Absolutely, and without doubt....Johnny Bench is the greatest catcher to ever play the game. Rookie of the Year. League MVP. Led the National League in HRs and RBIs twice. TEN consecutive Gold Gloves....etc, etc, etc.

My wife and I were just in Cooperstown last week. The only souvenir I bought was a autographed Johnny Bench baseball bat. It's by far my most treasured piece of sports memorabilia!

Well I have to admit to it now, I was one of those in the audience who booed when John McNamara's name was mentioned. It was me and about 5,000 other Red Sox fans who were there to celebrate the induction of Captain Carl Yastremski. It was not meant to be aimed at Johnny Bench, probably the greatest catcher ever, it was was like the line in the Three Stooge, "Niagra Falls, slowly I turn", I just reacted viscerally when his name was mentioned. Many of us held McNamara responsible for the 1986 debacle in the World Series and it was still very fresh in our Red Sox psyche. Many modern fan who know nothing prior to 2004, won't understand this, but we truly believed that we were cursed!

He left Vern Rapp off of managers he played for!!

He never played for Rapp. Rapp became manager in 1984 and Bench retired at the end of 1983.

History will show that Johnny Bench will be second only to Jadier Molina as the all time best catcher. He was a class act.
