  • Johann Valentin Meder (1649 - 1719) - [Suite in c-minor] (before 1704):
    1. Allemande di Joh. Valent. Medero. Capp. in Richa. [Ryga]
    2. Courant:
    3. Sarrabande.
    4. Giqve.
Buxtehude's pupil, cappelmaster in Gdańsk and organist in Riga. Probably this newly rediscover masterpiece is a fruit of friendship between composer and one of his patrons in Riga, who was great admirator of Froberger's art. For his futeral Meder arranged famous Tombeau pour Mr. Blancherocher for strings ensamble, according to his last will. The Giqve follows Reincken's manner of fugal gigue including inversion in the second part, but ribatuta trills in Allemande and Courante are close to late Froberger's style ("Méditation sur ma Mort future" FbWV620/1, or "Sarabande" FbWV619/4). Harmony is strikely unusual, and remainds me Esaias Reussner Jun.'s "Allemanda" from Suite VI in e minor ("Delitiæ Testudinis"). The collection was very popular in Gdańsk after Reussner's performance (as a child) and contacts with town Council. Two of Froberger's pupils (Ewald Hintz and Meder's predecesor Balthasar Erben) were prolific musicians in Gdańsk. I hope this masterpiece will join a repertoir of our days harpsichordists.
