Shot Rifleman my first Appleseed in 2020. Went again about a week ago. I guess you only get the Rifleman patch once, the next step is Distinguished, with a score of 240 with a scope. Well I got 237 for the weekend, gonna have to try again. My brother who didn't make Rifleman last year, did this year...with my rifle. We're happy about that, and plan to attend more clinics, and bring more people.
On that note, one thing I'll say about the sling set up: Put the quick release buckle the other way. Flip it over so the opening is down toward the ground. The pointed end of the flipper still points toward the buttstock. That way, you can grab that tag end, pull it down and away from you and flip the buckle open. Then during a course of fire, don't put it through the 2 little ears that keep it straight. It'll work fine. For me, it was faster that way to adjust the sling. Also, you'll have the smoother part of the buckle touching you if you carry it muzzle up. During the Appleseed, I actually put the loop on, and just detached the quick swivel from the fore end of the stock till it was time to shoot. But, as far as hasty vs loop goes, I shot a 50 on stage 1 Standing, with a hasty setup super tight. Only looped for prone. Marlin 795 Appleseed LTR, Boyd's Spike Camp stock, 1 inch extended via slip on recoil pad, 10 round mags, and Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 in Weaver rimfire rings, CCI SV LRN

These videos are great - as a new shooter, I really appreciate the fact that no topic is considered too small to talk about. I think details like slings matter, and we have to learn somewhere, so these videos are tremendously helpful. Thank you!

  • @1bobharvey

I always made 3 marks on the inside of mine with a black sharpie in the usmc. 1 on the inside for carry, 1 for kneeling length, 1 for prone adjustment. Made getting it set quickly and the same every time a snap. Love me a loop sling. People highly underestimate how accurate they can be hunting with the help of a very light sling vs carrying a heavy bipod or tripod. Also a piece of 550 cord attaced to the upper rifle swivel as a chest strap for carry is great in the woods for not having to readjust while walking.

    Thank you for the video.
I have been preparing for an Appleseed event and all my rifles with the cotton GI sling, I still had the metal clip on it clipped to the sling swivels.
I watched through the install and set up of the sling about 5 times to get my rifle slings set up correctly.
You helped me avoid the secret snickering of the instructors and RSO's about the slings being set up incorrectly.
Now we won't look like total rookies.

Thanks so much for your lesson on the marksman sling I never knew it could be used for more than a carry strap. Your video got me thinking of my father who was a marine raider during WWII, he didn’t talk about the war much but one thing he did recount is when they would shoot the bar on full auto they would unlatch the sling from the butt, put it on the ground and step on it while firing. It’s a good day when I think about my dad- thank you. Thank you 🙏🏻

My father was a tank mechanic during WW2 and would regularly have to go out past the front lines to pick up and drop off tanks to the forward deployed tank units wherever they were. Most of the time tanks would bypass German strongholds to attack and hold strategic positions. The guys that had to pick up knocked out tanks and drop off reconditioned ones had to "deal with" these bypassed German positions to get were they needed to be. It was called "running the gauntlet" and not a real safe place to be. A great book to read on this subject is call "Death Traps by Belton Y. Cooper" who was an officer in one of the WW2 Ordinance Companies that was also attached to the 3rd Armored Division as was my father. All his life he loved the M1 Carbine and used nothing but the old WW2 cotton slings. Because I'm 70 years old and was raised and taught how to hunt by my father, and uncles who were all also WW2 vets I have used nothing but the old cotton slings. I still have my dads J.C. Higgins Model 51 30-06 that was built by Fabrique National with a Mauser style action and a High Standard 22″ chrome lined barrel he bought from Sears back in the early 60's. I have kept his old WW2 cotton sling on it that is stenciled 1944...

I am a new shooter and after first watching this video last week, I ordered one of these cotton slings and installed it as per your instructions here, but I had to change one thing. That metal piece that you use for adjustment was cutting into my shoulder, even after shifting it up or down a few inches. I just couldn't find a spot for it to sit comfortably anywhere on my shoulder area, so I re-installed it with the sharp side pointing outward and now it feels great. I may get ridiculed at the gun range, but at least it won't hurt me :). Thank you for the valuable information. I knew I needed a sling but had no idea what to get until I saw this video, and I am loving that sling. Also thank you for demonstrating the Hasty Sling method. Loving that too.

Thanks for another fine video lesson. My dad, who after WWII was a bushman and later an outfitter in the Canadian northwest, left a box of 7 or 8 of these all neatly rolled up when he died. They're dark brown rather than olive green, and if I recall correctly they're from the Canadian Army. I can't verify that - no markings, and he was RCAF not Army. However, there were many surplus items available after the war. Otherwise they're pretty much identical to what you have there, and fortunately still in excellent condition. With that background, I learned a few basic skills pretty early, and having a sling like this on a rifle was certainly one. I've gotten away from using this invaluable piece of kit over the last several years, but I still have 4 or 5 brand new in a box, so I'll be having a "sling party" for a few rifles this weekend . Thanks again for all of the excellent practical advice you present - it's greatly appreciated.

GB, I'm sorry for the long delay in replying. I can only plead extenuating circumstances! First of all, the short answer to your question is "yes" - I'd be glad to get one of those slings to you, once I have my hands on them. And therein lies the tale.
I recently moved into a new house, and my unpacking has been slow because of some pressing family business. Anyhow, after we discussed slings, I realized that not only had I not unpacked the slings, but I had not unpacked and set up much of my reloading bench. Some of that stuff was in boxes temporarily stored in the garage, and I've got a nice reloading bench space all set in the basement of the new house.
Realizing winter is coming, I decided it was high time to get that particular job done. And ran into a wee setback. I'd carried a number of boxes in and downstairs with no problem, and was headed out to the garage for another. At which point I fell off my new one-step-high back porch (the back door at my old house was level access). I didn't fall far, but far enough that I have 7 fractures in the bones of my left arm and wrist. When I got up off the ground, my forearm had about a 40 degree bend where none should have been, and I thought, "That can't be good." It didn't hurt - yet - but I figured I'd best call the ambulance right quick. I made a proper mess of it, no two ways about it. I feel sooooo dumb.
Since my last visit here, I've been in hospital twice and have had 3 O.R. sessions with an orthopaedic surgeon - the plates that were put in look like something borrowed from the Queen Mary. I'm now in a shoulder-to-fingers cast. and I'll be wearing that for at least two months. After that I'll get a below-the-elbow cast for 6-8 weeks. (As my surgeon said, "No 3-gun for you this fall, boyo"). My activities are going to be limited for a while. Just to put the icing on, I'm not 100% sure which box all my slings and holsters are in - just that I hadn't found it yet.
So, I'll be glad to send you a sling, but I'm sorry to say there's going to be a bit of a delay. I guess I'll have lots of time to catch up on all the RUclips videos about bullet casting and reloading. This is not quite what I'd planned for the rest of my summer. I can't even use the excuse of slipping on the ice - I just put my foot on a step that wasn't there.

Thanks so much for posting this. I just bought this type sling from Ammo Garand off eBay. The one I got was just under 50" sewn but it's plenty long enough for the Savage 64F I put it on. The buckle for adjusting length was too tight in the tabs to pass the sling through twice so I had to rebend them with the aid of a punch and a vise. I don't think I would have figured out to remove the rattle clamp and how to assemble and install without these instructions. Thanks Again!

Simple, cheap, affective! I don’t hunt, but I go to the range regularly. I find that shooting from the bench gets boring. It’s fun to try different shooting positions using a sling. It’s also much easier to work the bolt or lever since the sling keeps the rifle from sliding off my shoulder.

Thank you for all you do. I consider myself a somewhat articulate person, but the words escape me right now for how much I enjoy watching your videos and learning from you. And I'm not a young kid who just fell off a turnip truck.
You have been doing this now for a few years, with, as of this writing, 64K subscribers. I wonder if you have a sense just how valuable these videos are and the contributions you are making. I imagine you have several legacies in your life… these videos are another. They will live on long after you're gone, and if preserved properly they can provide generations to come knowledge that could otherwise be lost. For that reason, and the volatility of RUclips, particularly on firearm subjects, I would encourage you to ensure these videos are additionally stored elsewhere, with an appropriate methodology for their safekeeping.
    Be well.

Hey buddy- WFL here. I just wanted to get some info on slings for my Mossberg 500- so I checked your video- and found the simplicity of the sling was best explained by you! There are other videos- but yours is the best! So I’m setting up my sling with your help- much appreciated! I also watch your videos over and over again to make sure I don’t miss anything! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for this wonderful video. I have always loved these Web Slings. I buy mine from Rob at Ammo Garand, very well made. I have seen many of these slings with a quick release clip that is noisy and seems like it can scratch the stock easily. I love how you show how to connect the sling without this clip and how to use it as a loop. It seems so much better your way. Love watching these videos!

Yet another high quality video of wisdom. I really appreciate this and looking forward to getting out and practicing once I get one of these slings. Just need to find an outfit that ships to New Zealand. The hugely variable country we have to hunt here necessitates such ingenuity and adaptation.

All excellent tips, thank you! I've had quite a number of slings, some of which were ridiculous, most of which were highly impractical. This one certainly seems to be the most useful, and probably the most comfortable! I've just ordered one and am looking forward to using it. All the best to you!

The sling is to a long gun (rifle) as the holster is to a handgun....

    Thanks.
After a 40 year hiatus, I'm again taking up an outdoor hobby of my youth.
I'd returned the nylon sling I bought when I picked up the rifle (a 7mm-08 S&W) a couple of weeks previous, immediately I saw your video.
And I just received an M41 cotton sling and swivel pair for that new [deer hunting] rifle a few minutes ago.
And just finished rewatching the video, (between pauses lol) and setting up the sling exactly per your instructions. I'll practice with it over the next few days (and thereafter occasionally), until I develop the usual "muscle memory".
Anyways, I just wanted go on record saying I find all your videos informative & invaluable learning opportunities , and just wanted to say how much I appreciate the effort you've put in sharing your experience and expertise.

Fantastic video and thanks for making it. I just put a 10/22 together for my son to learn marksmanship and attend an Appleseed event and made several of the mistakes you mentioned while setting up the sling. This made the sling make way more sense.
