  • As part of their duties as a cleaner, they are permitted to ride on the footplate to observe how steam locomotives are driven and fired correctly. By volunteering as a cleaner, I was lucky enough to get on the footplate of the sole surviving LSWR T9 in operation.
All members of the footplate are Swanage Railway volunteers over 16 years of age and NOT members of the public. Being on the footplate was with the permission of the driver and fireman and after all cleaning duties were completed.

Wonderful!!!! And thank you ever so much for posting!
I started down at the Dart Valley . Gave up with the railway, did some time with 80064 and moved away. Back then they had masses of Volunteers but no forward thinking.
We at Reading Model Engineers have Young Engineers The only trouble is is that they have a tendency to grow and get jobs in the re emerging Engineering industry!!!
    David and Lily.

As far as I know, the T9 is currently in operational condition for a few years.
