The way this scene was filmed was that the monkey was in a cage with a small oxygen bottle. The cage was then opened up to a room filled with CO2. The Monkey quickly succumbed to oxygen deprivation and became unconscious. If you watch the clip pay attention to the right side of the screen and you will see the shadow of a film crew worker moving in to resuscitate the monkey with oxygen.
The film crew who revived them was a trained animal welfare specialist. It got the ASPCA’s approval because the animals weren’t harmed. Emotional duress didn’t count back then. Of course, the _only_ reason it counts now is because they can do it with CGI instead..

The monkey was "killed" by being placed in a large set filled with carbon dioxide. When the monkey's cage, which contained oxygen, was opened the animal was rendered unconscious by the CO2. An assistant director was off camera and brought a breathing apparatus to the monkey, who recovered immediately.

The monkey was revived just seconds after going unconscious -- a little too quickly, as it turns out.
