What a great way to discover them. Me, I was an engineering student who fooled around with being an AM radio DJ a couple hours on the weekends in the college radio station. The guy before me was raging about this new band Steely Dan because he said he knew they were gonna be huge, and HE knew it before the big city DJs did. At the end of his show, just before he turned it over to me, he spun up “Reeling in the Years” and I just said “Huh.” Shoot, the kid was right. I was a believer when I heard the whole LP a couple weeks later. 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Hari, what perfect timing! I saw Steely Dan live exactly 50 yesrs ago, March 11, 1974 at a club in Glendale , CA. In fact, 2 nights, 4 sets. No Show Biz Kids, it didn't matter.
Turns out, my HS friend, Jeff Porcaro had been hired to tour with them, so he told us about the gig.
I got to meet and hang out with my favorite band, drinking Coke and Rum on the Dan, literally, I was just 18. Go figure. Those memories make it a great time to still be alive.

Wow I haven’t heard a lot of firsthand reports from people who actually got to see them live in the 70s since they only toured a few times 72-74 before becoming a purely studio band. Being the perfectionists that They were, they were famously disappointed with the sub par quality of PA systems and venues of the day but said by the time they were on their 3rd tour in 74 they were actually a really kick ass live band. Not only had they added Porcaro as a second drummer but they had also gotten rid of their original “front man” David Palmer who sang Dirty Work and replaced him with a young singer/keyboard player who would go on to be extremely famous- Michael McDonald. You got to see them in their best 70s incarnation for sure. Luckily, numerous recordings of that tour have survived and are available to listen to on RUclips etc and on most of them the band is absolutely on fire. For that tour they had a ton of people on stage because like I said they had added a second drummer Porcaro in addition to original drummer Jim Hodder who was great in his own right and having two powerhouse drummers whacking away must have sounded huge. Walter Becker was still only playing bass but he’s an underrated bass player, he didn’t want any of the spotlight and would situate himself next to the drummers to really lock in the rhythm section. Then you had the new guy McDonald singing harmonies and playing electric piano and he would sing lead on some songs to give Fagen a break who famously had stage fright as well as a fragile voice that he would blow out easily. They still had the original two guitarists Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias, Fagen of course playing piano and synth and singing and then the 3 other singers, the two female singers so they could do songs like this plus Royce Jones who had a nice high voice and kinda took over for Palmer singing the ballads. Id love to know what you remember about the night and if the band was in good form, was Fagen in a good mood that night? The stories go that by the time of that tour Fagen had conquered some of his stage fright and was actually really getting into directing the giant band like a madman from the front of the stage, standing on his piano and conducting. Would love to go back in time to see it!

great players; Jeff (Skunk) Baxter , and Denny Dias. Give a listen to

The backup singers are singing "You go to Lost Wages". Rebel comic Lenny Bruce called Las Vegas that in the 60s. This is their second album, so I figure they've seen behind the curtain, and are now lampooning all the spoiled show biz insiders. So yeah, it's about rich people and their excesses. I love the song. 7:46..On that take out, it sounds like there's a party going on with all the talking. And you're right-They wanted to release this as a single, but they wouldn't censor that one line so the studio refused. Best one-chord groove of the 70's. Funny how songs try to do this now with programmed tracks and it sounds sad in comparison to all the swagger of the "ShowBiz Kids" musicians.

I highly recommend you check out a live performance of this song in your own time on the RUclips channel "The Midnight Special", where they manage to play every part of this song live flawlessly and you get to see some of the guitar work you hear all throughout this song too and much much more.
