+steveo1kinevo - haha - yup! My team and I were working that night! And I missed the ForeFlight party to prep and rig the planes with the cameras - ah well... I think it was worth it. :)
As someone who's flown formation aerobatics (military), I have nothing but respect for these guys and anyone else who does it. It's truly a challenge that takes a lot of effort to master. Fingertip formation in straight and level flight isn't too bad after a few hours of practice.
So I teared up when he started talking about his lead. That's how you know you made a great video, Steve. Well done! Love the work you're doing, skipping beers with Steveo to give us joy! Thanks!
Great video.....Imagine my surprise when I saw "Gene McNeely" on his chest. Gene and I were friends many years ago. Unfortunately, I moved to a different part of the state and have not seen him in probably 30 years. He was always a great pilot. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform many times when he was just another crop-duster from NE Arkansas.
Check out Bill Leff.. Last I heard he was still flying shows. He was one of the first that I am aware of that was flying night shows with pyro set against his polished T-6. I was just a kid one cold winter night and woke to a 1340 growling around the sky, making all kinds of beautiful racket... I looked out across the valley and there is Bill with pyro mounted to his modified tips, testing things out. . This was probably around 1986. A beautiful site and way ahead of his time!
I know several of these guys from KTVR. At least two of them base there. The night show they put on is pretty incredible and very original compared to what you normally see at airshows.
The channel has some VERY loyal haters :) My wife and I take bets on how fast they'll be here; often with in minutes of publishing a new video (they are clearly subscribers, just so they can thumb down as soon as I publish (they never comment to reveal themselves)... It is kind of entertaining to watch how fast they get here - so yeah - I'd say haters qualify as a joke :)
This video is awesome! I've only started watching your videos two days ago and I'm hooked. Keep up the great work! I'm not a pilot but to become and your videos are a great inspiration!
Usually when you want to fly a different make/model of aircraft than you've already flown, you'll do what's called a check-out (or check-out on type COT). Often it's with an instructor, but it could just be with someone who has experience with the aircraft. The check-out process might include a written test along with one or more dual flights. A "self-check-out" is when someone basically teaches themself how to fly a new type. Technically it's legal as long as the aircraft is within the same category and doesn't require a type rating. For instance, if you did all your training in a C152, legally you could just hop in a C172 and fly it. You'd be responsible to teach yourself the differences between the two. Of course what's legal doesn't mean recommended, and insurance companies have a lot of say.
BTW, the T6 (or Harvard in Canada) is not the easiest plane to fly. As the pilot in the video said, they are difficult to land and really want to ground loop. I am amazed and impressed that he checked himself out on one!
Again, another great video that also makes me totally envious on how you were able to turn a passion into a profession. At the time when I calculated this, it was 621 👍and 4 👎 That works out to 0.6% dislike your work, that's pretty good.
+Georgia Flyer - just the way he described it really... You come at an aircraft with qualification in similar types, get a cock pot briefing from some one who knows the plane, and then go for it.
Ah one question to the Pros: I do have problems syncing cams and audio from time to time. Is there a good hint? Actually it's like a little echo developing slowly thru the video... So it seems to be synced at the beginning, but out of phase after 10 minutes or so...
It is likely a bit rate issue between different systems - I suspect you are recording on a dedicated audio recorder? I use an adapter plugged directly to one of the GoPro camera to Capture the audio, but with the Hero5 having changed the audio input again, I am considering finally going to a dedicated audio recorder (which would add more work / complexity to my set up...) Regardless, even recording straight to camera, I have noticed that even with several models of GoPro (hero2, 3+ and 4) in my collection, I can get some drift as the new ones record higher data rates... what I do on longer time lines that drift, is actually cut out a few frames every 5-10 mins of the audio track and resync to the picture. I do this in the "mulit cam" stage, before I being the actual editing, so that my raw footage is in sync before I start cutting it down.
The way those planes look at night with the lights and smoke.... and the production on this one... outstanding!
thanks Matt!
The internal cowling lights on the T-6 are always cool to see. The air to air shots are amazing. Great video!
Very cool video! I believe I was on top of the TBM hauler drinking a beer when you filmed this.
+steveo1kinevo - haha - yup! My team and I were working that night! And I missed the ForeFlight party to prep and rig the planes with the cameras - ah well... I think it was worth it. :)
Glad you did Steve :-)
Great T6's...Oldie's but Goldie's.
Great video! 76 years old and still doing formation, amazing. He must have been so proud to be part of all of this.

YEAH! "Just go to work! Baby!" Love the lights inside the cowl!
AreoShell is AWESOME. They have come to our little local Airshow for years...

Are there 3 thumbs down on this video as a joke? What an awesome tribute and time spent with that team of guys.
Well done!

I sure enjoyed the ride.
Amazing quality content! You set the bar high for aviation youtube videos.
Thanks! We're tryin'! :)
Great video!
T-6s are so nice looking
Just started flying the A2A T6 simulator aircraft. It is not an easy aircraft to fly, that's for sure, especially landing it.
Badass flying
Great video Steve. Wow, can't imagine self-checking-out in a T6!
Aaron Barnhard I am trying to become a pilot yet I don't understand what self-check- out means can you define it please?
+Aaron Barnhard - I know, right? Crazy! :P
Usually when you want to fly a different make/model of aircraft than you've already flown, you'll do what's called a check-out (or check-out on type COT). Thank you everyone for helping me with this. I hopefully will get to that point soon.
Fantastic
A lot of professions have the older generation retiring and getting out, in aviation pilots shine the most in their later years.
And many designers, too. Luigi Pascale got to 93 and just kept on designing.
start a go fund me for going with the blue angles
Nice story

Nice vid, you or @steveo1kinevo going to NBAA?
+DJ Dalite - thanks. I couldn't fit NBAA in, but I believe Steveo will be there with the ForeFlight gang.
nice
i wonder why utube que's up videos "to see next" that i watched and "liked" months ago......
How does the "self checkout" deal work?
+Georgia Flyer - just the way he described it really... You come at an aircraft with qualification in similar types, get a cock pot briefing from some one who knows the plane, and then go for it.
I can't believe that they used to just buy a T-6 to take the engine off. Guess they were pretty cheap back then?
3:17Someone know the name of the Black and orange plane/ultralight in the background at
Hey Steve, are you also gonna learn how to write in the sky?
I hadn't thought of that - ... maybe? :P
