Great video, well executed, lots of time and thoughtfulness went into something very personal. His videos are what they are, they’re just there. Your videos, they are at a level ONLY YOU can do for many reasons.

I faced a similar issue and I did not speak up. I'm glad you did because you've done it in a much more articulate way that I could have. Next time I feel like talking about plagiarism and inspiration, I'll send people over to this video. Thank you so much for posting.

I want to keep echoing what I've said before on your videos, you are an awesome source of inspiration, I'm sad to see someone thought you were a source for plagiarism. I see so many comments about how people picked up OP-1 because of your inspiring videos, and I'm just one of the lucky few to have done so as well. Sad you have to go through this, but believe me, there's no copy out there that is near as good at this, as you. I know that might not dampen the blow of someone plagiarizing you, but to me it speaks of the strength of what you do - you do with such quality that can only come from living your idea - not simply copying it. In short, I'm with ya 100% on this topic, well spoken!

Jeremy, I'm a late 20-something former school-musician who regrets moving away from music discipline and has sworn up and down that I'd get started at making something for years. After I found your channel I was heavily inspired to just get f***ing started. Seeing your techniques and skill made me engage with music learning like I hadn't before.
I'm still working on it - it's really hard when my rusty woodwind fingers are noodles on a keyboard and I'm tired from work, but I'm still working on it. I finally finished my first composition (that I'll never release)! I will fight tooth and nail for that desire to make music that resonates with how I feel.
I just wanted to say, you inspire me. Thank you! Please don't be discouraged. I hope this experience ends up being something that enriches your experience and helps you endure in the future too.
Thanks for being you. Keep up the good work.

    Thank you very much Jeremy.
Both for your excellent body of work, and this careful dissertation on the present topic.
Indeed this not only serves to be informative, but also presents your case well on this matter.
Certainly in some cases the old adage of "imitation is the best form of flattery" may apply.
However, it is apparent this is not the case with the current offender.
I would agree, this stinks of plagiarism.
It is a testament to your integrity to respond to it in this capacity.

I'm extremely glad that this video came out, recently your videos have been helping me with all sorts of things like theory and making new sounds to put in my music, I was even considering saving up for an OP-1 just because it looks like a lot of fun. You have a distinct style and that other guy can grab hold of a big fat lawsuit if you really wanted him to. You are an inspiration to artists everywhere and even if I don't make the same type of music, it's helping me more than anything other than school to watch someone create a full track in such an organic way.

As an artist myself this is something that's been on my mind for over 2 decades now. It's that internal struggle of being inspired by art, which is all around us everywhere, and wanting to execute your own version of something but knowing you need to make it your own. That is the most important step. We always said in art school, bad artists copy, good artists steal. What is the difference? When you steal something you take from someone else and make it your own. Jimmy Hendrix covering All Along the Watchtower. It's what you said exactly, fold it into your next project. Make it your own, there are still a lot of unique and interesting choices you can make after borrowing an idea. Once you start making all those choices, the thing art thing starts to become a different idea, still based on the inspiration, but slowly becoming different and personal. What this guy did was just straight rip off. He brought zero new ideas to the table. I would personally be embarrassed if you could tell where I borrowed from or I didn't reference the origin of the idea, that is, give credit where credit is due. Great video Jeremy.

  • @JBHinCJBH
    @JBHinCJBH 5 лет назад +4

    Ace video Jeremy 👍
I find that when I try and copy someone it end's up sounding nothing like what I was trying to copy, so it is just inspiration to make some music in the end, it is just that something that got me started.
If i feel my music sounds like a poor imitation of something I was obsessed with and trying to emulate I usually spend a bit of time listening to 70's dub reggae and 70's punk, this usually gets me out of my rut and makes me forget about what I was obsessed with, point being it could be 60's soul and heavy metal but it makes you move away from the constriction you thought you had.
I find your music hugely inspirational but my music sounds nothing like yours at all, but you quite often give me the urge to turn on my gear and make some noise.
    Thanks 👍😎

Schools/universities should reference this. I've known many people who believed paraphrasing isn't plagiarism, while adding nothing of their own to the end product. If you're inspired by something, you should have enough respect for the creator to at least give them a call out. They'll likely be honored that they provided inspiration, and you won't have a shameful shadow hanging over your work.

Thank you for bringing this up, Jeremy. I understand from an artistic perspective it hurts and all, but for your own mental wellbeing you can look at it this way: someone deemed your style so good they copied it. That mere fact proves what you're doing is awesome, and other people like it. So take some pride in it and forget about it. The copycat will always be the copycat, don't worry about that, and they will attract an audience that might not even be your target audience. The ones who know who you are will always be able to tell. Peace out.

After a couple minutes of watching I realized it wasn't, not so much because I saw the channel title, but because it wasn't quite as... good. “Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from - it’s where you take them to." - Jim Jarmusch

I'm glad you quite rightly got that off your chest. You can be flattered by somebody being inspired, but the second it steps into those murky waters, it turns sour. Plus, I think the Pickle Rick sample thing shows it's a grab for numbers. Pickle Rick is the Spiderpig of Rick and Morty. It can be condensed down enough to be a cheap standalone bite the people will instantly recognise outside of any context.

Its so easy to get overwhelmed by the plethora of sounds we have available to us in this digital world. It's so easy to get paralyzed by all of those options and never complete a project. Seeing your method of experimenting with tones makes it seem so much less daunting. Just make the sounds, commit, and move on to the next project. That's my biggest take away form your content anyway.

The digitone explorations and music you've done lately have been especially awesome, which is all the more impressive because you said you did them out of creative block/frustration.

I actually had the opportunity to buy a new op-1 a while ago for $600 but I didn't because to me it's your identity and I couldn't see myself using it on a video without feeling that I'm stealing you. In fact, I made a simple video with the Ableton Push (Flying Over Osaka) that takes some of these ideas and somebody made a comment about "reminds me of Red..." and I replied that of course, I'm not hiding it and I was trying to find my style in it. I still couldn't find it and I never have enough time to continue publishing, but never say never. Thanks for your inspiration!

When I saw Yuri's first OP1 video, I liked it. Yeah, the style was basically the same as yours, but hell, you found the best way to present the OP1 and explain what you're doing. It's the natural way to show off the OP1 and explain it without a voiceover wasting a bunch of time. That style should be the starting point for any OP1 how-to. And it was neat to see how, in using the same style, Yuri's own viewpoint came out, commenting on different things and highlighting different parts of production from you. There were hundreds of comments condemning him for ripping you off, but I felt like it was a nice place to start. And then he kept going, and he never changed or grew. "recording to red" seemed like a cute reference to you at first, but it quickly became obvious that this wan't just using your style as a starting point, it was just... using your style. In the beginning, I thought it was just some no-name guy getting started with the op1. Discovering that's he's a "viral video" guy makes me disgusted with the whole thing.

Red means recording, that's why I'm here and I saw his videos once or twice yes, but it's dull and soulless. Please don't be discouraged you're one of the most creative people I know, just after me of course ;P Love ya !

Hey Jeremy, been a fan for about two plus years now. Listening to you discuss a challenging issue like being plagiarized has helped me respect you as a decent human being, more than just a provider of dope, unique content. These conclusions of mine are largely based on your apparent effort to make this video constructive, rationally thought out, and with a achievable call to action at the end. Lastly, I strongly agree on your specific call to action; making the efforts to cite and inform your sources of inspiration for the part they played is, I think, a path that would simply change this music industry for the better, bit by bit, person by person. A much better idea than today's conventional methods of doxing and publicly shaming.
So thank you for pushing up that high road Jeremy. No pressure to make just OP-1 videos, this is your gig and we, the audience get the privilege to watch you perform however you choose.
    -James

i come from a local community of miniature model painters, where everyone knows everyone and we all have our own siganture look when we paint a model.
one of my past friends had become so obsessively inspired by a national painter that he started working towards learning how to do that style, but in doing so, he lost his own painting identity and all he would do was this one inspired style. the problem was that once he had lost his own style to add to that inspired style, it started looking liek bad copies of the inspirational artist.
fast forward a few months and the original artist actually saw my friends stuff being posted on IG and roasted him really badly, knocking that its bad copies, not original at all and looks like his trying to make money off the original inspirations style without bringing any quality with it.
said friend since stopped posting on social media due to being burned by the artist he looked up to, but no one locally felt so bad for him because we kept telling him it looked like copying instead of inspiration.
this video describes his whole experience.

I was wondering when this was gonna come up. You inspired me to buy an op1 and share it’s magical-ness with as many people as I can! It’s terrible that someone would take your formula and pervert it with just making beats around a sample and calling it good. It’s not even close to the work you put in to your music. People will do anything to make a quick buck I guess...
Thank you for being an inspiration to many of us!

I remember seeing the video and I was like oh hey it's Red Means Recording! But then the sound was a bit off and I realized it was a lot sloppier than your usual stuff. And was absolutely blown away that it was another person using your idea

It was great hearing you speak about your experience in a very constructive way. I imagine that a lot of people rage on their channels and I admire you being a bigger person in your situation.
Love watching your stuff man ❤️

Really enjoying what you're doing Jeremy. Your music is fantastic - heartfelt, soulful. Rhythms that are alive and breathing coming from a box full of transistors.
The way you address this - with tact and grace, exposes you as an exceptional human being. Keep it up, man. You're doing great work.

it's exhausting to see all this people trying to grow their channels with no purpose or intention to create content that is worthwhile. something that transcends youtube and sickens me, specially when it comes to businesses that should know better.
the originality of your work is what i will always enjoy. cheers J!

I actually thought the Tropic Thunder video was yours until I tried to find it again and looked on your channel and couldn't find it. And while it's a decent video, once I realized it wasn't you, I bailed on that channel immediately. So it's good to see you're aware of this and commented on it. Cheers, keep up the great work.

Jeremy. I don’t want to lie to you, I watched his OP-1 videos (never subbed but it was in my recommended), just because i like OP-1 videos, ofc, and couldn’t resist not watching them. At the same time, I realized this, glad you spoke about it and so he stops this and apologize. I hope you keep your channel active (i also have to admit i didn’t have more videos to watch from u and that’s when i started watching everyone else’s LOL) hahaha but definitely congrats for your channel, you’re definitely the true hero and plagiarism is definitely not a good ting. You deserve the best, love u and ur wholesomeness! We will keep supporting you and hoping for new music from u!

I watched maybe one of Yuri's videos and I couldn't continue. To me the plagiaristic signs were obvious, but what really turned me off was the quality. There is something special, something magical about your videos, like a part of you is in each one. What you make is amazing. I came here for the OP-1 vids but stayed because of all the amazing music you've made (I really like your Digitakt videos :)). If it's any solace in this whole thing, I know that people will find your channel because, at the end of the day, there's a part of your soul in your music.
