- On June 25th, 2024, I cycled 81 miles on the Greenbrier River Trail from Cass WV to Caldwell WV. The ride was completed on a 2022 Sonder Broken Road Mountain Bike with a custom Bearclaw titanium fork and a Jones H-bar handlebar.
My thoughts on the trail - Overall the surface is very good. Comparable to the Great Alleghany Passage Trail and better parts of the C&O Canal Towpath trail. Mostly smooth with very little standing water.
As far as points of interest and towns to stop in - there aren't that many. If you've ridden trails like the GAP and C&O, you will be disappointed in the POIs and stop through towns. While there really isn't much to see other than a few tunnels and railroad bridges - the wildlife and nature sounds do make up for it somewhat. It was a very peaceful ride. There is only 1 town directly off the trail - Marlinton, so plan your food stops accordingly unless you want to venture off a few miles like I did.
If you're looking for a great gravel trail to do some serious training on OR you're looking to get off the beaten path for some peace and quiet - this is your trail! The trail surface is very fast and there weren't too many people around. Highly recommend if you're in this area of West Virginia!
*** Lodging Recommendations:
Do Not book any AirBnB in Cass - Trust me. I had the worst experience ever with a host whose name rhymes with Fancy. Not bike friendly!

I’m riding this trail this coming Sunday and Monday. Camping near the midpoint and plan to ride out and backs each day. Thanks for the preview !!
Walked this up and back over a week period back in 2015. Beautiful area and trail.
Speed limit must be 52 and the camera flipped it to 25.
We did about 7 miles of that. Beautiful area
I bikepacked this trail last summer and loved it! Jack Horner's Corner in Seebert was a real treat--good food, quality supplies, and even beer. I kinda wanted to stay there and not leave LOL.
Thanks for the tip. I totally missed this place when planning the ride. Would have saved me 45 minutes or so going here instead of doing a big hill climb into Renick to hit that Exxon station.
Sounds like a fast cadence.
hey dude, what kind of bike you riding? looks like a fixed blade fork hardtail!! looks like you aint' carrying much!! anyhow thanks for sharing!!
It’s a Sonder Broken Road MTB with a custom titanium bearclaw fork. I talk about it here: ruclips.net/user/clipUgkxTUfyq_H80FWHb_JksBOYfQ-vO2CIARXt?si=Leb4Gjg6Ye2h3rHM
I was only carrying my drone for this trip. I was expecting to go much faster since I did the C&O fully loaded, but a headwind slowed me down most of the way. Still a great ride.
