  • The Face (or Face de Bellevarde to give it its full name) is Val d'Isere's infamous black Olympic downhill run.
Join me on a leisurely cruise down this run which varies from about 5 degrees to over 70 degrees in places and plunges almost 1km in just 3km of run (I'll let you work out the averages).
This was shot on the morning of a late March day in 2017. Not the best time of day and not the best time of the season but somehow the conditions were as good as I have ever found them on the Face.

It's a Windows application called Dashware (name checked in the credits at the end of the video).

What is the middle graph on the left hand side? It can't be the profile.

It _is_ the profile, but sadly the altitude accuracy is pretty poor on this and so it shows uphill sections when still going downhill. For future videos I used a much better tracking device and so they will show a much more accurate profile.

where is the famous start!!! :(

I've never seen the start open to the public, unfortunately.
This is the run as anyone can access it, racers have to hike up the hill a bit further to the starting hut, but as I say I've never seen the hike or the hut open, and the start run is never prepped in any way (if it has snow!)

Yeah...sadly the altitude accuracy is pretty poor on this and so it shows uphill sections when still going downhill. For future videos I used a much better tracking device and so they will show a much more accurate profile. (This was actually tracked using the Ski Tracks app on a mobile and combined with Long/Lat tracking from the Sony camera (which does not record altitude, bizarrely). I figured a rough alt graph was better than no alt graph at all - 2019 videos have much more accurate tracking thanks to having used a TomTom Adventurer.

Yeah, they say the camera never lies but it can certainly deceive!
The pitch of Face when you turn left just after the spot in the thumbnail to this video is most definitely STEEP! But that's why we love it :-)

@@nooriginalthought-mountains Not the steepest part though. Downwards, the bumps can make you jump quite far!
