Oh my god! Dude, thank you so much! You have no idea how hard it is to find ANY decent, accurate info on HDR editing/exporting of gameplay footage! Quite honestly, I don’t know how many more of your videos I’ll watch but I will definitely subscribe and hit the bell icon because that’s the least I can do for how helpful you have been. This video is severely under-liked and under-viewed, it should be one of the top ones when searching Davinci Resolve HDR. Thank you so much! By the way, looking forward to videos of converting assets (pictures/facecam, etc.) to Rec.2020 so they can be viewed in HDR along with gameplay footage (that’s if you plan on making those in the future).
Hi Peter. Sorry mate, I completely missed your comment when you posted it seven months ago. Thank you so much for the time took to make this detailed comment and you are more than welcome and I'm glad the video was useful. My channel covers a lot of different types of tech stuff and I have to try and do videos that will grow my channel and make me some income. Unfortunately, these types of videos don't seem to be very interesting to most people and they can take a lot longer to make compared to other videos that are shorter product videos that I get subs and income from, so I have to be careful with my time. That said. I use Windows and Mac for capturing and editing as well as stand alone recorders and OBS studio has recently become Mac ARM compatible, so there's a fair chance that I'll start doing more videos like this one. I also have a Windows gaming system, PS5 and Series X, so I'm going to try and do workflow videos for a whole bunch of that type of stuff. Once again, sorry for the late reply and I MASSIVELY appreciate your comment. Cheers, Dave.
Thank you so much!! I was Totaly freaking out when i saw my first HDR game footage so white in davinci compared to the original. You have been a massive help!! Thq!
nice. wanted to do the mp4 cos quick time format generate extreamly high capacity files even for 2 min vids in 4k HDR. thanks for this vid. let the HDR 4K game play uploads begin !
When exporting HDR, I actually find a huge different between limited or full color range. Weird. Granted this is when exporting with DNXHR. RUclips recognizes it well, but full range has far more contrast, which makes me think limited is likely ideal, if a difference is observed, as there is more detail but black level still seems true.
For standard video content, limited is the one to use. You can set the colour range in the extra tagging for the export. I don't export using the Avid codec, so don't know if its default is full. Cheers Dave.
HDR is ALWAYS full. never use partial when exporting hdr footage. the standard (by the industry) was set to full for a reason. I don't know why the limited option exists tbh. it should not be there.
@@DavidHarry no dont set partial / limited. the hdr10 standard is clearly full range. I don't know why that option is even in there. it should not be there. HDR is always full.
Thanks for this tutorial David. For the Encoding Profile, I can only select "Main" - there's no option for "Main10." Is that because I'm using the free version of Davinci Resolve?
@@DavidHarry I'm having this same issue, using Davinci Resolve (not studio). I selected the MP4 format and H.265 codec and the encoding profile only gives one option which is "Main". I checked the output file and confirmed the bit depth was 8 bits instead of 10.
Okay so update, I exported as DNxHR HQX 10-bit (MXF OP1A format) and re-encoded to a more upload friendlier (and still 10 bit hdr) format and then uploaded that to RUclips, and now that time has passed they are able to be viewed in hdr mode on RUclips! Thank you for the great tutorial :)
Hi. I’m glad you’ve found an option for your final upload. Although, I’m not sure why Resolve didn’t allow you to select 10 bit for H.265. It may be a difference between free and studio, although, if it is it does seem to be a bit petty on BlackMagic’s part to have that function as a difference, especially when the free version has so much functionality and access to the more esoteric codecs. Anyway, using a high bitrate intermediate such as DNx will have still kept your quality for feeding into whatever you’ve chosen to do the final H.265, it’s just a shame you have to have that extra step in your output workflow. Also, I’m on Mac but I doubt that would be the difference between the bit depths for the H.265. At least the tutorial helped to get you part the way there 👍 Cheers, Dave.
Hi Harry, if you were to drop this in a media reader after editing would it list the HDR format? On out from elagato mine shows smpte st2080 Hdr10 compatible , if i drop it in after davinci everything is there PQ BT2020, other than the HDR format. Is this normal and will youtube still read it as HDR? I'm on windows by the way, and yes studio davinci. Also obviously I'm a later version but do you have to go in davinci preferences, enable 10bit as well as project settings?. Have done that but still the same. I will try uploading 1 soon see if it ever shows as HDR. Its still slightly greyer than it ent in as well but not as it shows on timeline.
Just looked and yours doesn't state HDR format on the way in so maybe it doesn't need to. Also is there any benefit to MP4? As i have been going straight in with mkv 🤔
Hello, thank you very much for your video. I have followed the steps and in the end I get a video that when uploaded to youtube does not show the HDR sign and the HDR HLG sign does not appear on the tv either... @@DavidHarry oh i am! if i upload the raw ps5 footage unedited, it shows up as hdr. but once i try editing it with resolve, it exports as a washed out file. not sure what im doing wrong
If you follow my guide exactly the same, the output file will be washed out if you play it on an SDR device because it is HDR. If you play it on a HDR device it will play properly, if you upload it to RUclips it will play in HDR on compatible devices and RUclips also converts it to SDR for SDR devices. Cheers, Dave.
@@DavidHarry I'll try it again then. i did follow the exact steps and it still looks washed up on my hdr screen. 😭 heard some ppl say its because resolve doesnt support bt.2020
Hi. I’m not sure why you are not seeing it correctly. If I play the file on my Windows machine it plays washed out because the screen is SDR but if I play it with a media player that knows it’s HDR and can convert it, it will play in standard rec.709 as a decoded colour. If I play the same file on my M1 Max MacBook Pro, it plays in HDR because the Mac knows it’s HDR and it has a HDR screen. I’m not sure where read that about Resolve but it definitely is able to edit and export with BT.2020. Cheers, Dave.
Great video! Unfortunately it wouldn’t let me export the video in an HDR format with the free version. The free version will let you import Hdr files and work with them. But it appears it won’t let you use Main10 in the export and export the Hdr footage, that I could see. Appreciate the video and the detailed steps!
I output a video exactly like yours with all the info compared but uploading to RUclips doesn't yield HDR, any ideas? Its a custome ultrawide resolution if that matters
The HDR versions take longer for RUclips to render and make live. Your SDR versions will be live first then the HDR versions later. If you upload 4K, this will take longer. Check back about 12 hours or the next day after your highest resolution SDR version is live and then your HDR versions should also be there. Cheers, Dave.
It will looked washed out unless whatever you are playing back on understands the format and decodes or shows it properly. RUclips understands the format which is why it flags both an SDR and HDR version.
