- Another in our new series of HD videos covering the military history of the United States and various conflicts over the centuries - with a spotlight on the Soldiers who fought for their country.
This installment illustrates and demonstrates the various elements of the United States Army “Casey’s Manual” for Infantry Soldiers - a manual of arms used primarily by the Union Army during the Civil War. The three-part tome was published by the War Department in 1862 as an update to an earlier manual written by William Hardee and now used widely by not only the Union Army but by Confederates as well. In 1862, Hardee was now a Confederate Major General.
This video is an ideal primer and guide for re-enactors on how to properly hold, carry and use the three-band musket during the American Civil War.

These men are drilling properly and their kit looks great. A fine video for new reenactors or chairborne history buffs.
Take a shot every time the announcer says "notice the placement of the left hand"
@Ryan Kerper that's the joke
I do civil was re-enactments and just became old enough to use a rifle. This was very helpful with learning the basic Manuel of arms.
Ronnie McDonnie I want to get into it but I need to be 16 to shoot
Have you marched in Gettysburg for Rememberance Day?
michael preston yes I have, but only once.
JKHERPS _ I recommend still getting into it. I was a reenactor for three years before I could pickup the rifle. But I spent that time learning tips from the others guys. And my regiment starts teaching people to shoot at 15, but we can’t use them in combat till 16.
Trepang 412 thank you very very much.
Hey, it's good to see my old Andersonville roomate Pagano still knows his manual of arms. Hats off to ya from Jonesboro.
This video is good in that it explains the reasons for the different parts of the Manual of Arms.
Well done and professionally done. Great video for anyone who wants to get into the hobby
NOTICE THE POSITION OF THE RIGHT HAND
I am an Italian re-enactor, I play the role of a Confederate soldier from the American Civil War. Great video, very informative. If you allow me, I'll pass it on to my reenactment group
Very fascinating! Almost like little bit of history in real-life!
If the Union soldiers just place their left hand in the correct position during the first battle of Bull Run. The war could have been won on that fateful day.
Fascinating and well-done video, very informative.
One of the best.instructional presentations. Good work, Gentlemen.
Mostly Correct.. a little bit here and there different from Casey's Tactics. I also own a real 1863 US Regulations (with amendments up to June 23, 1863) and they have commands in there. Slight difference. The Amendments reflect for 1863 Reenactors since the little changes from 1862 Regs relate to most common soldier impressions (like Sky blue Pants, All Officers can wear Mounted Great Coats, Hash marks for service and other items). Pay tables and a wealth of information.
Just discovered this channel. Subbed and will be following. Great work.
New drinking game take a shot everytime he says "shoulder arms"
Excellent video.
This soldier looks like he's seen things.
Well done!!
No episodes on "Checkmate Lincolnittes!"
A corporal with the wrong belt? Don't mean to nitpick. Good training video!
Not sure how he is wearing the "wrong belt" - the corporal is wearing a standard issue NCO belt - silver leaves for NCOs and solid gold for Officers. This type of NCO belt - thought normally reserved for Sergeants - could be worn by a corporal or any NCO.
I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out!
I don't know about the rest of you but see some locked knees. Someone's gonna pass out.
They also should have done the fix bayonet from the shoulder to show that from the order to the order and the so nice out I think I'll leave it out.
Good Stuff
Arms port? Since the preparatory command precedes the execution, should the command not be port, arms since arms is the execution command in all other positions?
*LIKED* the video --- *1st Minn Sharpshooters* channel with Civil War reenactor live fire, hard marching, and rustic adventures ... enlist today.
Do a video on scotts manual of arms
Move the weapon around your head not your head around the weapon. One of the many things reenactors do that drive vets (by this I mean Marines and Army Infantry) up the damn wall.
Wrong, per the manual. Casey’s Volume 1 School of the Solder paragraph 181. “Incline the head upon the butt, so that the eye may perceive quickly the notch of the hausse,” So the head moves to the piece.?
@@erikschultz7166 Now how about everything else?
Support arms, right shoulder shit, present arms, shoulder arms, order arms, ground arms, etc.
Appears to me you are the one that is wrong.
@@andrewwash8005Except to aim and fire they are not moving the head around.
So I'm guessing "Carry Arms" is what Chamberlain ordered his men to do at the Appomattox surrender to Gordon.
Hi hth
The soldier resemble actor Jack Black !
true
I am trying to ease into reenacting, though the hardest item to find is the standard Springfield model 1861. On the other hand I am able to get an Enfield model 1853, will Union regiments accept these Enfield's in substitution of the Springfield?
Most units will usually accept '53 enfields. Some of the extremely hardcore units only allow '61 springfields. My personal recommendation is to get a '61 springfield for a more accurate impression. The first thing you should do is get in touch with the unit you wish to join and ask for their advice.
Also, dixie gunworks has repro '61 springfields in stock for $995

Ah, alrighty then. Thanks!
Wish they had someone who could pronounce shoulder

This looked easy, until I got a 10lb Musket and tried it for myself. One quick jab into my ceiling and I was done.
Or go down to the order too quickly and slam your toes. It's practically initiation to do that with my unit.
A 58 calibre? That must have kicked like hell when fired
Not really, black powder shoots pretty smooth due to the lower burn rate. It mainly pushes instead of kicking.
Well its also a heavy gun. It kicks but not awful. That’s about a 9 pound gun
Even then, they only used 60 grains of powder which isn't wimpy but not hard kicking either.
11 Rebs must still be salty about losing.
What's this 😋

Will you ever reupload videos taken down before? Like the Civil War Combat series? I wanted more episodes.
Demonstrate the moves properly don't just toss the piece about. Give the counts and the times.
you don't need to, it's just rather unnecessary. That would rarely be used, and when it was, it was used in basic training on how to do the drill. This is just a demonstration of the positions, in a way they would've been actually used. he's not 'tossing the piece about', either. that's the actual way to do it.
thats no musket. Its a rifle...
It's called a rifle musket.
I don´t think you know the difference between a rifle and a musket. A musket has a smoothbore barrel. While a rifle has a rifled barrel hence the name rifle. So a rifle musket is like a black white horse. The term rifled musket referred only to muskets that had been produced as a weapon with a smoothsbore barrel and later had it replaced with rifled barrels.
Shut your dumbass mouth! www.lodgewood.com/Rules-for-the-Management-and-Cleaning-of-the-Rifle-Musket-Model-1855_p_2503.html en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rifled_musket
Rifled musket is the correct term for a three banned rifle of the period.
Yankees? Ew.........
That what a winner looks like
Life isn’t fair.
It’s been 150 years. It’s time to move on.
@TheVisigoth, then let you be surprised. The video mentioned about Hardee's 1855 being the reason Casey's was made because it would be modern to that older version plus as the video stated Hardee went on to fight for the Confederacy so why would the Union use a "rebel's" manual. General Hardee revised his own manual in 1862. So yes the CSA had an official modern manual as well... You may say it was an army of "Jim bobs" as you call it but believe it or not many of the South's high ranking officers and Generals were career soldiers from the US Army before the war as well as West Point graduates just like their Union counterparts. People just assume because the confederacy lost they had a bad military, if anything they lasted as long as they did because of their experience against all odds.
@Jamesbond. So ...lost causer much? This is presentation and discipline of a professional soldier
@@shanewoody4232 that’s also what 300,000 dead yanks looked like
The entire video is about how to handle a SPEAR. At no time is the basic function of the device, as a FIREARM, even mentioned. Video should be "How to move your club from shoulder to shoulder, and attach the pointy bit."
77gravity why they don't refer to them allways as firearms but weapons the muzzle isn't the only part that can be used
omg DUDE. this was a manual of drill, and the forms of holding the piece. It's not supposed to be used as a firearm in this. There are other videos if you wanna learn how to shoot stuff. It's not a spear, it's a musket, and that's how it would be used. DEAL WITH IT
