Did you know during the 2021 Texas Winter Storm and Deep Freeze, there was an HEB location in Austin Texas that was opened briefly with power, letting thousands of customers in to shop because the power grid here was failing and people were low on food. The electricity went off while people were shopping and the store just let the customers leave without paying for ANYTHING. This made national news headlines all over our country. That’s my HEB! 🙏
Wow!! Of course non-Texans such as me wouldn't know that. But reading this and others about HEB coming to the rescue...if I were living there, I'd certainly shop there a lot. What an awesome company run by awesome people.
They also sold food at price right after Hurricane Harvey. A loaf of bread was 10¢ (it's usually at least $1). They also sent out food trailers to areas where people were working to clear the roads and fed people for free. They EARN their customer loyalty.
They are an institution. I lived in TX for a while and they compare highly to Publix here in FL. Always good quality, clean stores, and helping people in emergencies.
@@bwtawny oh bullshit publiX sucks. We have them exclusively here in Miami Beach and they gouge with their prices compared to other stores. And anytime there's a hurricane or power outage they close the doors and throw every drop of food away without ever thinking of giving it away.
Shoutout to Jess, she got y'all right with the Blue Bell recommendation. Beyond that, H-E-B is an institution of Texas. H-E-B has been there for Texans through hurricanes, deep freezes, all sorts of natural disasters, probably more so than Texas government officials have. Most store brands are considerably worse than name brand, but H-E-B brand may often be better than the name brand. Truly, here, everything's better.

HEB is very important to Texas. It is the one company that seems to genuinely care for the community and is there to not only help the less fortunate with food, but also is usually one of the first to respond with aid whenever we are faced with natural disasters. Their original products are amazing and usually have reasonable prices not to mention daily specials and savings coupons. I love HEB so much.
HEB keeps us fed. I use their tortilla flour to make tortillas once a week, and we keep frozen breakfast burritos made from them in the fridge. Literally the only tortilla that stands up to it perfectly without getting stale or sogfy
Agreed. I worked for Heb for 6 years and they are a really good company I only left because I had a really bad manger at my location that made very inappropriate comments to me ALL THE TIME. but overall the company is actually enjoyable to work for and the pay is decent.
I don't disagree. I have 45 of the 50 U.S. states under my belt, and my goal is to visit all 50 before I die (and that is just for domestic travel...you didn't ask about international).
H-E-B Bakery worker here, have made the tortillas and tortilla chips and it’s tradition for me that at least once a week, I buy a bag of both that I’ve personally made. Helps make sure I keep my work quality in check, but also gives me a lil something to be proud about and enjoy after my work shifts. Thank y’all for visiting! 😁
You probably give alot of people enjoyment, comfort, and possibly medical issues caused by body weight (just joshin), good on you, it's always so wonderful seeing someone take true pride in their work.
HEB for life I was a lineman during Hurricane Harvey when it hit Texas. HEB was in every little town cooking with 18-wheelers, and mobile kitchens, feeding everyone round the clock with generators. really really made me proud of HEB and extremely impressed. it was said at the time. "I will trade you, your FEMA, American Red Cross for one Texas-based grocery store, HEB."
Our HEB flooded terribly during Harvey, and when they rebuilt they have it a whole store generator, so they were one of the only places open during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which took everyone by surprise, and they did a phenomenal job of managing inventory so they didn't run out of essentials and ice. I missed them so much when I lived out of state 😅
Which HEB has an in-store generator? @@abbyd254 I work out of the Washington Heights store (by Heights Blvd and I-10), and we always have to truck in a portable shipping container sized generator to park in the parking lot anytime disasters happen. It's what kept the store running during Beryl.
@@abbyd254 From what I understand from talking to a contractor whos company built an HEB, their requirements are that the buildings be able to act as a storm shelter, with back -up generators to power the whole store and everything. They apparently cost about twice as much as a comparable grocery store because of that.
San Antonian here. HEB has its headquarters here on the River Walk. They are an amazing corporate citizen in numerous ways, but one thing I really love is not all stores carry the exact same stuff but cater to the local community’s preferences. Also, my HEB has a barbecue restaurant that has the best brisket in town. I have lived in 6 states, and have never loved a grocery store, but I love my HEB!
I'm a Houstonian wanting to move to the PNW and I've seen so many vlogs of Texans who move out and they all say they miss the food and HEB. It seriously makes me reconsider 😂.
@@Jean-tt6on As a native Houstonian that moved to Whidbey Island, WA and lived there for 8 years, it is a truly gorgeous area of the country. I loved my time there. The scenery was breathtaking and weather was amazing April through October. The halibut, salmon, mussels, and other seafood were exquisite, and the beer scene was 10x better than Houston. Mexican food, gulf/cajun seafood, bbq, and a host of other food types are non-existent though. The people were unique and friendly enough, but there is a definite difference in the Southern hospitality you encounter in TX. Go check it out for a long vacation, you might fall in love with it as well. They both have their merits.
Definitely in Texas when random strangers are helping you out and giving you suggestions… as a Californian who get to college in Texas, I can say I’ve never talked to strangers inside a grocery store until Texas. Love the people!!!
I have travelled to the east coast and west coast. Also, states east of the west coast. I have to say that people here in the south are friendlier than anywhere else I have experienced in the U.S. I happen to also live in Texas and HEB is a good store with helpful employees.
Groceries stores are one of the best places to meet people. Great place to pick up girls. Back in the day, of course. My girl picking up days are behind me.

H-E-B is the best grocery chain in the United States. I know that may make some people balk, but after Hurricane Harvey hit my hometown, Rockport Texas, and pretty much destroyed everything, H-E-B was the first, they were here the next day, to come in and help our city. They brought in daily trailer loads of ice, food, meals, and cases of MRE’s (meals ready to eat). They were here every day all day long. That first day they also brought in a portable Cellular Tower, because all of ours were down. For the rest of my life I will be their biggest fan and toot their horn every chance I get.
Everybody forgets that Rockport got hammered by Harvey and only focused on the flooding in Houston. People also forgot we were without power for over a week. HEB was first to open up and help out, and so was Whataburger here in Portland.
in 2022, I earned a masters in emergency management and one of my major papers was on hurricane Harvey. There were actually more houses completely destroyed in the Rockport to Aransas Pass area than all of Houston. Certainly Houston had much more extensive flood damage, but there were more homes gone in the Coastal Bend area. Not only was there less publicity for this, FEMA funds were disproportionately sent to Houston partially because those small coastal towns did not have full-tim employees that could work solely on getting FEMA aid. Our little coastal towns have very small city governments. My research for the paper about Harvey was certainly eye-opening. I’m glad to hear that H-E-B stepped up like they did, as always.

It looked like it was cooler weather out, so it had to have been filmed between October/November to February/March. It would get dark like that around 5:45 or 6:30 PM. It's easy to spend an hour wandering around HEB.

(lol) Howard didn't found HEB, it was his wife, Florence Butt, who started a grocery store to try to provide for her kids after her husband became terminally ill and could no longer work. She started the company in order to provide for the family herself and named the store H-E-B after her husband. Florence ran the store from 1905 to 1919, when Florence's son Howard Junior took over after returning home from WWI. The Butt family still own H-E-B making it one of the oldest continuously family run businesses in the USA.
Ive worked at HEB for years now, Ill tell you, the customer appreciation is really what drives us to keep working. We're treated like humans, and we appreciate that with everyone that we see and help. The disaster relief program will predict and project weather disasters (mainly hurricanes) about a week out, and be on stand-by just a mere day or even hours before landfall, that way as soon as it hits we're already on the way. No store does more for their state.
Grew up in Waco where HEB was our main store. Moved to Lubbock area where an HEB was just built and opened only a few years ago. I NEVER thought I had taken anything for granted until I realized how much I missed HEB! Only thing I don’t like about the one here are the customers. They can act very entitled, rude, and snooty. It wasn’t that way in Waco
HEB workers are always so nice and cheerful and willing to actually walk you to where you need to go (aisle or car). I'm lucky I have access to one because in North Texas it's mostly Central Market and HEB is only starting to move in more locations. Although I wish they would carry the Love Dip from Central Market, that stuff is pink cream cheese based crack.
During the pandemic, HEB mandated masks to prevent the spread! Unfortunately, many people acted aggressively and threatened the employees with physical harm, so they made it optional. The HEB stores here where I live had uniformed officers at the doors in case of verbal or physical assault! I felt sorry and angry that because of the way some people acted about wearing a mask, they had to change their mask policy! They were just trying to protect their employees and customers!!😟😡
Fun facts about Blue Bell Ice Cream. It was founded in 1907 in Brenham, Texas, it being a Texas brand makes most Texans love the crap out of it like our love for Whataburger. The company had an unfortunate event in 2015, all Blue Bell manufacturing plants shut down production and they recalled 8 million gallons of ice cream due to a listeria outbreak. The company was off shelves for months. The company would have never of recovered if it were not for a very generous anonymous doner who helped the company get back on its feet. The company only relaunched with a handful of its flavors in a select few stores across the southern region. It sold out very quickly. Eventually it came back with all of its flavors in all the stores is was previously being sold in. We Texans are grateful to have our favorite creamy ice cream back.
Hi neighbor, Oklahoma City here, have gone to four different stores looking for Blue Bell brand and can only find in the Arkansas chainstores. I do not shop there regularly but will for the Dutch Chocolate and Butter Pecan. It’s the best. I know we have Braum’s here but no comparison. Wish HEB had stores in the capitol city. ❤❤
I live in Brazos Valley and we were in the first wave to get it back. I went to visit home in Dallas that November and the girl at the gas station was like “we’re getting bluebell back this week” and I was like….oh yeah yall still don’t have that 🤣

My neighbor manages half of the Sushiyas in the city; he takes quality and service VERY seriously. They are technically HEB exclusive subcontractors that have zero room for error.
Blue Bell always advertised that the reason the ice cream is so good is because the cows are so happy. Having been to Brenham TX many times, I can see why. The pastures around the area are some of the most pastoral in the entire state. It must be like heaven for a cow to graze on those gentle rolling hills.
As a Texan sometimes I get weirdly self conscious about the excessive grandeur of some Texas staples (even as I ADORE HEB and Buccees) so it's really heartening to see two people from outside of Texas be so delighted by it instead of disgusted or put off.
As a former employee at HEB, I can sincerely say that it is a great place to work! This is probably the only work environment I've been in where I truly felt like my team and my boss had my back. There's a lot of trust for the employees to get the job done right, and we take pride in doing exactly that! Working there was a wonderful experience!
When I was a kid living in TX, one of my teachers quit teaching to work at HEB. She already worked there in the summers, and when her daughter was struck by lightening and paralyzed, she needed a better paying job. I'd see her whenever we went into HEB and she always seemed so much happier there
My brother worked in the main distribution warehouse in San Antonio for 20 years. He couldn't work a forklift anymore so he had to leave. He says it was the best job he ever had.
H-E-B also has outstanding disaster response planning. Their stores were all back open almost immediately after Hurricane Beryl. I love them as a company.
Literally, after Hurricane Harvey the HEB disaster response team (yes they have an actual response team) was out helping to feed the Houston area before Red Cross was even close to getting here. A truly amazing company!
At my HEB in Magnolia, they offered a 10% discount on all frozen foods after Beryl had passed to help shoppers restock once they regained power. Most (including us) lost all fridge and freezer food.

H-E-B worker here, one thing I really love about HEB that I didn't really notice until I started working here is that each store is tailored to the local area. I live in are with a heavy Mexican population, si we sell things like pigs feet, cow tounge, LOTS of mi tienda products, and other things that a store with, say, a heavy German population wouldn't (just like they would sell things we don't have over here)> I once had a family come through the line with a frozen pig face, the face of a swine was looking up at me from the belt.
Yes! I have 2 stores near me; one caters more to the Hispanic population of that area (I stock up on dried chilies in bulk and pan dulce and spicy candy there), the other has a more diverse collection of items, but far less item counts than cultural area-specific stores. It's nice to have options!
I used to work in an area not too far from some of the most well-to-do people in town, and when you go to the HEB there it is very POSH. High-value versions of lots of products on prominent display. Nice cheeses and the like. I have a friend who has worked for HEB for over 20 years and he has worked all over town, though, and he says that location also has the worst (read: most entitled) customers.
I'm 52 and I still remember how I was traumatized as a little girl by those pig heads. My family bought 2 or 3 of them and put me in the back of the station wagon next to the frozen heads, those dead eyes staring at me.
In 2017 I drove to San Antonio from the midwest to run in a seniors track meet. I had never seen an HEB store and saw one not far from my motel. I decided to go visit and was completely amazed at the size, selection and quality of the store. I bought a small cooler and took quite a few things home before I left.
Texas native, shop at HEB two or three times per week, thank y'all for coming!! We love our HEB because of the selection, the prices, the amazing quality, and the general vibe of the store. Every time I go, the employees are in a great mood and very helpful. I will say, if you manage to go back, GET THE BRISKET QUESO. It is life-changing!!!
I'm not a native but I lived here for around 20 yrs and heb is the place to go if your on a budget for sure. Employees are nice and work efficiently. Checkout is usually fast even with long lines
Fun fact, it was actually Florence Butt that founded the store, but her son Howard when he took it over eventually changed the name to HEB. Florence started the small store in Kerrville. The Butt family are still in charge of the stores today which is why they are consistent in their products and prices. And they do so much for their community.
Next Texas visit, you have to visit HEB's fancy sister store, Central Market. It will literally blow your minds. HEB meets Waitrose meets fresh farmer's market.
@@MPR_2023 If you can afford to shop there. I tend to highly regulate myself to only get a few "luxuries" I can't get "good enough" elsewhere for half the price. HEB and Publix are probably the two most expensive "regular" grocers in the USA, with Harris Teeter not far behind. Central Market is HEB with a Markup.

HEB recommendation. Try a small bowl of the 1905 vanilla icecream with a single shot of espresso on top. Your brain will have a difficult time quantifying why it's so good.

HEB worker here, I will actually say that HEB is hands down the best grocery store chain I've ever been to, even after traveling the US and some foreign countries. even if I don't work at HEB, I will always shop there lol

It was awesome when if first opened because for weeks the bakery had bags of torn bread pieces for just about every flavor of bread they had as samples. Samples of the tortillas too. Shame you didn't go to the Cooking connection, the green tortilla soups sold there is AWESOME.

Credit card statement shows H-E-B as H.E. BUTT. Read below to see found out. When I was in college at SHSU in Huntsville, TX, I was on a low meal plan, so I went to H-E-B a few times a week usually spend less than $10, but sometimes more. I was blessed that my mom paid my credit card bill, because I knew if I would abuse it she'd stop. One day she called me and said she needed to talk to me. She mentioned that while I'm in college she understood that I would go out with friends, but she thinks I am going out too often and was concerned with the place that I am going. I was also working whole in college, so I had no idea what she was talking about, so I asked her. She said I was going to a place called, "he butt". SHE THOUGHT I WAD GOING TO A MALE STRIP CLUB multiple times a week!! I was horrified! Luckily, I had just learned about H.B. Butt in my Texas History course!! I so miss H-E-B! I laugh every time I think of it.

Let me tell you how much we Texans love Blue Bell Ice Cream. A few years ago, they unfortunately had a contamination issue which can spell death to a company, but we as a state rallied so hard behind them. There were so many memes of people sitting cross legged in front of the ice cream section where they had to be disposed of, and 'just waiting' until they came back. It's an institution here. Everybody knows their theme song and every kid has had their fair share of their ice cream cups at every single kid birthday ever, and if you were lucky enough, your school got to go to the Blue Bell Factory and get the free samples on the best field trip ever!!! We feel the same way about Blue Bell as we do about H-E-B. Just like Buc-ees, their branded items are actually really friggin' good and I love that they care about the community so much.
I heard the talk of BB ice cream for years. They've finally started selling in St.Louis two or three months ago. Cookies Cream with waffle cone bits is my fav...this month til i can move on to find another flavor. It was butter pecan or black walnut before that. Tried the banana pudding flavor but it was strange how exactly it tasted like nanner puddin. 😁. I'm glad they finally started selling in the area. We were limited to store brands(eek!) or the expensive brand sold by those two weirdos in Connecticut.
They make a couple of cobbler flavors occasionally that are fantastic too. You get real chunks of the crust and nice hints of salt that make it extra rich. Their coffee ice cream is also great.
Welcome to Texas Gentlemen! As a born and bred Texan, I'm so proud of our wonderful and expansive HEB grocery stores. When my Spanish father in law came to visit and walked into our HEB, he was in awe, like "Disneyland" awe! He truly believed it had everything you could possibly want and more!
H-E-B is the TRUE heart of Texas. Such a great, great company. A few years ago, we had a freeze in South Texas that debilitated us for a good week. And H-E-B was very helpful during that time. Even having a store or 2, give away groceries when the power went out again at the store.
We live in the Texas panhandle and we have not been blessed with an HEB yet. This is because there is not a distribution center near us. HEB promises their drivers they will be home every night. So no long runs. I respect that. We miss it, since we used to live in San Antonio, but we patiently wait for one to open their doors in Amarillo.
I love just east of Dallas, and they're just moving into this area. I miss living on the west side of the Metroplex where I could go to HEB any day of the week!

As someone born and raised in Alabama who spent a large portion of their 20s trucking from Louisiana across Texas, I am SO pumped for this. I've always said that road trips are the best way to see America.
They are every bit as good as described. My personal favorite are their "mixla" tortillas, that are made with both corn and wheat flour. You get the softness of a flour tortilla with the deeper flavor of a corn tortilla.
Thank you guys for sharing H-E-B with the world. My dad has worked for HEB nearly 30 years, and its certainly one of the best companies out there. And the store brand stuff being just as good as the name brand has always been great to have too.
same, when people talk about their grocery stores i am nope not as good as HEB, so far the ones that failed to live up to HEB for me are, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Safeway, Kroger, Albertsons, and i cannot remember the full name but in Washington a store that started with Win was owned by the employees.
ROFL I'm the opposite. Came from mediocrity and moved to Texas. Love HEB (workers are so incredibly nice) and Central Market (their love dip, bulk food sections, and massive bread selections). Although I prefer Braums ice cream over Bluebell even though they have a plant in my town. And Whataburger is freaking awesome too.

Its actually better to use something like lemonade to counteract spicy foods. The acidity of lemonade breaks down the capsaicin on your tongue faster making the spiciness fade quicker
You know these guys got something good when you're entertained by their commercials instead of skipping them like you do with most other videos. It just blows my mind when they go into a grocery store in the American South and they get recognized. And then, they make an interesting episode by just standing in the parking lot and eating the stuff they bought in the store.
A lot of times I find that the HEB brand products taste way better than the national brands. And the little yellow coupons all through the store are great because it's usually on items I would normally buy anyway. Glad y'all enjoyed it!
I knew they stood behind their store brand when they had coupons (several years ago) on the shelves where if you bought the H‑E‑B brand product, for instance corn chips, they’d give you the name brand product free! Like go ahead and compare them side by side, ours is just as good if not better. That says a lot to me.
@@Stinger913HEB is a grocery store that is only in the lower half of Texas and they even have some in Northern Mexico. It's a great store. I do hear they're breaking into the grocery market in Dallas/Fort Worth. I remember when they broke into the Houston market back in the late '90s. (It's a San Antonio company). It pretty much ran a lot of stores out of business because it's hard to compete.
I worked as a bookkeeper for H.E.B. back in the 80's. Left Texas in 87 (big mistake) and now whenever I travel back there my first stop is H.E.B. Maybe Buccee's first, then H.E.B. That lady was correct in saying that the flour tortillas are incredible. I miss shopping there.
As a native Texan, born and raised in San Antonio, I cannot explain the sense of pride you have being a Texan. I also cannot explain how home sick I get being stationed in DC, or any other time I have not been stationed in Texas. You really do not appreciate just how amazing HEB and any other "Texas" things you have at home that other states or countries don't have. I have been to many states and many countries, I have yet to find one that is better than Texas... then again, I am biased being a Texan. I always tell other people in the military that aren't from Texas, I am a Texan before I am an American, and they hate it lol

Those tortillas are the best. HEB opened a new store in the area. They made 38,000 tortillas for opening day. 38,000! You just cannot imagine how great they are.
What's kinda cool is that HEB has been handed down through the Butt family only 3-4 times and is still privately owned! So Charles Butt, one of Howard's grandsons, still works for HEB Also, the company was started by mama Florance Butt (not Howard!) way back in 1905 as a small local business that grew to be larger - in Texas - than WalMart!
Charlie doesn't "work for" the company. He's the primary share holder (owner) of the family-owned (non-publicly traded) company. He is the president of the company.

I'm a wine vendor for HEB here in San Antonio, and I LOVE being in HEBs every day. I can get breakfast and lunch there, some have a Texas BBQ restaurant inside, The Flaming Bird, or South Flo Pizza. The sushi is decent, and in the morning they have hot kolaches and empanadas they make fresh in store. Next time get a piece of Tres Leches from the bakery!
The short time I lived in Texas during college, my apartment was right next to HEB. I'm obsessed!!! I gained so much weight buying tubs of Blue Bell ice cream and pigging out on my porch. Red Velvet is my favorite

I graduated from high school in the town HEB was founded. He had seven kids, and built each one a mansion. Our town library is named after his wife's hyphenated name. BUTTHOLDSWORTH LIBRARY. It always made me laugh when I was a kid.
After living in an RV for 5 years, I can definitively tell you that you are going to hate having to clean out that toilet with that thick hard toilet paper in it. In fact, I am reliably able to predict that you will have to stop at an RV repair shop just to unclog that toilet. Addendum: For RVs, they make toilet paper that dissolves in the tank.
I was thinking the same thing! Never had an RV or had to empty a septic system in one, but my home’s 60 year old plumbing requires the septic safe stuff even though I’m on the regular city sewer system.

@@joep5080 I am assuming you may not be from the US. It is a feminine hygiene device that women use when they are on their period. Most people who never used an RV before think the toilet is like a modern city sewer system and that you can flush just about anything down it. I have heard actual people who work for the city sewer district say Tampons ®are one of their major problems for them.
When I got my drivers license at 16, one of my first destinations was my local HEB. Not to shop, but to ✨frolick✨. The employees are so kind, the shoppers are nice, great selection of anything you could possibly need, great pharmacy too. I am a Texas native, but HEB never gets old.
Life long Texan here. I straight up REFUSE to buy groceries at any other grocery store. Worked to HEB in college and they treat their employees very well. The company is also pretty much considered first responders to any local natural disasters! ❤
I traveled outside of the Texas borders a few times and while I was away, I needed to go to the local grocery store. As soon as I got back home, I wrapped my arms on the walls of the HEB because I had been SO disappointed with the other states grocery store selectin...I would like for all of the Native Texan readers of this comment to take a moment to really appreciate our great and wonderful HEB stores. I know to us (I am Native) it seems like they are always expected to be the best and I think sometimes we take that for granted. The whole company is rockin on all cylinders and if something needs attention, they get right on it. I agree, Here, Everything's Better.

Did you know during the 2021 Texas Winter Storm and Deep Freeze, there was an HEB location in Austin Texas that was opened briefly with power, letting thousands of customers in to shop because the power grid here was failing and people were low on food. The electricity went off while people were shopping and the store just let the customers leave without paying for ANYTHING. This made national news headlines all over our country. That’s my HEB! 🙏
Wow!! Of course non-Texans such as me wouldn't know that. But reading this and others about HEB coming to the rescue...if I were living there, I'd certainly shop there a lot. What an awesome company run by awesome people.
They also sold food at price right after Hurricane Harvey. A loaf of bread was 10¢ (it's usually at least $1). They also sent out food trailers to areas where people were working to clear the roads and fed people for free.
They EARN their customer loyalty.

Shoutout to Jess, she got y'all right with the Blue Bell recommendation. Beyond that, H-E-B is an institution of Texas. H-E-B has been there for Texans through hurricanes, deep freezes, all sorts of natural disasters, probably more so than Texas government officials have. Most store brands are considerably worse than name brand, but H-E-B brand may often be better than the name brand. Truly, here, everything's better.
True! They even had models that predicted what would happen with COVID grocery crazes and were prepared months in advance.

HEB is very important to Texas. It is the one company that seems to genuinely care for the community and is there to not only help the less fortunate with food, but also is usually one of the first to respond with aid whenever we are faced with natural disasters. Their original products are amazing and usually have reasonable prices not to mention daily specials and savings coupons. I love HEB so much.
I go to HEB at least 2x week…every week.
HEB keeps us fed. I use their tortilla flour to make tortillas once a week, and we keep frozen breakfast burritos made from them in the fridge. Literally the only tortilla that stands up to it perfectly without getting stale or sogfy
Agreed. I worked for Heb for 6 years and they are a really good company I only left because I had a really bad manger at my location that made very inappropriate comments to me ALL THE TIME. but overall the company is actually enjoyable to work for and the pay is decent.

H-E-B Bakery worker here, have made the tortillas and tortilla chips and it’s tradition for me that at least once a week, I buy a bag of both that I’ve personally made. Helps make sure I keep my work quality in check, but also gives me a lil something to be proud about and enjoy after my work shifts. Thank y’all for visiting! 😁

I was a lineman during Hurricane Harvey when it hit Texas. HEB was in every little town cooking with 18-wheelers, and mobile kitchens, feeding everyone round the clock with generators. really really made me proud of HEB and extremely impressed. it was said at the time.
"I will trade you, your FEMA, American Red Cross for one Texas-based grocery store, HEB."
Our HEB flooded terribly during Harvey, and when they rebuilt they have it a whole store generator, so they were one of the only places open during the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which took everyone by surprise, and they did a phenomenal job of managing inventory so they didn't run out of essentials and ice. I missed them so much when I lived out of state 😅
Which HEB has an in-store generator? @@abbyd254 I work out of the Washington Heights store (by Heights Blvd and I-10), and we always have to truck in a portable shipping container sized generator to park in the parking lot anytime disasters happen. It's what kept the store running during Beryl.
@@abbyd254 From what I understand from talking to a contractor whos company built an HEB, their requirements are that the buildings be able to act as a storm shelter, with back -up generators to power the whole store and everything. They apparently cost about twice as much as a comparable grocery store because of that.
I was just telling someone that CenterPoint Energy needs to get their disaster team to link up and take notes from HEBs!

San Antonian here. HEB has its headquarters here on the River Walk. They are an amazing corporate citizen in numerous ways, but one thing I really love is not all stores carry the exact same stuff but cater to the local community’s preferences. Also, my HEB has a barbecue restaurant that has the best brisket in town. I have lived in 6 states, and have never loved a grocery store, but I love my HEB!
Seeing these British people be amazed at Texas things I take for granted really gave me a new appreciation for the stuff I get every day

@@Jean-tt6on As a native Houstonian that moved to Whidbey Island, WA and lived there for 8 years, it is a truly gorgeous area of the country. I loved my time there. The scenery was breathtaking and weather was amazing April through October. The halibut, salmon, mussels, and other seafood were exquisite, and the beer scene was 10x better than Houston. Mexican food, gulf/cajun seafood, bbq, and a host of other food types are non-existent though. The people were unique and friendly enough, but there is a definite difference in the Southern hospitality you encounter in TX. Go check it out for a long vacation, you might fall in love with it as well. They both have their merits.
Definitely in Texas when random strangers are helping you out and giving you suggestions… as a Californian who get to college in Texas, I can say I’ve never talked to strangers inside a grocery store until Texas. Love the people!!!
I have travelled to the east coast and west coast. Also, states east of the west coast. I have to say that people here in the south are friendlier than anywhere else I have experienced in the U.S. I happen to also live in Texas and HEB is a good store with helpful employees.
I've lived in and traveled many States (including CA). Never felt any were less than friendly.
Groceries stores are one of the best places to meet people. Great place to pick up girls. Back in the day, of course. My girl picking up days are behind me.

I'm born and raised in texas but live out west now. People look at me crazy when I tell them that in texas you can make friends with random ppl at the grocery store
H-E-B is the best grocery chain in the United States. I know that may make some people balk, but after Hurricane Harvey hit my hometown, Rockport Texas, and pretty much destroyed everything, H-E-B was the first, they were here the next day, to come in and help our city. They brought in daily trailer loads of ice, food, meals, and cases of MRE’s (meals ready to eat). They were here every day all day long. That first day they also brought in a portable Cellular Tower, because all of ours were down. For the rest of my life I will be their biggest fan and toot their horn every chance I get.
Everybody forgets that Rockport got hammered by Harvey and only focused on the flooding in Houston. People also forgot we were without power for over a week. HEB was first to open up and help out, and so was Whataburger here in Portland.
I used to adore Rockport! I’m so glad they responded quickly.

in 2022, I earned a masters in emergency management and one of my major papers was on hurricane Harvey. There were actually more houses completely destroyed in the Rockport to Aransas Pass area than all of Houston. Certainly Houston had much more extensive flood damage, but there were more homes gone in the Coastal Bend area. Not only was there less publicity for this, FEMA funds were disproportionately sent to Houston partially because those small coastal towns did not have full-tim employees that could work solely on getting FEMA aid. Our little coastal towns have very small city governments. My research for the paper about Harvey was certainly eye-opening. I’m glad to hear that H-E-B stepped up like they did, as always.

It looked like it was cooler weather out, so it had to have been filmed between October/November to February/March. It would get dark like that around 5:45 or 6:30 PM. It's easy to spend an hour wandering around HEB.

Howard didn't found HEB, it was his wife, Florence Butt, who started a grocery store to try to provide for her kids after her husband became terminally ill and could no longer work. She started the company in order to provide for the family herself and named the store H-E-B after her husband. Florence ran the store from 1905 to 1919, when Florence's son Howard Junior took over after returning home from WWI. The Butt family still own H-E-B making it one of the oldest continuously family run businesses in the USA.

Ive worked at HEB for years now, Ill tell you, the customer appreciation is really what drives us to keep working. We're treated like humans, and we appreciate that with everyone that we see and help. The disaster relief program will predict and project weather disasters (mainly hurricanes) about a week out, and be on stand-by just a mere day or even hours before landfall, that way as soon as it hits we're already on the way. No store does more for their state.
Grew up in Waco where HEB was our main store. Moved to Lubbock area where an HEB was just built and opened only a few years ago. I NEVER thought I had taken anything for granted until I realized how much I missed HEB! Only thing I don’t like about the one here are the customers. They can act very entitled, rude, and snooty. It wasn’t that way in Waco
HEB workers are always so nice and cheerful and willing to actually walk you to where you need to go (aisle or car). I'm lucky I have access to one because in North Texas it's mostly Central Market and HEB is only starting to move in more locations. Although I wish they would carry the Love Dip from Central Market, that stuff is pink cream cheese based crack.
My proudest part of this is the manners of my fellow Texans. Love it.
During the pandemic, HEB mandated masks to prevent the spread! Unfortunately, many people acted aggressively and threatened the employees with physical harm, so they made it optional. The HEB stores here where I live had uniformed officers at the doors in case of verbal or physical assault! I felt sorry and angry that because of the way some people acted about wearing a mask, they had to change their mask policy! They were just trying to protect their employees and customers!!😟😡

Fun facts about Blue Bell Ice Cream. It was founded in 1907 in Brenham, Texas, it being a Texas brand makes most Texans love the crap out of it like our love for Whataburger. The company had an unfortunate event in 2015, all Blue Bell manufacturing plants shut down production and they recalled 8 million gallons of ice cream due to a listeria outbreak. The company was off shelves for months. The company would have never of recovered if it were not for a very generous anonymous doner who helped the company get back on its feet. The company only relaunched with a handful of its flavors in a select few stores across the southern region. It sold out very quickly. Eventually it came back with all of its flavors in all the stores is was previously being sold in. We Texans are grateful to have our favorite creamy ice cream back.

Hi neighbor, Oklahoma City here, have gone to four different stores looking for Blue Bell brand and can only find in the Arkansas chainstores. I do not shop there regularly but will for the Dutch Chocolate and Butter Pecan. It’s the best. I know we have Braum’s here but no comparison. Wish HEB had stores in the capitol city. ❤❤

My neighbor manages half of the Sushiyas in the city; he takes quality and service VERY seriously. They are technically HEB exclusive subcontractors that have zero room for error.

Blue Bell always advertised that the reason the ice cream is so good is because the cows are so happy. Having been to Brenham TX many times, I can see why. The pastures around the area are some of the most pastoral in the entire state. It must be like heaven for a cow to graze on those gentle rolling hills.

As a former employee at HEB, I can sincerely say that it is a great place to work! This is probably the only work environment I've been in where I truly felt like my team and my boss had my back. There's a lot of trust for the employees to get the job done right, and we take pride in doing exactly that! Working there was a wonderful experience!

When I was a kid living in TX, one of my teachers quit teaching to work at HEB. She already worked there in the summers, and when her daughter was struck by lightening and paralyzed, she needed a better paying job. I'd see her whenever we went into HEB and she always seemed so much happier there

At my HEB in Magnolia, they offered a 10% discount on all frozen foods after Beryl had passed to help shoppers restock once they regained power. Most (including us) lost all fridge and freezer food.
They were? I couldn't tell because the fucking internet was out for 3 days
I went there the night after beryl and they had everything fully stocked! They even had pallets of drinking water at the front (limit 2 ofc)

H-E-B worker here, one thing I really love about HEB that I didn't really notice until I started working here is that each store is tailored to the local area. I live in are with a heavy Mexican population, si we sell things like pigs feet, cow tounge, LOTS of mi tienda products, and other things that a store with, say, a heavy German population wouldn't (just like they would sell things we don't have over here)> I once had a family come through the line with a frozen pig face, the face of a swine was looking up at me from the belt.
Yes! I have 2 stores near me; one caters more to the Hispanic population of that area (I stock up on dried chilies in bulk and pan dulce and spicy candy there), the other has a more diverse collection of items, but far less item counts than cultural area-specific stores. It's nice to have options!
I used to work in an area not too far from some of the most well-to-do people in town, and when you go to the HEB there it is very POSH. High-value versions of lots of products on prominent display. Nice cheeses and the like. I have a friend who has worked for HEB for over 20 years and he has worked all over town, though, and he says that location also has the worst (read: most entitled) customers.

In 2017 I drove to San Antonio from the midwest to run in a seniors track meet. I had never seen an HEB store and saw one not far from my motel. I decided to go visit and was completely amazed at the size, selection and quality of the store. I bought a small cooler and took quite a few things home before I left.
Texas native, shop at HEB two or three times per week, thank y'all for coming!! We love our HEB because of the selection, the prices, the amazing quality, and the general vibe of the store. Every time I go, the employees are in a great mood and very helpful. I will say, if you manage to go back, GET THE BRISKET QUESO. It is life-changing!!!
I'm not a native but I lived here for around 20 yrs and heb is the place to go if your on a budget for sure. Employees are nice and work efficiently. Checkout is usually fast even with long lines

Fun fact, it was actually Florence Butt that founded the store, but her son Howard when he took it over eventually changed the name to HEB. Florence started the small store in Kerrville. The Butt family are still in charge of the stores today which is why they are consistent in their products and prices. And they do so much for their community.

@@MPR_2023 If you can afford to shop there. I tend to highly regulate myself to only get a few "luxuries" I can't get "good enough" elsewhere for half the price. HEB and Publix are probably the two most expensive "regular" grocers in the USA, with Harris Teeter not far behind. Central Market is HEB with a Markup.

HEB worker here, I will actually say that HEB is hands down the best grocery store chain I've ever been to, even after traveling the US and some foreign countries. even if I don't work at HEB, I will always shop there lol
the military sent me to Texas and was shocked they didn't sell liquor like the grocery stores in Cali. HEB is a good store

It was awesome when if first opened because for weeks the bakery had bags of torn bread pieces for just about every flavor of bread they had as samples. Samples of the tortillas too. Shame you didn't go to the Cooking connection, the green tortilla soups sold there is AWESOME.

When I was in college at SHSU in Huntsville, TX, I was on a low meal plan, so I went to H-E-B a few times a week usually spend less than $10, but sometimes more. I was blessed that my mom paid my credit card bill, because I knew if I would abuse it she'd stop.
One day she called me and said she needed to talk to me. She mentioned that while I'm in college she understood that I would go out with friends, but she thinks I am going out too often and was concerned with the place that I am going. I was also working whole in college, so I had no idea what she was talking about, so I asked her. She said I was going to a place called, "he butt". SHE THOUGHT I WAD GOING TO A MALE STRIP CLUB multiple times a week!!
I was horrified! Luckily, I had just learned about H.B. Butt in my Texas History course!!

Let me tell you how much we Texans love Blue Bell Ice Cream. A few years ago, they unfortunately had a contamination issue which can spell death to a company, but we as a state rallied so hard behind them. There were so many memes of people sitting cross legged in front of the ice cream section where they had to be disposed of, and 'just waiting' until they came back. It's an institution here. Everybody knows their theme song and every kid has had their fair share of their ice cream cups at every single kid birthday ever, and if you were lucky enough, your school got to go to the Blue Bell Factory and get the free samples on the best field trip ever!!! We feel the same way about Blue Bell as we do about H-E-B. Just like Buc-ees, their branded items are actually really friggin' good and I love that they care about the community so much.
I heard the talk of BB ice cream for years. They've finally started selling in St.Louis two or three months ago. Cookies Cream with waffle cone bits is my fav...this month til i can move on to find another flavor. It was butter pecan or black walnut before that. Tried the banana pudding flavor but it was strange how exactly it tasted like nanner puddin. 😁. I'm glad they finally started selling in the area. We were limited to store brands(eek!) or the expensive brand sold by those two weirdos in Connecticut.

We loved Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla especially because it tasted like our grandma’s hand churned ice cream. So good
They make a couple of cobbler flavors occasionally that are fantastic too. You get real chunks of the crust and nice hints of salt that make it extra rich. Their coffee ice cream is also great.
Welcome to Texas Gentlemen! As a born and bred Texan, I'm so proud of our wonderful and expansive HEB grocery stores. When my Spanish father in law came to visit and walked into our HEB, he was in awe, like "Disneyland" awe! He truly believed it had everything you could possibly want and more!
H-E-B is the TRUE heart of Texas. Such a great, great company.
A few years ago, we had a freeze in South Texas that debilitated us for a good week. And H-E-B was very helpful during that time. Even having a store or 2, give away groceries when the power went out again at the store.
The chicken salad grab with the fresh tortillas was the smoothest move Ollie has performed.

We live in the Texas panhandle and we have not been blessed with an HEB yet. This is because there is not a distribution center near us. HEB promises their drivers they will be home every night. So no long runs. I respect that. We miss it, since we used to live in San Antonio, but we patiently wait for one to open their doors in Amarillo.
They finally opened a few locations in north Texas recently. I suspect they are working their way up there.
United/Amigos isn't bad here...like a small baby version of HEB. lol

They are every bit as good as described. My personal favorite are their "mixla" tortillas, that are made with both corn and wheat flour. You get the softness of a flour tortilla with the deeper flavor of a corn tortilla.
Throw some cheese in between 2 and it makes an insane quesadilla. Simple, yet so rich and delicious.
You do really want those tortillas. You really, really do.

As a Texan I was surprised that all grocery stores weren't like H.E.B. When I went to Nebraska I was very underwhelmed and disappointed.😅
same, when people talk about their grocery stores i am nope not as good as HEB, so far the ones that failed to live up to HEB for me are, Fred Meyer, Meijers, Safeway, Kroger, Albertsons, and i cannot remember the full name but in Washington a store that started with Win was owned by the employees.

ROFL I'm the opposite. Came from mediocrity and moved to Texas. Love HEB (workers are so incredibly nice) and Central Market (their love dip, bulk food sections, and massive bread selections). Although I prefer Braums ice cream over Bluebell even though they have a plant in my town. And Whataburger is freaking awesome too.

Its actually better to use something like lemonade to counteract spicy foods. The acidity of lemonade breaks down the capsaicin on your tongue faster making the spiciness fade quicker
You know these guys got something good when you're entertained by their commercials instead of skipping them like you do with most other videos. It just blows my mind when they go into a grocery store in the American South and they get recognized. And then, they make an interesting episode by just standing in the parking lot and eating the stuff they bought in the store.
A lot of times I find that the HEB brand products taste way better than the national brands. And the little yellow coupons all through the store are great because it's usually on items I would normally buy anyway. Glad y'all enjoyed it!
Absolutely! The H-E-B brand sodas are half the price of name brand, but I legitimately like their version of Coca-Cola more than the real thing!
I knew they stood behind their store brand when they had coupons (several years ago) on the shelves where if you bought the H‑E‑B brand product, for instance corn chips, they’d give you the name brand product free! Like go ahead and compare them side by side, ours is just as good if not better. That says a lot to me.

I remember when they broke into the Houston market back in the late '90s. (It's a San Antonio company). It pretty much ran a lot of stores out of business because it's hard to compete.

I worked as a bookkeeper for H.E.B. back in the 80's. Left Texas in 87 (big mistake) and now whenever I travel back there my first stop is H.E.B.

As a native Texan, born and raised in San Antonio, I cannot explain the sense of pride you have being a Texan. I also cannot explain how home sick I get being stationed in DC, or any other time I have not been stationed in Texas. You really do not appreciate just how amazing HEB and any other "Texas" things you have at home that other states or countries don't have. I have been to many states and many countries, I have yet to find one that is better than Texas... then again, I am biased being a Texan. I always tell other people in the military that aren't from Texas, I am a Texan before I am an American, and they hate it lol

Those tortillas are the best. HEB opened a new store in the area. They made 38,000 tortillas for opening day. 38,000! You just cannot imagine how great they are.
What's kinda cool is that HEB has been handed down through the Butt family only 3-4 times and is still privately owned! So Charles Butt, one of Howard's grandsons, still works for HEB
Also, the company was started by mama Florance Butt (not Howard!) way back in 1905 as a small local business that grew to be larger - in Texas - than WalMart!
....and I heard the company will one day be passed down to HEB's grandson, Harry Butt. ✂️

I'm a wine vendor for HEB here in San Antonio, and I LOVE being in HEBs every day. I can get breakfast and lunch there, some have a Texas BBQ restaurant inside, The Flaming Bird, or South Flo Pizza. The sushi is decent, and in the morning they have hot kolaches and empanadas they make fresh in store. Next time get a piece of Tres Leches from the bakery!

I was so stoked to see that they carry the Coppola reds. Hands down, my favorite.
If you’re lucky, they will sell quatro leche cake( regular tres leche but with dulce de leche on top). It’s absolutely amazing!!

After living in an RV for 5 years, I can definitively tell you that you are going to hate having to clean out that toilet with that thick hard toilet paper in it. In fact, I am reliably able to predict that you will have to stop at an RV repair shop just to unclog that toilet.
Addendum: For RVs, they make toilet paper that dissolves in the tank.
I was thinking the same thing! Never had an RV or had to empty a septic system in one, but my home’s 60 year old plumbing requires the septic safe stuff even though I’m on the regular city sewer system.

@@joep5080 I am assuming you may not be from the US. It is a feminine hygiene device that women use when they are on their period. Most people who never used an RV before think the toilet is like a modern city sewer system and that you can flush just about anything down it. I have heard actual people who work for the city sewer district say Tampons ®are one of their major problems for them.
When I got my drivers license at 16, one of my first destinations was my local HEB. Not to shop, but to ✨frolick✨. The employees are so kind, the shoppers are nice, great selection of anything you could possibly need, great pharmacy too. I am a Texas native, but HEB never gets old.
When they opened the Texas Starry Night ice cream, was I the only one who automatically said THE STARS AT NIGHT ARE BIG & BRIGHT 👏👏👏👏

Life long Texan here. I straight up REFUSE to buy groceries at any other grocery store. Worked to HEB in college and they treat their employees very well. The company is also pretty much considered first responders to any local natural disasters! ❤

I traveled outside of the Texas borders a few times and while I was away, I needed to go to the local grocery store. As soon as I got back home, I wrapped my arms on the walls of the HEB because I had been SO disappointed with the other states grocery store selectin...I would like for all of the Native Texan readers of this comment to take a moment to really appreciate our great and wonderful HEB stores. I know to us (I am Native) it seems like they are always expected to be the best and I think sometimes we take that for granted. The whole company is rockin on all cylinders and if something needs attention, they get right on it. I agree, Here, Everything's Better.
