendations on courses or teachers.
Not to be pedantic, I just think it is important for people to understand this term, but I think "own experimentation and preferences," and "grandma's secret recipe" are pretty much the archetypes of trade secrets. The dye compositions are absolutely trade secrets.
It was a customer of hers who wasn't a dyer at the time they bought the yarn. For her to know that it was them who bought the yarn they most likely told her their social media at some point. So maybe she just got curious if they'd posted about it or what they'd made with and when she pulled up their page to check she saw that they's started selling copies of her yarn. That or maybe someone else noticed it and sent the post to her. That kind of thing happens online a lot. Sometimes it's a fan just trying to be helpful and sometimes it's just someone who's found an easy target to stir up drama
not defending sock here, but as someone with who has seen friends on instagram get copied - usually, someone connected to the person sees the copied content, and alerts them. they usually don’t find it themselves but rather find out through someone else.
I’m very much a community over competition person, I’m really grateful to be a part of a lovely fibre art designer group so I know there’s good in the community. That said, we literally have a discussion tab on art theft because there are bad actors in these communities as well who do steal work. There’s groups dedicated to disseminating paid patterns for free, a designer just had to change a password on an ongoing stitch-a-long after they found the patterns being passed around by a “designer” for free, someone was stealing *free* patterns from a different SAL and then charging people for them, other “designers” will copy popular patterns and then sell them under their own name, I’ve seen it all. I’m kind of iffy on this one, I feel like maybe they have had some bad experiences that made them paranoid which is why they did certain actions. If they had just been blocking people to set boundaries that made them comfortable I don’t think that would have been inherently wrong but I understand why others might have seen it as odd. The escalation and blame game is not okay though, and I agree the overall sentiment is they’re both wrong and no one really proved anything.

When my kids were in elementary school, there was a group of mothers who were always involved in some kind of drama-heavy relationship with each other. I got caught in the middle once because I was unaware that one mother was another mother's enemy (at the time) and apparently I said the wrong thing to one of them. I had to field angry phone calls from friends of the two mothers. A very sensible friend of mine said "they just don't have enough to do." That put it all in perspective and I just stayed away from that group from then on. But I still shudder when I think of them. Women in their thirties acting like middle school mean girls.
1. Being hurt about being blocked and calling out someone who blocked me is stupid. 2. Not posting (potential) proof of death threats etc. is advised if you want to take legal actions against someone who sends them.
I was in art school and in university did art bachlores. Art school was fine arts based so live drawing, painting, graphics, ceramics, sculpture and etc. First day of each lesson we were encouraged to once in awhile stand up from our seats and go around the class to see how others are solving certain issues. Not to mention literal master studies there you were told to copy a painting. I have a graphic design degree. Since a communication based artistic form maybe it's different, but we were heavily encouraged to stay in studio after lectured ended to have more chances to bounce off ideas with people from different years and other professors. So I am quite confused what sort of art school even encouraged that sort of shut off from others lol.
Yes. Same with a Masters. You learn the vocabulary to describe your own work by looking at other people's work. Mostly you look at the intention behind the work and whether it was effectively realised. All art is communicative. The whole misunderstood genius thing is heavily overated.
I understand Sock’s mindset about isolating because I used to be that person. My originality and creativity was frequently dismissed or “you saw and copied this” that I hadn’t seen. I (hope that I) have grown somewhat since and understand that there are very few truly original things in the world, and even then, six people will think of it at once. I also am slightly annoyed by the woman’s crying over being blocked and saying “as a mother I would never”.... I’ve met so many mothers who would never threaten someone else’s children, who did exactly that, so the tears strike me as an overreaction and a manipulative behaviour. I really liked this video! isaw some of it unfold and I think overall everyone sucks. Sock shouldn't have claimed that it was other dyers/Treehouse were threatening her but Treehouse should've just moved on from being blocked instead of making a public statement. If someone wants you to leave them alone, leave them alone! if you HAVE to discuss it reach out to some of your friends in the space privately. I am also suspicious of Treehouse bc as far as I know, there isnt any proof of Sock reaching out to her followers, right? so it all seems that everyone needs to just move on cause 90% of the situation was never that serious (barring the anonymous threats obviously)

I've taken on line courses on yarn dyeing, and it's really difficult to copy another dyers colour way even though the dye and bare yarn brands are disclosed. It's not that hard to learn dyeing.

I can see not wanting to look at other's work. seeing other people's work can sometimes be anxiety inducing with feelings of comparison, not-good-enough-ness and insecurity. I'd imagine sock does have to spend a lot of time on IG to do business things and inevitably the algorithm would show her other indie dyers so to not see them and protect her own mental health, she'd have to block them.

yeah, those feelings are normal. what sock has going on is absurd and extreme. the one damn thing artists have in the modern world IS community. but i don’t buy it, because how was she able to learn? who did she initially get inspiration from? other artists 🙃

Of course not every person wants to do that, but shoutout to those who make tutorials and give out tips for us to learn, especially for free😋
additionally the yarn/textile community LOVES to accuse others of stealing with no evidence (or "stealing" a basic idea/pattern that has been around since like the 16th century), but there's also rampant idea theft as well. i can totally understand her preemptive blocking of other creators. treehouse and co were weird for posting about it.... some people take social media way too seriously. being blocked is not the end of the world

Why is it that for handcraft-related businesses, there’s this expectation that business owners/creatives should be everyone’s friends? I know nothing about the indie dyeing scene but I’ve seen this elsewhere in female-dominant handcraft milieux - if you just want to do your thing, run your business, and protect what you create from being stolen, it really pisses off some types of people that you aren’t “generous.” Then these people whine and cry that “it’s not fair.” I suspect Sock is simply protecting her proprietary business secrets from all the freeloaders who just want to be handed a ticket to starting their own businesses without putting in the work. My background is with knitting - 3 decades ago I observed that the best designers rose above all the petty shit and just kept on creating because that was their strength. They did their best to protect their brand and fostered loyalty by staying on track and letting the sleazy operators show themselves up as time went by. Just to be clear: I only know about any of this, from watching this video. I have zero skin in this game and have no idea who the main characters are except as described. And I love your videos Emma!
I mean, it kinda sounds like sockobsession got traumatized about copying and plagiarism in art school and now has this really weird complex about it, to the point where she feels anxiety about any artist looking at her work or HERSELF looking other artists' work. like we just sort of on the surface think "that's insane that's not how art works" but actually THINK ABOUT IT for a moment. we know that's now how art works and yet she sounds so paranoid about it because she doesn't want people copying her but also she seems scared of HERSELF being perceived of copying to the point where she doesn't even want to LOOK at art! that's horrifying! which for sure would be something addressed in a therapy setting. it doesn't excuse her ~allegedly creating threats against her to justify blocking people and messaging their followers and defaming them, it just explains the behavior. remember that everyone: explanation is not an excuse.
Honestly, where would we be without you, Emma? When one hears rumblings of drama it can be so hard to understand what's happening, and your research is always impeccable. You are a real gift to this community. (And FWIW, I agree with your final conclusions.)

I totally agree that both sides have made this situation go too far. I think sock is totally free to block whoever they want even if i dont agree with their reasoning. I think that by trying to uphold the "positive vibes" that indie dye-rs try to have, the blocked dye-rs ended up not having positive vibes at all, even if unintentional. A very interesting situation that seemingly keeps on repeating forever in the fiber arts community in some form.
The phrase you're looking for is "toxic positivity", haha. And yes - it's exactly what I felt while watching this. The "bless your heart, hope you get professional help" type comment was particularly gross to me, I couldn't understand why people thought the comment was "nice".
It’s really sad to see this in the indie dyer community. I get super excited when people reach out to me asking how to start dyeing yarn. I love to share information! I think a lot of the time it’s people’s mindset. If you are looking for people “copying” you, you will find “evidence” of it happening.
I have seen similar drama from this sock person on Witchblr before. It's always wild what drama from other random communities makes their way through at some point or another XD
Just wanna say you are my current favorite channel especially for “drama” and commentary content, I really enjoy your writing and delivery style, I love your choice of topics, I like that I get to engage with juicy internet “drama” that feels impactful (crafting is very important!) but also low stakes, I get to relax and just enjoy, I get very excited when you upload, even as someone who doesn’t crochet or knit myself, but I love putting your videos on while I draw and work on my comic :)
You missed the drama around Wizard yarns. They had a Facebook page before Sock accused them of “copying” her. On their Facebook page, you could see they’d been dying that purple yarn for years before sock. Sock sent her followers after a small Indy dyer to the point they had to make their instagram private and their Facebook page went down.
This youtuber and many of the commenters seem to be fans of sock and are totally biased Look at them accusing the one girl of crying about being blocked when she was obviously crying because sock is literally defaming her to tree's customers and threatening her livelihood
A lot of things don't confirm emails before letting you use them, partly because for smaller websites, the confirmation emails themselves will often be treated as spam. Even in your email, if you look in your spam folder, you have to understand that many of those messages did NOT come from the address they show as their "from" field! It is possible that Sock faked these, but I wouldn't say it's likely. A distressing number of people actually react like this when blocked or banned from things.
I ran across your channel by accident. Started at book tube, wandered to crochet community, and now this channel with a ton of craft drama. It's like a True Crime channel without all the deaths!
in comedy, it’s actually a common thing for comedians to not listen to/watch other comedian’s material so that they don’t like accidentally plagiarize jokes, just like the information maybe seeps into your brain and later you come up with something without realizing you actually got it from somewhere else. So i can see her thought process of not wanting to follow a bunch of other dyers and i don’t really understand why the other people got so upset over that, as for the threats and stuff like that’s just wild lol
So much shit and drama in any art/craft/clothing/thrift community would be null if only people adapted the motto “you eat, I eat, we all eat” meaning there’s enough to go around, we build each other up, we support and we recommend others. There’s buyers for EVERYTHING.
That's easy to say until you have other people ripoff your designs that took hundreds of hours to come up with and stealing your customers. I don't think people understand what it's like to make a living off your own creative work. If they did they wouldn't take it so lightly.
15:19 Sounds like an awful way to be taught art. I'm studying Fine Art in university and we've always been implored to be inspired by other artists or get inspiration from other artists. During our time here, we've also had well-established artists come speak with us regarding our own works, giving us pointers as well as historical and contemporary artists to take inspiration from. Sure, we have faux walls up but we can always see what everyone's doing and it's evident that we're all making drastically different pieces to exhibit, even if one of our lecturers gives us the same artist to look at. One of our exercises in our fourth semester was exactly that, and no two images were the same even if the same artwork was assigned. Not to mention, we're all subconsciously inspired by things in our life and nothing is ever truly original. It's unrealistic to strive for pure originality because the fact is that if it exists, its been done before.
I will say I have been following and buying from Sock Obessions Yarns for years, I think close to when they first started. Don’t even remember how I came across them, but in all these years they have only posted yarn sales from what I saw. This is the first drama that I have seen them be publicly involved in, and I did respect her position because of the proof she showed with regards to the emails and it wasn’t something I saw her frequently engaging in. It seems like she has reached a boiling point and felt like it was affecting her business in some way. Thank you for your coverage of this and I agree with your take overall. Very well articulated!
It's super easy in art school to convince yourself that every other artist is out to get you, Your revolutionary Idea, and WILL take all your success you've convinced yourself is in this idea. I didn't look at other artists work because I didn't want to muddle my own idea. They have there already, The ideas Done, there's no reason I Shouldn't just think about my own practice, and Work. I think if you convince yourself of this for so long, and not be able to take a step back it can almost turn into this sort of madness. Ive grown so angry like this about others "getting there before me", having success with an idea you also had. it's like major FOMO. Art school drilled into my brain the only artists, are the ones that are famous, and are remembered. Anything less than that, isn't worth striving for.
Everyone should just chill... like... why is it a big deal when someone blocks people because they feel spammed or they personally think they shouldn't see other artists creations? Like... what is it to other people if Sock thinks that way? Everyone can think about this what they want but that's no reason to hate her for this? Like Emma said, yeah, you can be upset about being blocked, but... at the end of the day it's not the end of the world, live your life and go on. I am a (very) small indie dyer, and I just checked and am not blocked by Sock! I love following other dyers on IG. I'm never looking to copy colorways other dyers are doing though. I just like yarn.
Hi Ashton, It's Tammy. Lauren mentors a lot of new dyers. She has a heart to help new indie dyers and shares tips and tricks to help them be successful. I believe one of Lauren's new indie dyer friends is one who was targeted by SO. I believe Lauren's motive was one of protection. Lauren ended up being THE target when coming to her friends defense. Lauren was notified by a couple of her customers that SO was contacting them individually telling them what a horrible person Lauren was and that Lauren was issuing death threats. That's when Lauren felt the need to make the video explaining herself. Lauren is a huge introvert and hides from controversy. I know she wishes this would all go away. I had no idea who SO was until this happened to Lauren. I'm blocked by SO too. Somehow I feel as if I did something wrong and not allowed to be a fan of SO. I'm so happy that other dyers that I look up to and am a fan of don't feel the need to block other indie dyers. I love Chelsea Yarns and Skein Cocaine. I'm a huge fan. I love yarn too. I'm a yarn shopper myself.
Suggestion for some more drama! It isn't fiber or "crafting" per se, but it is still a creative space. NANOWRIMO had some drama this past November that led to massive site changes and staffing changes, and some very vague apology emails and FAQs and I'd love your take on it.

Sock's reasoning for blocking people is irrelevant but, I think her logic is sound and not as paranoid as one might think. As a graphic designer, I don't follow other graphic designers, I follow other types of artists. If your feed is mostly people who do the same thing you do, you *will* end up copying someone whether you realize it or not. Obviously I can't help but see graphic design, it's literally everywhere, and I'm sure Sock sees plenty of dyed yarn in the world too. Like she said, overlap (and copying) are inevitable. But, on this very channel, we have seen multiple cases of people getting into long spats about someone copying them and oftentimes their "proof" is that the accused follows the accuser and has maybe even liked some posts. Is she paranoid about getting involved in that type of drama when she found herself in drama for just having some people blocked? I really think Sock just wants to create independently and remove people as she sees fit. Maybe Treehouse took it personally and thought the reason provided was BS, but I think she needs to focus on why having access to Sock is so important to her in the first place. Both of them should not accuse anyone of anything without definitive proof, but no one would need it if Treehouse could just get over the fact that she's blocked.
For the record, I have no stake in the fiber arts community, that is not my medium of choice. But every time you release a new video on the fiber arts community I click instantly. You explain everything so perfectly in a way you can be an outsider looking in and still appreciate the story.
As a creative I understand what Sock is saying about not wanting to be influenced by others work. Like you said she has every right to block whoever she wants. It's the fact that people got so obsessive about being blocked that's so weird. I mean it's not like a friend or family blocking them, it was someone online that they didn't know lol that's such a bazar reaction.
Whenever em drops a video I have to wait until I'm ready to work on my big project, then I sit down with my yarn and my tea and thoroughly enjoy myself! I'll never be the first one watching their videos but I am still their biggest fan in my heart!!

Yes the email addresses are fake, that doesn't mean the messages are. This is a really important part of internet literacy, to know that some information may be faked by the *sender* and not the receiver.

There is an insanely specific dynamic that so many of these stories seem to share. Person 1: makes a wild, borderline delusional, claim of copying/trademark, etc. Person 2: Has an emotional reaction typically associated with tsunamis and bridge collapses
I agree with this observation and there IS a reason from the trauma-informed psychotherapy perspective! Any reaction that is out of proportion to the trigger usually points to something from the person's past. Just wanted to say this bc Emma's videos hit the sweet spot for me on the Venn diagram for drama and pretty yarn things, it's therapising and crafting dopamine!

As someone else said, it seems like paranoia. Clearly the hate mail was getting to her, and she must've become scared. That fear can easily manifest into paranoia if you are prone to having bouts of paranoia (predisposition, schizophrenia, trauma, etc.). I honestly feel bad for her.
That being said, what she did wasn't acceptable. But I can understand her pain. It's scary to think the whole world is against you. I feel like that everyday. Do I take that out on everyone and blame them for every little thing? No. Because that is irresponsible. I think she needs to find faith in herself and perhaps go to therapy so she can unlearn paranoid thinking patterns... and definitely spend less time on social media, or get a social media manager.
Not even necessarily paranoia - being an immigrant in America isn’t necessarily easy, especially if you’re from a background that is often harassed in America. If she’s accustomed to harassment, feeling like people are out to get her, (in her real life), it could be an easy leap to apply that thinking to online stuff.

as someone who spent formative online years on tumblr, blocking is just a thing you do. it curates your online experience better, it clears accounts you dont want to see for any reason, etc. while some of socks story doesnt quite add up, genuinely crying over being blocked by someone is insane. its not really that deep ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This reminds me of a kid in HS who told me he didn’t like to read books in case it influenced his own writing style 😂😂😂 he got a quill tattoo when he turned 18 and in our creative writing class together he hated any assignment that asked us to copy a style of a poem or be inspired by a poem, like dude, sonnets are not just Shakespeare’s thing lol

I don't even know what she's talking about when it comes to university; I've taken multiple college level art classes and in every single one we get given a lot of historical and modern examples of the kind of artwork/style/techniques/themes, and then for most projects we have multiple check in points with other people hwhere we explain our concepts and share our sketches for feedback, and then after we actually finish, we all put up our artwork for constructive criticism from the rest of the class!

We are all influenced by many things we see and have seen. No harm in attempting to limit the influx of information and images inundating us via social media as it appears Sock was attempting to do here.
In any case, it seems that sll parties involved are emotionally unbalanced and are living too much online.
I'm really sorry but I have to disagree on one point. I was for many years a Clay Artist that spent much time deeloping designs and glazes. There was lots of math and trial and error involved. This became for a time my only source of income so imagine my horror of seeing 3 of my best designs copied and being sold at the same craft sale I was attending for less and using a similar glaze.
I had no apprentices and of course there is no patent on ideas, it's just really sleezy to copy and pretend it's your own.
I now dye yarn, my pottery days are behind me and I have fun coming up with colors. We all have access to the same acid dyes, KoolAid and food coloring so fun we can have.
People send death threats for not shipping the same characters as them, for just being the voice for characters, and if you just have the wrong face in the background of someone's video. Someone would definitely send death threats over yarn.
She'll post screenshots of everything but these threats though. Just because people would doesn't mean it did happen
ngl Im kind of over creators complaining about death threats that aren't explicitly "I'm gonna get you at x with y". I'm sure its exhausting and wears on you, but atp its an occupational risk like crossing guards being hit by cars or chefs being burned. Idiot kids send death threats literally constantly

If you want drama, the fountain pen/ ink community has big drama constantly. They jump to HUGE conclusions and they have extremely long arms from all the reaching they do 😂

god i forgot the brand's name, but there was this extremely coveted and popular purple ink that was lim edition back in like 2016; people would resell bottles of it for hundreds of dollars.
basically what happened is that recently, the company was planning to release another purple ink and it had a different name. people were wondering if it would be like the old one and the company was extremely unclear about whether or not the two inks had the same formulation; there were also listings made for the new ink using the old ink's name, which confused everything even more.
turns out, the two inks were completely different formulations and had different sheens (old one had a gold one which is what made it special because purple ink usually has a green sheen i think??). i only saw one tiktok, so idk the conclusion to all of this XD

Do these people not realize that internet trolls exist? Anyone will send you a threat for no reason at any time. I'm not a creator and even I've received a random threat or two.
I know people can get hurt feelings about being blocked. But I recommend it, it curates your online experience. A dumb reason I blocked someone on another site is because they made content with two tags I like but didn't like together & there was no way to filter it out.
Honestly I prefer a hard block rather than a soft one. I will assume the best (glitch or website) and refollow.

I know semi-recently Firefox made it where some could work on the mobile Firefox app but I was giving it a bit to settle down. I think it sounds like SO is a little sensitive to being "copied" because of how she was taught in art school which I can understand.
But I find it weird af she keeps saying shes getting death threat without proof but then doesn't understand when she basically posts slander against other artists.
To be fair, if the person she accused of copying her yarn really was a customer of hers then went on to release two almost identical yarns to the ones she makes then it's entirely fair for her to assume that person copied her which seems to be the case here.
I do think it's a little much to not even be willing to tell people what brand of dye she uses, but she's not exactly under any obligation to share that kind of info

@@cream476 it's definitely sketchy but it's not illegal and she has every right to block whoever she wants but my issue is potentially spreading lies about death threats because that's a serious accusation against another person without any proof or evidence to back that up.
It's sad to me that her school basically taught her to isolate against other potential "influences" because to me knitting, crochet, and beautiful yarns are a work of art that inspires me to try different things.
Exact copies of her yarn suck and it could negatively impact her business but potentially lying about a huge accusation puts me more off buying from her. I assume she probably just uses regular acid dyes like most other indie dyers. I'm sure repeatedly getting about her techniques, etc is very annoying especially when there are already creators out there that put out tutorials n stuff to share that information.
Chemknits is the first one I think of that has some very interesting videos about dying techniques but I only do super small scale dying very infrequently.
I love to buy hand dyed yarns for special projects when I can but obviously spending $20-35+ on a single skein isn't always feasible for every project.
@@majorgeneralmalaisewhen I was doing art classes at Uni, I was told to ONLY look at historical art by at least two of my lecturers, but I also had a new age-y academic who was the opposite and encouraged us to share our Instagram handles with each other. I know one teacher was very pro isolation and felt that "art comes from within" and our rationales had to be very wishy washy and avoid mentioning any artists specifically or he'd mark us down for a lack of originality.
If she just happened to be more exposed to teachers like that then I understand why she's come away thinking the way she has. It may just seem foreign to many of us who spend a lot of time with fiber art because it is a very community focused medium.

I was wondering why Fairy Witchcraft looked so familiar.... I literally ordered this very colorway from sock obsession back in 2017. Also considering sock's views on following other artists, to each their own, if that's her creative process so be it. Them posting on being blocked kinda feels icky and like it was content farming that just quickly spiraled into the mess it is now. If you really wanted to know, then why not reach out personally to other dyers? Why post it so publicly on your business page? Also if you're blocked... who cares? Why is it such a big deal if someone wants to protect their own space and create their own boundaries?
So she does seem like a bit of a weirdo isolationist, but also, why are these other women getting so DRAMATIC about being blocked by her and banging on about it? She doesn’t want to join your community, she wants to do things by herself, who cares? Take the hint. How does it impact these others? Because it's a great way to hide a scam and scams are unfortunately common in indie dyeing. If Sock had low quality products or wasn't sending things out or was using other people's product photos or etc. etc. the easiest way to hide that would be to block everyone who would know enough to call you out. TBH I doubt Sock has done anything like that, but those things have happened in the indie dye community, so a lot of indie dyers and yarners are touchy about that kind of behavior!

DK about Instagram but in my early days on twitter (which is now such a 💩show), I got blocked by a really good person because of an automatic blocker. Since I was new, my account was suspect (because of so many trolls). Automatic blockers on twitter did a kind of wholesale blocking. i did contact that person through someone else and she reinstated me.

I think it comes down to the accusations. If she's saying these people are trying to harm her business, they are able to defend themselves. The blocking is secondary.

I've had an equally hard time trying to understand some regional British accents as a couple of ESL people.
Where I'm from, people get SO hung up on speaking English "correctly" that it actually really hinders a lot of learners' confidence.

I don't think that failing to have the most logical response to a stressful situation means it's fake. You have to remember that the blocking itself came about because of unreasonable behavior--repeated internet comments asking for the same thing the creator had already said no to--so why would you expect that person to have responded reasonably?
Usually these threats aren't from someone who genuinely intends to personally injure you? But they're still deliberately sending those comments to make you feel hurt and afraid! And it's hard to just dismiss them as "well it's the internet" when it's happening to you.
Idk. I went to a natural dyes workshop 4/5 years ago. Two of the dyes were completely new to me but I thought I knew the other really well. All of the dye recipes were updated to take account of water conservation, either in the dyeing process or the cultivation of the plants. Some traditional dye processes have problematic waste products. Some of the dyes that I would have used 10, 12 years ago wouldn't meet fair trade standards today. I would have thought that Dyer's would take the opportunity to demonstrate that they were keeping up with the changes. Of course that's not quite the same as handing over your recipe. The problem with any craft is that there's a right and wrong way to ask for information. The polite way would be to ask for any recommendations on courses or teachers.
Correction: you'd be counting dollars from one order, while your customers count EVEN MORE!
Not to be pedantic, I just think it is important for people to understand this term, but I think "own experimentation and preferences," and "grandma's secret recipe" are pretty much the archetypes of trade secrets. The dye compositions are absolutely trade secrets.

It was a customer of hers who wasn't a dyer at the time they bought the yarn. For her to know that it was them who bought the yarn they most likely told her their social media at some point. So maybe she just got curious if they'd posted about it or what they'd made with and when she pulled up their page to check she saw that they's started selling copies of her yarn.
That or maybe someone else noticed it and sent the post to her. That kind of thing happens online a lot. Sometimes it's a fan just trying to be helpful and sometimes it's just someone who's found an easy target to stir up drama
not defending sock here, but as someone with who has seen friends on instagram get copied - usually, someone connected to the person sees the copied content, and alerts them. they usually don’t find it themselves but rather find out through someone else.
I’m very much a community over competition person, I’m really grateful to be a part of a lovely fibre art designer group so I know there’s good in the community. That said, we literally have a discussion tab on art theft because there are bad actors in these communities as well who do steal work. There’s groups dedicated to disseminating paid patterns for free, a designer just had to change a password on an ongoing stitch-a-long after they found the patterns being passed around by a “designer” for free, someone was stealing *free* patterns from a different SAL and then charging people for them, other “designers” will copy popular patterns and then sell them under their own name, I’ve seen it all. I’m kind of iffy on this one, I feel like maybe they have had some bad experiences that made them paranoid which is why they did certain actions. If they had just been blocking people to set boundaries that made them comfortable I don’t think that would have been inherently wrong but I understand why others might have seen it as odd. The escalation and blame game is not okay though, and I agree the overall sentiment is they’re both wrong and no one really proved anything.

When my kids were in elementary school, there was a group of mothers who were always involved in some kind of drama-heavy relationship with each other. I got caught in the middle once because I was unaware that one mother was another mother's enemy (at the time) and apparently I said the wrong thing to one of them. I had to field angry phone calls from friends of the two mothers. A very sensible friend of mine said "they just don't have enough to do." That put it all in perspective and I just stayed away from that group from then on. But I still shudder when I think of them. Women in their thirties acting like middle school mean girls.
1. Being hurt about being blocked and calling out someone who blocked me is stupid.
2. Not posting (potential) proof of death threats etc. is advised if you want to take legal actions against someone who sends them.

I was in art school and in university did art bachlores. Art school was fine arts based so live drawing, painting, graphics, ceramics, sculpture and etc. First day of each lesson we were encouraged to once in awhile stand up from our seats and go around the class to see how others are solving certain issues. Not to mention literal master studies there you were told to copy a painting.
I have a graphic design degree. Since a communication based artistic form maybe it's different, but we were heavily encouraged to stay in studio after lectured ended to have more chances to bounce off ideas with people from different years and other professors.
So I am quite confused what sort of art school even encouraged that sort of shut off from others lol.
Yes. Same with a Masters. You learn the vocabulary to describe your own work by looking at other people's work. Mostly you look at the intention behind the work and whether it was effectively realised. All art is communicative. The whole misunderstood genius thing is heavily overated.
I understand Sock’s mindset about isolating because I used to be that person. My originality and creativity was frequently dismissed or “you saw and copied this” that I hadn’t seen. I (hope that I) have grown somewhat since and understand that there are very few truly original things in the world, and even then, six people will think of it at once. I also am slightly annoyed by the woman’s crying over being blocked and saying “as a mother I would never”.... I’ve met so many mothers who would never threaten someone else’s children, who did exactly that, so the tears strike me as an overreaction and a manipulative behaviour. I think your assessment of the situation was about as correct as an opinion on drama can be from a third person perspective without every piece of private conversation. Also thank you Jaida!

Sock shouldn't have claimed that it was other dyers/Treehouse were threatening her but Treehouse should've just moved on from being blocked instead of making a public statement. If someone wants you to leave them alone, leave them alone! if you HAVE to discuss it reach out to some of your friends in the space privately. I am also suspicious of Treehouse bc as far as I know, there isnt any proof of Sock reaching out to her followers, right? so it all seems that everyone needs to just move on cause 90% of the situation was never that serious (barring the anonymous threats obviously)

I've taken on line courses on yarn dyeing, and it's really difficult to copy another dyers colour way even though the dye and bare yarn brands are disclosed. It's not that hard to learn dyeing.

I can see not wanting to look at other's work. seeing other people's work can sometimes be anxiety inducing with feelings of comparison, not-good-enough-ness and insecurity. Why is it that for handcraft-related businesses, there’s this expectation that business owners/creatives should be everyone’s friends? I know nothing about the indie dyeing scene but I’ve seen this elsewhere in female-dominant handcraft milieux - if you just want to do your thing, run your business, and protect what you create from being stolen, it really pisses off some types of people that you aren’t “generous.” Then these people whine and cry that “it’s not fair.”
I suspect Sock is simply protecting her proprietary business secrets from all the freeloaders who just want to be handed a ticket to starting their own businesses without putting in the work. My background is with knitting - 3 decades ago I observed that the best designers rose above all the petty shit and just kept on creating because that was their strength. They did their best to protect their brand and fostered loyalty by staying on track and letting the sleazy operators show themselves up as time went by.

I mean, it kinda sounds like sockobsession got traumatized about copying and plagiarism in art school and now has this really weird complex about it, to the point where she feels anxiety about any artist looking at her work or HERSELF looking other artists' work. like we just sort of on the surface think "that's insane that's not how art works" but actually THINK ABOUT IT for a moment. we know that's now how art works and yet she sounds so paranoid about it because she doesn't want people copying her but also she seems scared of HERSELF being perceived of copying to the point where she doesn't even want to LOOK at art! that's horrifying! which for sure would be something addressed in a therapy setting. it doesn't excuse her ~allegedly creating threats against her to justify blocking people and messaging their followers and defaming them, it just explains the behavior. remember that everyone: explanation is not an excuse.
Honestly, where would we be without you, Emma? When one hears rumblings of drama it can be so hard to understand what's happening, and your research is always impeccable. You are a real gift to this community. (And FWIW, I agree with your final conclusions.)

I totally agree that both sides have made this situation go too far. I think sock is totally free to block whoever they want even if i dont agree with their reasoning. I think that by trying to uphold the "positive vibes" that indie dye-rs try to have, the blocked dye-rs ended up not having positive vibes at all, even if unintentional.

I have seen similar drama from this sock person on Witchblr before. It's always wild what drama from other random communities makes their way through at some point or another XD
Just wanna say you are my current favorite channel especially for “drama” and commentary content, I really enjoy your writing and delivery style, I love your choice of topics, I like that I get to engage with juicy internet “drama” that feels impactful (crafting is very important!) but also low stakes, I get to relax and just enjoy, I get very excited when you upload, even as someone who doesn’t crochet or knit myself, but I love putting your videos on while I draw and work on my comic :)

You missed the drama around Wizard yarns.
They had a Facebook page before Sock accused them of “copying” her. On their Facebook page, you could see they’d been dying that purple yarn for years before sock.
Sock sent her followers after a small Indy dyer to the point they had to make their instagram private and their Facebook page went down.
This youtuber and many of the commenters seem to be fans of sock and are totally biased
Look at them accusing the one girl of crying about being blocked when she was obviously crying because sock is literally defaming her to tree's customers and threatening her livelihood

A lot of things don't confirm emails before letting you use them, partly because for smaller websites, the confirmation emails themselves will often be treated as spam. Even in your email, if you look in your spam folder, you have to understand that many of those messages did NOT come from the address they show as their "from" field! It is possible that Sock faked these, but I wouldn't say it's likely. A distressing number of people actually react like this when blocked or banned from things.
I ran across your channel by accident. Started at book tube, wandered to crochet community, and now this channel with a ton of craft drama. It's like a True Crime channel without all the deaths!

in comedy, it’s actually a common thing for comedians to not listen to/watch other comedian’s material so that they don’t like accidentally plagiarize jokes, just like the information maybe seeps into your brain and later you come up with something without realizing you actually got it from somewhere else. So i can see her thought process of not wanting to follow a bunch of other dyers and i don’t really understand why the other people got so upset over that, as for the threats and stuff like that’s just wild lol
Out of all this drama the thing that most surprises me is the fact that the "gof***yourself" email was not already taken in ANY existing domain.

So much shit and drama in any art/craft/clothing/thrift community would be null if only people adapted the motto “you eat, I eat, we all eat” meaning there’s enough to go around, we build each other up, we support and we recommend others. There’s buyers for EVERYTHING.
That's easy to say until you have other people ripoff your designs that took hundreds of hours to come up with and stealing your customers. I don't think people understand what it's like to make a living off your own creative work. If they did they wouldn't take it so lightly.

15:19 Sounds like an awful way to be taught art. I'm studying Fine Art in university and we've always been implored to be inspired by other artists or get inspiration from other artists. During our time here, we've also had well-established artists come speak with us regarding our own works, giving us pointers as well as historical and contemporary artists to take inspiration from. Sure, we have faux walls up but we can always see what everyone's doing and it's evident that we're all making drastically different pieces to exhibit, even if one of our lecturers gives us the same artist to look at. One of our exercises in our fourth semester was exactly that, and no two images were the same even if the same artwork was assigned. Not to mention, we're all subconsciously inspired by things in our life and nothing is ever truly original. It's unrealistic to strive for pure originality because the fact is that if it exists, its been done before.
I will say I have been following and buying from Sock Obessions Yarns for years, I think close to when they first started. Don’t even remember how I came across them, but in all these years they have only posted yarn sales from what I saw. This is the first drama that I have seen them be publicly involved in, and I did respect her position because of the proof she showed with regards to the emails and it wasn’t something I saw her frequently engaging in. It seems like she has reached a boiling point and felt like it was affecting her business in some way. Thank you for your coverage of this and I agree with your take overall. Very well articulated!
It's super easy in art school to convince yourself that every other artist is out to get you, Your revolutionary Idea, and WILL take all your success you've convinced yourself is in this idea. I didn't look at other artists work because I didn't want to muddle my own idea. They have there already, The ideas Done, there's no reason I Shouldn't just think about my own practice, and Work. I think if you convince yourself of this for so long, and not be able to take a step back it can almost turn into this sort of madness. Ive grown so angry like this about others "getting there before me", having success with an idea you also had. it's like major FOMO. Art school drilled into my brain the only artists, are the ones that are famous, and are remembered. Anything less than that, isn't worth striving for.
Everyone should just chill... like... why is it a big deal when someone blocks people because they feel spammed or they personally think they shouldn't see other artists creations? Like... what is it to other people if Sock thinks that way? Everyone can think about this what they want but that's no reason to hate her for this? Like Emma said, yeah, you can be upset about being blocked, but... at the end of the day it's not the end of the world, live your life and go on.
I get why people would be upset at first, but... why let this spiral into this kind of drama... with d**th threats and reposting a reposting of a repost and stuff... whew...

Great video! It is easy to see how both parties blew things out of proportion and turned this into a bigger issue than it needed to be.

I am a (very) small indie dyer, and I just checked and am not blocked by Sock! I love following other dyers on IG. I'm never looking to copy colorways other dyers are doing though. I just like yarn.
The mother-in-law of treehouseknits helped teach me how to knit so I feel a personal connection to this drama
Hi Ashton, It's Tammy. Lauren mentors a lot of new dyers. She has a heart to help new indie dyers and shares tips and tricks to help them be successful. I believe one of Lauren's new indie dyer friends is one who was targeted by SO. I believe Lauren's motive was one of protection. Lauren ended up being THE target when coming to her friends defense. Lauren was notified by a couple of her customers that SO was contacting them individually telling them what a horrible person Lauren was and that Lauren was issuing death threats. That's when Lauren felt the need to make the video explaining herself. Lauren is a huge introvert and hides from controversy. I know she wishes this would all go away. I had no idea who SO was until this happened to Lauren. I'm blocked by SO too. Somehow I feel as if I did something wrong and not allowed to be a fan of SO. I'm so happy that other dyers that I look up to and am a fan of don't feel the need to block other indie dyers. I love Chelsea Yarns and Skein Cocaine. I'm a huge fan. I love yarn too. I'm a yarn shopper myself.

Suggestion for some more drama! It isn't fiber or "crafting" per se, but it is still a creative space. NANOWRIMO had some drama this past November that led to massive site changes and staffing changes, and some very vague apology emails and FAQs and I'd love your take on it.

I’m a newish indie dyer and haven’t been blocked- I love supporting other indie dyers new and established one.
I just don’t think I could bring myself to care this much if I was blocked by someone. Like it would be a bit weird but just move on with your day 🤷🏻♀️
When I stumbled upon the first yarn/knit/crochet drama video by emma I had no idea there was going to be SO much of it, it seems truly endless
Sock's reasoning for blocking people is irrelevant but, I think her logic is sound and not as paranoid as one might think. As a graphic designer, I don't follow other graphic designers, I follow other types of artists. If your feed is mostly people who do the same thing you do, you *will* end up copying someone whether you realize it or not. Obviously I can't help but see graphic design, it's literally everywhere, and I'm sure Sock sees plenty of dyed yarn in the world too. Like she said, overlap (and copying) are inevitable. But, on this very channel, we have seen multiple cases of people getting into long spats about someone copying them and oftentimes their "proof" is that the accused follows the accuser and has maybe even liked some posts. Is she paranoid about getting involved in that type of drama when she found herself in drama for just having some people blocked? I really think Sock just wants to create independently and remove people as she sees fit. Maybe Treehouse took it personally and thought the reason provided was BS, but I think she needs to focus on why having access to Sock is so important to her in the first place.
Both of them should not accuse anyone of anything without definitive proof, but no one would need it if Treehouse could just get over the fact that she's blocked.
For the record, I have no stake in the fiber arts community, that is not my medium of choice. But every time you release a new video on the fiber arts community I click instantly.

As a creative I understand what Sock is saying about not wanting to be influenced by others work. Like you said she has every right to block whoever she wants. It's the fact that people got so obsessive about being blocked that's so weird. I mean it's not like a friend or family blocking them, it was someone online that they didn't know lol that's such a bazar reaction.
Whenever em drops a video I have to wait until I'm ready to work on my big project, then I sit down with my yarn and my tea and thoroughly enjoy myself! I'll never be the first one watching their videos but I am still their biggest fan in my heart!!
15:30 fine art major here, we work in a open studio and are encouraged to look at others artwork to learn from them
good for you. not every artist has to do that. there are no rules in art.
