This episode is a ROAD TO REDLINE TAKEOVER special!
You may or may not know I also have a podcast, Road to Redline, which I co-host along with my buddies Andy Brookes and Joe Williams. Road to Redline is a Porsche-centric podcast, as we're all Porsche owners, and it's available across all podcast platforms!
We're now on to series 2, yet it occurred to us we'd not actually driven each other's cars yet. So, what better way to assess each other's ride (and take the mickey a little!) than to get up early on a Sunday for a blast through the countryside?!
In part one here, you'll be introduced to my podcast co-hosts and their current Porsche, before joining us on our drive from West Bay to Poole, swapping cars along the way. Can the 996 hold a candle to its 993 Carrera predecessor, and can the 987 Cayman race car bridge the gap to its 911 superiors?
Part two drops soon, where we discuss the merits of each car and pick a winner from our Porsche 996 v 993 v 987 Cayman head-to-head!
We had great fun putting this together, and hope you have just as much fun watching our adventure. Let us know what you think of each car in the comments below… let battle commence!

Got to say I am always amused by the criticism of the 996 interior against that of the 993. The 993 is old fashioned, switch gear is scattered everywhere and sitting behind it the steering wheel one is confronted with an interior from the 70's that has not aged well. But words like classic and well built are thrown around because we are all required to worship at the altar of air cooled 911's. It is just hilarious and is based on prejudice not reality. A 996 dash looks dated today because it is more than 20 years old, however it is miles better in looks and ergonomics than the 993 or any air cooled 911.
The plastic complaint is easily fixed with a visit to an upholsterer or alternatively wait for one that has been specified to your taste. The great thing with the 996 is that they made a lot of them and speaking from personal experience a 996 with a full leather interior and the carbon fiber highlights is a very nice place to be and the only people who comment negatively are the air cooled guys in their anoraks, everyone else gets in and comments how nice it is.

As we now know, the 996 interior was meant for the 993 but due to Porsche's lack of budget then, it was not implemented. Wonder what the elitists would say about the 993 interior if the original plan went through?

Kieron Smith , It’s different. Boxster/Cayman have better initial turn in easier to get to the limit safely. Smaller cabin. 911 feels after yet ability to vault out of corners is notable and the cabin is roomier. My 996 manual cab is a winner with kids, and yet, I found 5 years of prior Boxster ownership memorable. I can forsee having a Cayman alongside my 911 cab

Air cooled guys can and never will admit to liking a 996, and 911 guys can never admit to liking any Porsche other than a 911 🙄 There will always be a "but" because everyone is afraid by admitting they like another model it will somehow devalue their own car. I am fortunate to have owned both air cooled and water cooled 911's and transaxle cars. I have driven a quite few Caymans and Boxsters too. They are all fantastic cars, each with their own distinct character. It is not so much about what is better, but what suits your taste and driving style better.
Instead of choosing a winner why not celebrate the marque and its awesome lineup?

996.1 99 cab manual with almost no options, and I like the compact gauges being readily viewable through the wheel, unlike prior gen 911, and while the doors don’t close with a satisfying sound, my plastic fantastic does not rattle. Loved the 90s Jaguar XJ in the initial background, that’s my other car, alas the architecture there I cannot have here in CO, USA. Cayman Boxster have fantastic turn in and can be pushed more safely to the limit. Really! 993, oh that sound is great.

As much as I love air cooled 911's due to London ULEZ charge I don't find them attractive anymore therefore 997.2 for me seems to be the pinnacle of where 911's could go. When I went to visit Hexagon one of UK's leading Porsche dealers they themselves are of the opinion 997.2 is the sweet spot (see London fields interview with Magnus walker), they also go on to say anything after the 997 is Audi influenced. However if I had the money I would have all of them.

Swapping driver seats with mates are my favorite activity! It’s so inspirational and educational to get to try new/other cars to get to hone in your preferences right.
Never owned a 993 and just driven 3 ex (C2 and 2x Turbos) but always held the 964 to be the more interesting ride and better looking. The Caymans are just sweet as honey but I’m afraid I’ll loos interest too fast as they just don’t feel special enough.
The 996s are just marvelous for the price of a VW Polo, but agree on the interiors. They are shoddy. The best 996’s are probably in GT3 guise, as they rattle and bang so loud anyway that you forget all about the shiny plastic bits, while hitting your helmet against the roll cage while wedging your balls blue in the harnesses🥶

Lee says he couldn’t go round Europe in a / the Cayman.. The 1 he’s in is race prepped so probably not the most comfortable on long journeys, although European roads tends to be a lot smoother than our broken U.K. tarmac.. I’ve toured Norway approx 2,500 miles over 10 days and also the Alps n Pyrenees over 10 days covering just over 2,000 miles in a 981 Cayman S.. Coming from a 996 Turbo, the cabin of the 981 Cayman was just so much more a nicer place to be in.. And I’ve just (mid July) done a tour of the plains of Spain & the Pyrenees and covered 2,500 miles over 10 days in a 718 Cayman GTS (the 2.5L Turbo...tuned) also a great place to be in (the cabin) compared to my 996.. Bottom line, the Caymans are great cars to go touring / Hooning around Europe in..

4:57 First I've heard about Pinky Lai describing the Cayman as a "marketing car"...? Even if true, he knew what the market wanted and took it upon himself to design one of the most beautiful cars to run off the Porsche production line... Kudos to him. I disagree with your comments about the Cayman being a car for first Porsche ownership... Those types of comments give 911 owners a bad rep.

My first Porsche was a 997.1 S. My second Porsche is a 987.1 Cayman S. Yes, the 911 is a bit faster and more comfortable, but the Cayman is every bit as enjoyable to own and drive.

Unless you need the +2 seats, I don't see a reason to buy a 911 over a Cayman. If you want an out and out sports car, the Cayman is the one. After the 997, 911s became grand tourers.

    • @lowcountrydawg2525

@@1530swimmer I sold the 997 in early 2019 to help fund a sailboat purchase: ruclips.net/video/BJEYz0weMBA/видео.html. After about a year I found myself missing that whole Porsche/flat-6 experience, so I bought a 987.1 S because the buy-in wasn't nearly as high as the 997, but the fun factor and ownership experience was just as good. Other people may not appreciate the 987 as much because it will always be in the shadow of the 997. People will also denigrate it by saying it's just a Boxster with a roof (it's not), but it's still a really great car! When that 3.4 rolls onto Variocam at 5200rpm the sound and the rush are just glorious. 10/10 would rev again.
