      No one talks about ancient history animals, such as mammoths, etc.
      that are filled with methane gas, ancient microbes, bacteria that will all be released into our air...whenever the Permafrost melts. Supposedly the warming in Antarctica is happening 70 times faster than anticipated. Most people will ignore the real data, since there is so much inadequate data that will mollify people's fears. I
      get it. People cannot cope with reality; no blame. It's
      just the way most people are.

      One well respected scientist (Natalia Shakhova) from the University of Alaska Fairbanks has pointed out that not too many years ago the general consensus among scientists was that permafrost in the Arctic would be an effective barrier to methane release. No one believes that now.
      As well, one of the scientists in this documentary states that if we knuckle down and work to get society off of carbon based fuels we could lessen the impact of the methane time bomb by as much as 80%.
      According to Ms Shakhova, a one precent release of the methane stores in the arctic (East Siberian Shelf) could increase the heat trapping conditions in the atmoshpere by four times and lead to catastrophic climate change.
      The IPCC gives us 10 to 12 years to get our act together starting from today. It takes two years for a research papers to get approved through the IPCC, so that tells you that their data is already two years old.
      Their starting point for their .5º assessment of mans contribution is 100 years newer than what many climate scientists would say is an accurate benchmark, reducing the magnitude of human caused CO2 increase.
      (1720-1800vs1850-1900)
      Also the IPCC is a political organization under a great deal of pressure to present a conservative analysis of the situation, Finally the IPCC does not take into account many of the feedback loops currently taking place around the globe including methane release . albedo effect and wave disruption.
      So far it looks like governments are going to talk far more than act and show no signs of reducing dependance on carbon based fuels any time soon. There is far more to this than I can cover in a short statement but to make a long story short, it's not looking as rosy as this documentary would have you believe.
      Having said all of that, stating that the world is coming to an end is not productive and no one should become complacent, or despair to the point of inaction. Doing nothing will amount to a self fulfilling prophecy by those who advocate climate apocolypse. They are no better than the deniers.

    You should be careful drawing the conclusion you seem to be making. The final four experts all were very careful to phrase their statements in such a way as to avoid the question asked. Or perhaps the question they were responding to should have been included in the dialogue. Dr. Carolyn Ruppel is exactly right, this is not a reaction that can cascade to produce a bomb. However, the use of the word bomb is extremely unscientific and i am sure this is the best response possible to such a question. If you asked the question differently, you may come away with a different answer entirely.

    The endothermic argument cites sound chemistry but an inaccurate application. Endothermic just means a process consumes heat. Water boiling is endothermic. No, methane clathrate will not explode by itself. When people are trying to mine methane from the ocean, they have to pump hot water down a long way and it does not release much methane. If the whole ocean is warm enough, all of the methane will be released. The question is, how much will the ocean warm at the depth of the clathrate? Since the depths are cooled by cold currents from the northern ice pack that are going to stop, it is hard to say. - PhD Physical Chemist

    All will be OK IF we just do this which, of course, isn't going to happen. Population growing by a million a week. 1.5 million a week moving to cities. If anything, we're going to need every damn bit of energy we can get and then some. At 77, I've done plenty of talking about doing something only to find out doing it is a whole different story. Right now we're in the dreaming phase of change so there's all these wonderful solutions. None of which exist but could. But could is the key. Don't exist is the reality.

      Although our population is growing it's because we are living longer, not because of exponential growth. We stopped exponential growth in that sense a decade or two ago. The number of children is nealy the same as it was a decade ago. The population is projected to level off at around 11.5 billion in 2100 according to the UN population division. It could level off sooner if Africa levels off earlier. The population is leveling off due to prosperity not scarcity.

    This video is confusing after four viewings. This video admits that Arctic methane meltdown is potentially dangerous, but at the same time this video claims the danger is “overblown” because the methane meltdown reaction is endothermic, as if Arctic Ocean ice won't melt. The presenters of this video seem to suggest that global warming will not be warming the Arctic Ocean wherein potential endothermic meltdown reaction would occur in warmer conditions. A viewer can readily be forgiven for coming away from this video thinking the presenters assert that global warming will not warm the Arctic Ocean which, if warmed, would increase likelihood of endothermic methane meltdown reaction. The video's message is ambiguous if not completely elusive.

    • @flickwtchr
      @flickwtchr 5 лет назад +1

      You are way too kind. It is obvious the intent of this video is to downplay the very real threat regarding methane release from the fast warming Arctic. This is a trend in this flavor of propaganda. Produce web content attracting those concerned, play some lip service to that concern, and then downplay that concern. As I stated above, many of us on this forum aren't that fucking stupid.

    • @martymccorkle225
      @martymccorkle225 5 лет назад +1

      @@flickwtchr The opening scene acting by the young woman who was 'alarmed' before learning about the endothermic process hints at a notable community theater career. I felt her urgent need to grab a box of Kleenex and have a good nose blow. And the closing assurance that an endothermic process needs more heat than is presently available to occur demonstrates that Yale holds one of two positions:
      1.The endothermic process will somehow not accelerate as global warming increases
      Or:
      2. Yale does not believe is global warming.
      Either position is intellectually equivalent to believing that the earth is flat. The video is at best confusing and fragmentary in presenting Yale's position. As informational presentation, the video is sloppy if not completely nonsensical.
      Perhaps the editing took a bad turn to make Yale appear to hold one of these two absurd positions. Yale would need to clarify their position. The position presented in this video must be dismissed by an objective observer as mentally indolent nonsense in response to the pressing issue of methane/clathrate release in this time of global warming.
      This video is not only a great disservice in addressing global warming and the consequent increases in methane release honestly, but jettisons Yale's position into irrelevance.

The apparent linearity of human life is illusory. This is why the relatively new area of (Eco-psychology) ultimately leads one toward Transpersonal awareness, and quantum consciousness. What is happening, is not happening TO the Earth, or TO Humanity, but OF the earth, of which humanity is a sub-totality. Everything is to some degree anthropogenic. 1st - This video ( especially C Ruppel) state that the methane hydrates will be stable over 80 odd years due to the thermodynamics of the endothermic reaction (in that it cools as it reacts). What they did not state is that methane (and CO2) can also be produced by microbial activity on organic matter. This activity is heat producing.
    2nd - The video does not state that only a small percentage of available methane hydrates has to be released for it to be "game over" (Sharakova). Methane can be from EITHER hydrates or microbial activity - or both.
    3rd - methane is releasing right now (satellite data) and despite the endothermic reaction the geographic area is still heating up. Therefore, I don't see a "shut down" in the reaction (release) happening. Not even a pause. Certainly no endothermic cooling.

    just theoretically, once the methane accumulation in the Arctic catches a valid fire ignition, just about every square inch of the planet north of 43 degrees North latitude will be uninhabitable in about 6 weeks. And every living thing that does not evacuate in the first 6 days, will meet an unpleasant end. once the base of the water column reaches a temperature of 43 degrees F, the release of methane will present a tremendous hazard, and will be unstoppable, once an ignition takes place, the resulting fire will consume about 5 million square miles, at a "normal" temperature of the burning temperature of methane, the water will provide the oxygen as a fuel source.

    The feedback reaction of the Past? Well, interpretation of graphics tells this, that after that possible reaction, and how far that reaction takes us, it ends. Why? I am not a scientist, but looked into the subject for a while now. Their is much more that has influence on our changing climate then only the human CO2 emissions, and the effect of methane in its whole, is it really that dangerous? The molecule in itself is very potent, but in the spectrum where it works, has it such a potential to highten the percentage of radiation intake to globally make it warmer?

    • @gw7754
      @gw7754 5 лет назад +1

      The 25x increased potency of methane versus CO2 is over a hundred year time period. Methane is about 86x more potent than CO2 in a twenty year time period, a time period that really matters for the nearer term. So for example, if one Gigaton of Methane got released over a twenty year period it would be the equivalent of 86 Gton of CO2 being released over the same twenty year period. So that's roughly 4 Gton/year in what they call "CO2 equivalents" or about a 10% increase in heat-trapping greenhouse gases over this twenty year period. And that's just for a one Gton Methane release.
      You can't get a 1 Gton release of Methane without getting a much larger release of CO2 over the same time period. Permafrost can't thaw and only release Methane, it has to release a combination of CO2 and Methane while it's in the process of thawing.
      So let's assume that 40 Gtons of CO2 is released over a twenty year period versus 1 Gton of Methane. So 2 Gton/year of additional CO2 going into the atmosphere. Doesn't help but it's still not a large percentage of the total that will still be getting released due to human activities over this same 20 year period.
      Bottom line is that whatever quantity of CO2 and Methane that ends up getting released due to permafrost thawing directly subtracts from the remaining "carbon budget" or the total amount of CO2 and Methane we can release into the atmosphere through our own activities and still have a chance to remain below a 2C temperature rise, on average, across the world.
      It's guaranteed to make it more challenging to overcome, just how much more challenging is still an open question.

    A Call to Action, that's easily said.
    Real Action, Yale, is to invite all these leaders, political, opinions, captains of industry, in particular the ones still spreading doubt about warming, the Koch's, the Trumps, Exxon & Shell ceo s invite them next summer on a trip around the Arctic. Be it Alaska, Svalbard, East Siberia. Once they see it with their own eyes, they ll know how urgently action is needed.
    From what I've seen in videos of the Melting North and Methane Risks, (rapid) destabilizing of permafrost has insufficiently been researched, and Methane emissions are under- modelled in IPCC predictions. Great video - when people dig deep into the numbers Arctic methane isn't the biggest issue right now, because we can do mitigation of co2 emmissions over the next couple of decades, which reduces that threat greatly. It's not like all the methane is going to explode out the ocean one day - that's just alarmist. If they really think that, then they should just give up and enjoy the rest of their life because that's the end. Good bye and thanks for all the fish.
    People should be more concerned right now about 'fracking' - because between 6-10% of the fracked gas is lost to the atmosphere between the well and power station - and that's before burning the other 90-94% and dumping that co2 into the atmosphere. Thing is - the 6% that escapes is 25x more of a GHG than co2 - so the 6% that escaped is like 150% co2 + the 94% which gets burnt - adding even more to the overall GHG footprint of fracking derived gas... and then the sealed old wells fail after a few years releasing all their toxic fracking chems - and even more gas.
