Nicely explained, Darren! Amongst the new features, this is by far one of my favourites. 🔝
So, it creates a matte to compose however you need. This is amazing, my mind just opened to a whole new world. Magic ✨
This is so good mate - week in week you are helping me to lift my game and adding so much value to my work. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!
Love your tutorials! You have helped me improve my video editing and color grading skills a lot. Thanks!
Thanks Darren, very interesting tutorial. Resolve just gets better and better doesn't it!
My goodness. What a remarkable tool. BM keep on impressing. Thank you for the showcase!
You are most welcome Anther
Really looking forward to this video. Thank you very much for taking the time to make these tutorials
My pleasure!
Wow! This feature is a game changer! Thank you very much Darren for pointing that out for us 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
very welcome DKH Art
As soon as I saw the depth map I knew all kinds of crazy stuff like this was going to be possible but I couldn't come up with anything specifically in my head. Thanks Darren!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow, that's a very clever way to go about it! 👏🏼
Thanks for all you do to help us out here! You’ve changed the game for me thank you 🙏🏻
Pleased to hear that!
Good you are back from NAB your vlogs from there were excellent. Love the new features in DR18 beta II the programmers are doing such good work.
Thanks Darren!
Thanks Russ. Im actually back on the road again, currently working in Barcelona! Will get some new features covered when i can sit at my suite for longer than a few days!! New features are fantastic - agreed
Thank you Darren. Shoutz from Germany 👍
Excellent tutorial!
Cool feature. Awesome tutorial. Thanks Darren!
My pleasure! Glad you liked it.
Great Darren,great!
Amazing! Appreciate your tipps. Thanks and cheers from Germany/Frankfurt am Main
Nicely done! I saw another video on depth maps that stated they didn't have a practical purpose because they didn't work well... So, I came to your channel to validate or disprove that statement... Appears to work really well! Thanks for the great video! Hope you are well!
Hi Dads Tech Talk. Nice to hear that - this tool works incredibly well on grading too….I’ll do an episode when I’m back in the studio - I am out next two weeks on a project. Good to hear from you!
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
My pleasure!
Great tutorial, many thanks.
Another great video. The depth map and other neural functions make my upgrade from the Mac Mini to the Mac Studio more than worth it. These are some amazing capabilities in Version 18.
Its certainly GPU heavy! That mac studio should handle it well. Enjoy
Best DaVinci tutorial channel!
Excellent tutorial Darren, really enjoyed this, thanks
Thank you Bernard
Amazing and fast tool indeed! Downloading 18 as I’m watching your great tutorial. Thanks, Darren
Enjoy! appreciate your commnets.
Outstanding tutorial. Thank you!
Thank you Joshua, appreciated.
Wow. Thank you Darren!
you are welcome!
nicely covered
I like how you explained the thought and process behind adjusting the matte, rather than just click here, drag here, etc.
Glad it was appreciated…I always try to make it like this so you understand deeper how and why it works. Thank you.
That is a nice looking title effect, love it!
Good eh!
This opens up some interesting ideas. Like importing depth maps from iPhones and add-on lidar sensors to tweak the mask in Resolve…
Great as always!
Thank you
This tool’s a game changer. Thanks for the great tutorial!
You're welcome!
Terrific! I hope you do one on depth map in Colour. The ability to to separate foreground from background is a grading bonanza!
100% will be doing one - Im on a crazy schedule again as usual but it is very high on my list of next videos. Thanks John.
Amazing tutorial Darren, loved it! Can't wait for DR18 to come out of Beta
thank you, appreciated
Darren, nice to see you are back in the UK, after a successful trip to LA and Los Vagas. - New stuff in DR18 Studio is pretty interesting, to say the least.
Hi, Im only back for a few hours...off to Barcelona in about 8 hours! LA/Vegas was a great trip indeed. Had a great time and met some fantastic people.
thank you
Iheard talking about that depth map since D R18 beta was just released but didn t know what is it useful for
but now. I know how strong is this new tool
Glad I could help!
Thanks Darren, great as always :)
Thanks.
Thank you
Thank You Sir for your time!
My pleasure!
Thanks Darren. Nice video.
Glad you enjoyed it - Thanks Graham
Amazing .
Hi Darren, Bart from MotionVFX in here. Thanks for using our mTitle Hype pack in this video. Just one hint from me, worth mentioning: In this pack, it's better to scale up the typo via text size individually, instead the whole content size. DVR renderer flatten the text, and there's visible dropdown in anti-aliasing. If you scale up the text directly there's no quality loss as its still an vector image. A few clicks more, but its worth it ;) Again, thanks for using our pack and stay tuned for more DVR stuff from us ;)
Hi Bart. Ok. I didnt know that. Good to know. Ill explain that in a future tutorial. Thanks for letting me know. Love your products!
I find it funny that you mistyped the word "type" as "typo" Oh, the irony.
@@sarukravitz4981 I'm using 'typo' as a shortcut for 'typography' and indeed that's quite funny typo ;)
Nice one Darren. The depth mask is really powerful. I can see all kinds of things to do with it, beyond the roto keying. But that was pretty impressive demo of that functionality. I would have been tempted to have the guy backflip over the text and bring it forward. Really opens up the imagination. Can you keyframe the depth and have rolling effects from that? I have a trash can Mac as well. I thought that I wouldn't even be able to try anything, I guess I can't say that now. I am ordering an Ultra in a few weeks, and after some waiting, maybe I can test these new OFX thoroughly. Can't wait.
Looking forward to your observations on the rest of version 18. Nicely done.
OK...editing it so he jumps over the text would be pretty straightforward and I wish Id thought to do that - great idea. Im on a film shoot in Barcelona tomorrow and so had little time to make this but squeezed it in anyway! I'll maybe do a follow up when I get back! Thanks again Jim
awesome thanks!!!
No problem!
amazing

so easy ! thanks !
Welcome
Great Video
Thank you...appreciated.
Damn!!! WOW!
Cracking tutorial
Love the depth map feature. 😀It's great for color grading (which is what I used it for) I used it to bring the detail back in a blown out sky. Very slow on the render time tho☹
Hi Jayson. Yes I'll be doing an in-depth on how to use this FX in Color page where it really shines. REnder is slow at the moment - it's a beta - it will get quicker I expect.
Great tutorial!
Unrelated question… maybe an idea for another tutorial video?
In after effects You can convert an audio waveform to key frames that you can apply to different parameters that you want to change to the beat or volume of the audio clip or specific frequencies.
Is there a way to do this in resolve?
Impressive ending haa
And the tutorial too for sure
Glad you like it
Great tutorial, btw you may want to re upload the video as you have a personal call that was captured at the end of the video
Thanks, but intentional. Glad you got to the end!!
Hi darren, your amazing tutorial. But , for now Davinci 18 is still beta publish. What i want to know, is it safe if i upgrade to beta version? for now i'm still use 17.4, thanks.
Hi not sure if you can help, I can't get the depth map to work it's just a black screen, when I invert it , I just get a white screen ive tried everything, I looked on the blackmagic forum, loads are having the same problem i have a nivada 1660i graphics card, same as most on tge forum thanks for your videos ,
♥♥♥
I just recently got the Studio version and have now depth map and magic masks available. Wonder which one is better or in which situations you use one over the other.
Depth map is based on depth....magic mask is based on person or object irrelevant of depth. Either would work in this scenario.
Excuse for offtop, in my plans to buy 4K monitor for my editing laptop, but - how much 4K monitor will load GPU of video card by 4K resolution? In this case is it better to stay with 2K monitor?
How much did she need?
Very cool. Green screen without a green screen. The possibilities..
I'm finding the Magic Mask a little easier to achieve the same. Less chasing out the greys.
How would you assess the pros/cons of the two methods?
Yet to compare in this scenario as im working overseas at the minute and not in my studio with resolve 18. Magic mask tracks an object and not ‘depth’ so there will be differences.
Also magic mask in 18 has been improved in 18 too - for objects not just people! This is great.
would it be possible to key it in your demo video so that at some point the person actually jumps/tumble behind the text?
yes, thinking of doing this - you are not the first to ask.
Is there a way to render just the black and white matte out? To send to AE etc
If you leave depth map preview ON you'll see the black and white matte,
Can't wait until DR18 is out of beta.
Usually 6 months beta but I hear it may be quicker this time around.
Thanks for the tutorial!
I was expecting that you could define the z-depth position for the text instead. Is there no way of doing this? Say you have several parallax layers and want different texts at different depths, then being able to define the greylevel (z position) of each text layer would be more flexible
Hi Roberto. You would need multiple depth maps revealing depth properties…each map is tuned to a range of depth. So I can make a larger depth but they wouldn’t be white therefore foreground would start to mix. This is a great easy way to do a complex effect. So I’m limiting the range here using the menus to be a certain depth. Hope that helps. Thank you for commenting too.
@@DarrenMostyn : that shouldn’t be needed at all. My background is in real-time 3D rendering, so I’m thinking from this perspective (and not how it is probably defined in the UI within Resolve). One shouldn’t even have to modify the depth map as you did. It should be enough with defining the color for the text, maybe adding some sort of intervals (like forcing banding on the depth map) to minimize potential flicker and just assign different Grey shades on the text layers to place them within the depth map.
Just using it as a z-buffer where the gray color assigned to a text layer would represent it’s a position. Even allowing to animate this would be easy. Of course you would need to allow a compression of values as you did, just to make sure you can place things at the top and bottom layers. I hope you understand how I mean. Or that the team at Blackmagic is reading this :)
How much do you need?
Got to admit those little audio snippets at the end are entertaining and make me chuckle. 😀
She calls every time I record! Love her to bits!
Am I right in thinking that this wouldn't work for 3D tracked text as when the subject is in the same depth the map won't differentiate.. Unless the subject/person mask would work better?
No - it will work as the depth map is analysing the video, not your 3D tracked text. Will work well.
Do you know if you have to remember to manually switch back from Faster to Better quality for rendering or does the render engine automatically choose Better?
You have to switch it.
@@DarrenMostyn Cheers
But with magic mask you can do that too and I think much better and faster
👍👏👋
Hi Darren, I have a studio version of Resolve 17. Will I have to pay the full price to buy Beta 18? That means paying the full amount all over again? Thanks.
Hi Nishi...Not a penny more...I bought mine 10 years ago and haven't paid a penny since! ENJOY!
Just download STUDIO version and it will recognise your dongle or license number - job done! No need to be on the internet every time you want to use it either!
How muchg do you need? Ahahah that cracked me up!
Every time i record!!
Hi man 1 - I hope you will provide poor quality video coloring videos (DVD) and show them as a professional 4k video. 2- I hope you will leave us a link to the videos you are working on so that we can try to edit them. Thank you I wish you a beautiful and happy day from Iraq
Hi.Happy to help
Is it available in the free version?
No its studio only
Yeah, nice feature. But the Depth Map doesn't work with my Resolve 18 Studio Version. All other features, such as the Magic Mask, just work smoothly. All I get is a black clip after applying the Depth Map. Does this feature require an extra super fast/strong computer and/or graphics card?
It is gpu intense but shouldnt be black! You need studio licence.check
Your gfx card setttings in preferences and check gfx card gpu is appearing in settings.
is for Studio? or work in version free?
studio. will work in free but will be watermarked. Worth the upgrade!
but its not free
do you think it should be ?
@@DarrenMostyn i thought it was
@@realfrankykass best value post production software out there. I highly recommend you buy the full version - one off - no monthly fee...if not enjoy the lifetime FREE version they offer.
