I've had to use the official app a few times and the ads on the feed are ridiculous. I find it very hard to just browse topics. I'm gladly paying a few bucks a month to a third party app to just have the old experience and uncluttered feed.

Yep. On the line of alternative revenue sources, I also feel like partnerships such as the one between Google and Apple may be the way to go. iPhones basically acts as a giant ad for Google Search due to having it as default, but people don't notice and don't react to iPhones negatively due to this de-facto built-in ad, unlike other ads.
Can Reddit pull off something similar? For instance they could build in a default video editor or search engine specific to posts on Reddit but in doing so, advertise another brand in the process and that brand has to pay Reddit to be advertised.

I recommended they use Reddit to engage their customers because we sold plumbing equipment and it gave us an area where we can answer questions and discuss technical features in depth.. long story short it made great sense but I left the company before it was properly acknowledged and the marketing staff just didn’t understand Reddit. Manufacturers could make subreddits for their products and brands meaning you could go directly to the source instead of secondary/tertiary information sources.

And then there are the many AMA's. Some of them are great, and we get great responses from celebrities and companies alike!
But then there's the one like Google did the other day, where they completely ignored every single issue that has been nagging Google users for years.
Reddit is an interesting beast; currently one of the best archives of human knowledge (since Google has become so damn useless for searching lately), and at the same time one of the scummiest underbellies of the internet. It sucks that this social media site has fallen even further, especially with how digital preservation (like finding niche answers to questions impossible to find) keeps on getting destroyed and losing out to automatic “this message has been deleted to protest API changes”. And even before this, with the billions of rules and karma requirements, its so easily disincentivizes new users that just want to post once every 6 months.

Also I can't find discussions of any real news yelling the truth outside reddit subs and a few youtube creators....and theyre removing most comments of people telling the truth there too.
I can find 20,000,000+ news sources of legacy media all saying 1 exact same thing and nothing else, and that 1 thing has zero reflection on reality....but I don't want to be lied too and never have a single issue I care about discussed.

    • @stevenlynch3456
      @stevenlynch3456 4 месяца назад +3

You're implying that the "normal" human isn't an extremist. It would be extremely statistically surprising if any given human isn't extremist in at least one aspect. A person who is average by every possible metric (e.g., hobbies, weight, various forms of intelligence, stances on political issues, etc), would be very, very unlikely.
If you are intending to mean that only the viewpoints expressed on Reddit are extremist, then that's probably a case of "if you don't have anything interesting to say, then don't say it" combined with "this post is boring so I won't pay much attention to it" and other places on the web restricting those topics even moreso than Reddit does. Extremist viewpoints will naturally gain more views over time than regular viewpoints, regardless of the platform; content moderation should also be considered a factor in the question of "what content should be allowed to persist?".
The extremist points of views are what spark great discussions and are what define the full range of the human experience. Otherwise, we'd all be talking about how we walked/drove to work today on a road in a car, with no further details given, like how your car works or how the sun shines or how your car mechanic is a classic liberal/sociopath/trumper/greedy human. Yes, I'm defining extremism to include those more esoteric topics like car functionality because they are not frequently talked about in mainstream media and therefore are not "average"/"normal". I am American, so that may be a contributing factor to the deeper topics not being commonly discussed; maybe it's a global thing.
tl;dr The extremism of Reddit's content for training an AI is good too, not only bad. If Reddit weren't extremist, there would be minimal effectiveness in using its data to train an AI to act in ways that a human would.

The opening thesis of this video is ridiculous. There's no reason to think Reddit should make anywhere near the money Instagram does. Reddit is people making text posts and linking to images and discussing anything. Instagram has a zillion influencers and it's all about showing off lifestyles meaning clothing/food/experiences/things people consume. If Reddit was monetized like Instagram it wouldn't be Reddit anymore. I don't even like Reddit but the basis of this video is silly. Craigslist making more makes sense. Instagram advertises things with celebrities. Craigslist sells things. Craigslist has been around for a zillion years. Saying Reddit should be making tons of money is like saying 4chan should. They're both meant for talking, not showing off the dress, car or house you secretly rented to pose for posts in. This channel just keeps choosing false premises about popular things. "Why Sony is doing awful." But it's not. "Why Nintendo is doing awful." But it's not. Nintendo has rebounded and had tons of successes but the creator just authoritatively states a false narrative as fact and it's gobbled up.

And before you say you’re comparing the actual sites for FB and IG, their mobile apps often share links that take you to their website and not their app. So people share content from the platforms they got through the apps and when others open it, it opens ion their website, inflating the numbers.

I don't see a problem here. In fact, quite the opposite. Reddit is one of the few remaining websites that serves a purpose and isn't borderline unusable trash. If they're covering operating costs and making enough profit to continue operating then it seems they've got a fantastic business which only falls down compared to massive tech companies with fake valuations (i.e. trillion dollar pyramid schemes) whose products are utterly corrupted by flat-brained advertising, like Instagram or Facebook.
I wouldn't shed a singe tear if Instagram or Facebook shut down but losing Reddit would be an actual tragedy. It's not all about money. The internet was not originally intended to be about money. Money ruined it, as it does all things. Reddit is a bastion of worthiness in a sea of mediocrity. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still operating long after Facebook has collapsed - like Wikipedia, for example.
Good business doesn't have to mean "exponential growth". In fact it almost never actually means that.

One of the reasons it´s such failure might be related to their broken and buggy text editors. Their current most modern text editor and its predecessor (Fancy Parts) both can´t handle URL links or even simple copy-paste of plain text. The only usable one is the most basic one, in which text formatting is done completely via text commands.
On top of that, Reddit did not learn a single thing from their 3rd party apps (which they forbid about a year ago), which offered more usability than the official app will ever be able to.
In short, they´d like to monetize more, but struggle to provide even basic quality tools for the user.
