Wonderful to see a live performance of this staggering work. There have been studio recordings of Evocations, most recently on Chandos, but it's encouraging to know that Roussel can still make the concert hall. I first came across the composer in the early 1970s and have enjoyed his work ever since. Interesting to compare this piece with the works he began writing after the Great War when his style changed considerably.
Oh ! Lala !
This is new for me. I never heard Roussel before, but what an interesting new acquaintance he is. He reminds me of Arnold Bax and for example his November Woods, but then comes the Radio Choir, and Roussel sure has his own way to express himself! I am fascinated by the way the orchestra and the choir integrates with each other. It is Nature in its own, I believe, without understanding the french words. At least it is my point of wiev. Thank you!
After one week with this, I suggest all of you that have the power to put this in your repertoire. I have not the power, Im only a listener, but a god listener.
There's also out there somewhere a "concert archive" recording conducted by Jean Fournet. This is a fine earlyish (Op.15, 1909-10/1912?) symphonic poem with soloists and chorus... thanks! Myself instead of the 3rd symphony I'd recommend the 2nd symphony and the Overture to a Feast Day orchestrally, and his fine chamber music ...
Listen the thirst symphonie "Le Poème de la Forêt " dated of 1906, it is one of the best work of Albert Roussel; the style is beetwen Vincent d'Indy, his teacher, and Debussy which has composed "La Mer", one year before. The best version is with Charles Dutoit with the label Erato.
Bewundernswert!
Beautiful! Typically impressionistic! A great performance lavishly portrayed by the orchestra & singers! Thanks for the post! Jamshed Delvadavala from Mumbai.
You fellas know I'm a fan of the channel by now and I'm always amazed that you find something new. Somehow from the very first bars of the opening I feel 'connected to this' ... can't explain it and won't try but there's an awesome sense of calm swept over me ... I don't 'have' 45 minutes right now BUT I'm going to MAKE 45 mins ... Does this make me a Time Lord ( Like Dr Who ) Thanks again ... much appreciated :-)
Great Roussel! This concert was held on September 20, 2019, which was my 60th birthday and the day after I retired from the company.

YOU OUGHT TO LISTEN THE THIRD SYMPHONY .
the 3rd symphony is one of the greatest symphony of the 20th century!
I'm from Brazil and I'm loving to hear this composer I've never heard or read before.
