Finding this video 4 years late, it's incredibly helpful in terms of approaching live sets, in a way that isn't too gear specific. Thanks for the inspiration!
Dude, I love what you do, and how deeply you understand it. Had a workshop accident and the best of my guitar playing days are over. But this, this gives me hope that I could actually properly make music again. Wish good fortune to you in these troubled times.
I love that you broke this down in a way that isn't necessarily specific to the "elektron workflow" or any other hardware. Makes it easier to apply this advice to any live setup! Great job as always. Red Means Running A Tight Ship.
Thanks! Very reassuring to hear you say you get overwhelmed easily and that's why you have so many grooveboxes. That sounds a lot like me! But with less grooveboxes! :)
I'm late to the party. I still need to comment what a wonderful time & world we live in that there are artists like you sharing knowledge like yours. Thank you 👍
It's so great to hear someone who gets it. Some fantastic structural and compositional ideas for live performance here. Live performance can be so nerve-racking, especially when people come up to you *during your performance* and just start talking to you like you're DJing. (lol) I use a Deluge and Machine+ (with a Hapax on the way) for live performance of psytrance, which as a music style is always rapidly changing, so being super-prepared and rehearsed is key. Again, so refreshing to hear from someone who keenly understands how hard this stuff is to pull off. Thanks Jeremy.
Some very good points here, having the song structure automated can be great as it alleviates some pressure, but again depends on what you’re going for.. if you’re playing a club you might want to jam on a part of a song for an extended amount of time in which case you need the control. Using an external synth like the Microfreak or minilogueXD that have a “knob per function” approach is great so you can actively change parameters on the fly without having to change channel selections on your main sequencer (say OPZ or Digitakt) but also the improvisation side is invaluable. Thanks for everything you do for the community ❤️
Love the minimalism of this setup. I'm super introvert and could never put myself in front of an audience and play but I love to see how you can compensate for that by trying to make your session minimalistic. Thanks for sharing these tips!
Oh and I would love it if you did another presentation at Patchwerks! I attended your presentation on generative composition a few months back and had an awesome time.
Thank you for your excellent insights. I know what it's like having performance nerves- but the need for expression and creativity is stronger and I feel that nerves make for a better performance (as long as you understand that feeling nervous is entirely normal and that many pro level performers feel nerves before every performance, though they can hide them).
This is probably the best video I’ve seen on the live performance topic. There aren’t enough of these so thank you. Very meat and potatoes, very straightforward. Thank you for your effort.
excellent live tips. I am glad that you switched to Elektron boxes, they’re perfect for live performances. I’ve been using them exclusively for my sets, and every day I have a new breakthrough with how to use them. And the muscle memory is easy developed :-)
I love the Microfreak. I would like to have mine sequenced over playing it. This is a great tutorial. I will watch this again, and again after the Elektron Rytm arrives.
Once again, an actually useful video without all the extra fluff. Always wondered what was considered “enough” when producing/performing a live set, so this really helps. Hoping to try a live set soon!
Really appreciate this video! I have been figuring out how to present the Digitakt Live and your use with Microfreak was what I needed! By the way that pattern you created is just great. Very Calming.
Mate that was one of the best talks on performance i have come across, thank you. Thinking about the digitakt for myself and potentially getting two to use with a central mixer... bit like DJing with two groove boxes!
This was a great watch. I feel like after a few years with groove box’s I evolved a format similar to this. Minimize equipment and maximize control of your machine. I learned from this vid. To think of parts in mute groups is a great idea. Good stuff thank you for taking the time to put something out like this.
Thanks for this Jeremy, it is really interesting to see the evolution of your approach, workflow & music gear used for hybrid live sets over the last 9 years. I have learned a lot from your channel, and you explain things quite well. Keep on rockin!
Being around DJ's a lot has peaked my interest in playing for crowds, but i'm no DJ. Though I am a pianist and producer, that's why I am investing time in setting up a live set, this helps me so much! Thank you!
Just discovered this video and it is super insightful as I'm currently looking for some companions to build a live set around my Digitone, which I just love. This video has given me so many inspirations, so many thanks for that! 💚
After watching 20 Digitakt videos and loving the thing but having no idea if I could ever get anything cool out of it... this video made me buy one. Super helpful stuff!!!
It’s the best. You can run/sequence a huge synth setup with it in the center as a drum machine. Or a small setup. Just stick to it, as it is challenging in the beginning, but then it reveals it’s true power. I almost sold it, now I’m so glad I didn’t. One day it just klicked.
Thanks, what a wonderful presentation it was super helpful. As of now I am learning a few machines, I’m not quite ready for anything live yet but the idea of doing so is right there waiting for me. Your insight is a beacon of hope....
Super helpful video as always. Thanks for posting! I’m really getting used to making music this way in studio, but definitely still figuring out how the heck to do it live, especially cuz I’m a singer also, which…makes it a bit trickier to manage. Maybe I should just 100% sequence my backing tracks in Live’s arrangement mode and just hit play 😅
good video! My personal approach to performing is to keep in touch with the audience. Luckily I have my tuba that serves me very well in terms of sound and aesthetics. Greetings from Vienna!
Dude. So many great tips! Thank you for sharing - this was a great learning experience for me! I love your music - can't wait to see what's next. Bravo! Edit: JUST WATCHED TIGHT SHIP!!!! Damn that's good!
just take the fucking pressure off!! i'm approaching my first solo live shows and i'm so nervous. but my goto has to be: less is more! thank you jeremy
Thanks so much for putting this video out! Really interesting to see how others have developed their workflows, and the similarities and differences to mine :) Gotta admit I laughed when step 1 was "make it interesting" haha
Holy sh*t, dude, this is so helpful! Can you do like a long - winded crash course in like a seminar format? I know something like that would take a ton of time, but I would be super interested in it. It would be great to have the bulk of the information on your channel all in one place.
I don´t plan to play live for people, but this kinda helped me on how to approach the playing itself (organize your shit!) And that little lesson about muting was very nice (nearly the same takeaway: organize your shit!).
Great and informative video, but one important point is missing: how do you approach multiple tracks, muting elements of single ones and mixing them with the next track etc. Do you use banks and patterns? Maybe a video around this? :)
For live sets I ended up producing tracks in Ableton and then using the audio with the octatrack while making the beat on the digitakt and adding the analog 4 to switch between synth lines/basses and making transitions interesting. That way you can mangle your sound the way you feel like in the moment and mute/play with effects/get into the parameters on the A4 for build ups, breaks and releases. You can even carry your gear around in a backpack because it is so reduced :)
Subscribed! After several videos. That was excellent! Im about to do a live electronica set & i was planning to make everything up as i Go! Perhaps I'll rethink that.. ;)
Thanks dude super informative. Just got a drum brute impact and I'm already worried about where the heck my hands are going to go next! Plan on adding a looping station to free me up live because I'm trying to go 100% live possible with real instruments...wish me luck!
This was super rad to watch! I've been trying something similar with the OP-Z and an iPad using AUM. Never done an IRL live performance though, relate to that nervousness.
Great video! If only our prayers were answered and they put a proper song mode on the Digitakt. I know why they haven't but it's a great sequencer so should have it!
I believe you could also use the digitakts midi sequencing to control the microfreak. This is the route I’m trying to go,but with the opz sequencing the Digitone. Unfortunately, I have yet figure out how to get program change to work, so I only have to switch patterns from one device. For now I have to change each device manually. That’s where I’m currently at. Regardless, thanks for this great video!
For me live set up is a hardware 2 sides, akin to two turntables. Except, 1 side is Circuit and MonoStation on one side, and the Digitone and Digitakt on the other side., a song is generally those pairs 1 at a time. What I use for details are the Model Sample and Microfreak with both set ups as for the leads and fx. I also have the ipAd with Samplr, Borderlands, and ANimoog cued up. That's just me.
Finding this video 4 years late, it's incredibly helpful in terms of approaching live sets, in a way that isn't too gear specific. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love how much you're pumping out right now, but please make sure not to overwork yourself!
Dude, I love what you do, and how deeply you understand it. Had a workshop accident and the best of my guitar playing days are over. But this, this gives me hope that I could actually properly make music again. Wish good fortune to you in these troubled times.
Oh shit homie, that sucks. Hope you can find other ways to channel your creativity.

mute groups and pre sequenced effects are my go to. still trying to get comfortable playing the keys 🙌
that beat on the digitakt is so so sweet and bouncy 🤤

true!! hahaha

Great choice man, have funnnnn

me too. you do great work.
Wow, thank you so much!
This is probably the best video I’ve seen on the live performance topic. There aren’t enough of these so thank you. Very meat and potatoes, very straightforward. Thank you for your effort.
I don't wanna have a panic attack when I'm just trying to play some music. Major advice for live performances, thanks man.

I just keep coming back to this video for more tips on building my set
Digitakt is the best thing Elektron has ever made. Loved hearing how you have come to use it, as my way is the same but different.
excellent live tips. I am glad that you switched to Elektron boxes, they’re perfect for live performances. I’ve been using them exclusively for my sets, and every day I have a new breakthrough with how to use them. And the muscle memory is easy developed :-)
Yeah some things are the same but switching (or bringing one back into the flock) is like ... "oh wait, you're that one with scenes" :)
I love the Microfreak. I would like to have mine sequenced over playing it. This is a great tutorial. I will watch this again, and again after the Elektron Rytm arrives.

Thanks Jeremy! Great stuff! Really fan of what you do! Thank you thank you!
That was very interesting! It's amazing how much you can get out of one machine... (Digitakt).
it's so powerful!
Very well done Jeremy!
Thanks for asking that question. Even though I do not own the gear presented, I learned a lot. Cheers!
@@richerlariviere The little lesson about muting alone was worth it.

Thanks for this Jeremy, it is really interesting to see the evolution of your approach, workflow & music gear used for hybrid live sets over the last 9 years. I have learned a lot from your channel, and you explain things quite well. Keep on rockin!

this was incredibly clear and enlightening! I want a Digitakt!!!
the 3 elektron devices is smth Stimming did very well on the Cercle video :)
I'm only half way of the video and surely can say it's already most valuable video around the case! (and probably I have seen them all)
why is everyone concerned with how many videos this man is making, let the artist do what the artist does.... Art or Die.
Such a fantastic overview of options! Thank you! Super helpful
Great tips man. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
Thanks, what a wonderful presentation it was super helpful. As of now
I am learning a few machines, I’m not quite ready for anything live yet but
the idea of doing so is right there waiting for me. Your insight is a beacon of hope....
Really inspiring how much you get out of your Digitakt alone. Your videos always make me want to shed gear instead of buy more. Great stuff.
I also like the immediacy of hq fx pedals such as the H9 or Strymon for live performances.
