- The International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that despite near-record high methane emissions from the energy sector in 2023, recent policies and pledges, including those from COP28 in Dubai, may lead to a decline in Methane emissions in 2024. Fossil fuel activities contributed around 120 million tonnes of methane emissions.
The top 10 methane emissions emitting countries accounted for 80 million tonnes, led by the United States, Russia, and China. To limit global warming, a 75% reduction in methane emissions from fossil fuels is crucial by 2030.
Efforts to cut methane emissions are expected to accelerate, with nearly 200 governments committing to substantial reductions by 2030. Reducing methane emissions is cost-effective, with around 40% of emissions in 2023 potentially avoidable at no net cost.
