Helping Older Adults with Appetite Loss

- Unfortunately, loss of appetite and many associated negative outcomes is a common problem for many older adults. The National Institutes for Health (NIH) estimate that between 10% and 30% of older adults experience a decreased appetite. While there are numerous reasons for loss of appetite including side effects of certain medications, decreased energy, and various health conditions, it is important to help seniors improve their appetite and encourage them to maintain a healthy diet. I experienced this with my mother, who lived in a skilled nursing home the last couple years of her life. As her appetite diminished, so did her health and well-being.

Turn up the volume on your phone or computer to hesr him better. I can hear him very well
I remember while I was an RN teaching my open-heart surgery patients to EAT FOR YOUR HEART, YOUR LUNGS, YOUR LIVER, etc. etc. I'm not sure it worked. I just remember they're not being interested in eating much of anything. NOW THAT I'M A SENIOR whose taste buds are gone and I only want the same things every day, I'm not sure anyone can truly understand this stage in the aging process until they're here.
I can fast for 48 hours and only then in the middle of the second day I get a bit hungry. The hunger disappears after my first bite.
I get it. My appetite has diminished quite a bit and I was always a big eater as a young adult and all through my child-bearing years. My weight has dropped quite a bit and when I do try to eat more to gain weight it always comes back off. I don’t want to end up with that frail look a lot of elderly folks get. I can easily go 24 hrs without feeling hungry and when I do reach the hungry phase it doesn’t last long
I don get why like most the hospital food is so gross like those ppls lives aint bad enough.....
Thank you. Going through this with my mom.
So your answer is crappy fast food? How about proper nutrition with real high quality supplements?
this was a very thoughtful and helpful video, thank you.
All the videos you do are absolute no volume it is of no use.
Wonderful video! Lol. You have such a great outlook on this.
You do need to be careful with deep fried chips. I was indulging my 95 year old mom's love of potato chips and she ended up puking up because I believe the deep fried, especially chips causes bile sludge and little stones even when the gallbladder is removed and she experienced a blockage. She likes granola bars, so I like to keep those around and fresh fruit. Ice cream isn't deep fried and she likes vanilla. She is still eating and likes my cooking most of the time, but she is eating smaller portions and has lost 10 lbs in the last year. It's tough.
Thank you - Appreciate your guidance Doctor... 🕯 🙏 🕊

Great video
Thank you. Good health
Yes, choices are important, as are the times that people like to eat. I like to eat when I'm hungry. If I have to wait until lunch or dinner my appetite is lowered. Also, don't forget Depression. Many seniors don't have the variety of daily happenings that younger people are used to and this depresses appetite as well. I am borderline senior at 71 and i try to get out as much as possible, but seniors in homes can't and just sit around or watch TV and otherwise vegetate. It's important to not only get out but to vary the daily abstracts as much as possible. Sights, smells, sound and touch are all important to make a senior feel alive, but there also is the lack of freedom in doing what someone else schedules, how ever well intentioned they are.
I’m homebound depressed have bipolar disorder anxiety. I fell 2 years ago drunk and hurt myself really bad. Can’t drive anymore. I really think I have anorexia. I have been since I was a teenager. I just am not interested in food 😢
Sum 1 really needs 2 step n n do sunthin about this gross hospital food 100
