The older generation keralites worked in Gulf regions constructed big houses in Kerala. GCC countries don't give citizenship to migrants. So ultimately they had to return to Kerala. The new generation migrates to Europe or Canada where they can get citizenship. For them there's no need to return to Kerala

Like gold, real estate is always a weakness with Malayalis. One house is never enough. Prestige issues. This is also a reason for the increasing number of unused homes in India. Children are abroad but parents want to buy houses/apartments in India for each child.
There is also a trend among malayalis to own an apartment that they use when they return home on vacation.
They settle abroad but want a foothold in India. Getting the best of both countries. No wonder the government wants to tax them. 😁

A lot of people I know have summer lake houses that they spend only a few days every year.. Some other "snowbirds" have winter homes in warmer states like Florida. So, I don't see anything morally wrong with NRIs building vacation homes in Kerala. Having said that, they can probably be responsible about it by not building huge mansions.. In kerala, more people have the means to move to a place where they would rather be. In other places, they dont yet have the means or exposure. People wanting to leave for better opportunities and lifestyle is the situation of India... Not just kerala. The higher and higher number of people giving up indian citizenship is also an indicator of the trend. I wonder if the hate spread by the toxic new strong party is giving a sense of insecurity for the people.

I find this phenomenon a little paradoxical. Everyone is talking about India becoming a giant economy but people seem to have no confidence in the country. Things won't improve in one day or even two years but overtime things will improve. A young student in India will have far greater opportunities in India in the next 20 years. I think people leaving India are not really thinking it through. Western nations will have hard time in the next two decades.
Young Indians and their parents leaving India and Kerala have got it wrong. They think things will go wonderfully well for them when they reach abroad. This kind of thinking was okay 40-50 years back but now things have changed. By leaving India, they're killing their golden goose. Don't lose the bigger picture in search for some clean roads. Life abroad will get hard soon for them.

The confidence being expressed is on the Indian people not the Indian state. Big difference.
Indians (Malayalis among them) are among the most productive people in the world with the greatest latent potential. Their per capita income outside India dwarfs that of within India, at USD 50,000 (2013). It is a no-brainer.
Everyone wants a piece of the action, as far as dealing with the productive Indian people is concerned. That is what gets the world excited. The prospects of the nation will follow in the tailwind.
Goes towards proving the notion that “the nation is not the land, the air, the water - it is the people”.

I think govt educational institutions have no vacant seats. It's there in private ones because of the high fees. So there is migration to other states where it's affordable and to overseas when the minimum admission requirements aren't met with, or when it's cheaper. Once you pass out, it's very difficult to get a govt job even for doctors and engineers. In private concerns they are paid very badly. Their only option is going outside the state or abroad. The next generation of these people are brought up there and naturally they have no acquaintances in the motherland. Obviously they prefer to spend their life where they grew up. Senior citizens like us may be lucky to have at least some time to spend with our children. The next generation will have to be alone in this land if they decide to come back and settle here. This is true in the case of other states also. (Many of the children of my friends in Hyderabad also are in USA and UK). Kerala is going to be the homeland of migrant labourers from the North East in future.

Even in Bangalore, the salary shoots up 10 fold compared to Kerala. Most companies run their least profitable projects out of Kerala campuses. Leave engineering jobs aside and look at other jobs. Apart from government jobs what real opportunity does youngsters have in Kerala? On top of that add the mentality of old people. Why would anyone with a bit of exposure stay in Kerala?

Why can’t an agency prepare details of say 10000 houses and put on a website . Interested buyers could buy at reasonable prices , modify and use it instead of building a new home . Think about it and propose to whoever maybe interested.
The seller will save “ escape tax” and the buyer will save on all those new taxes for building his/ her house.
