The Big Boy Is well, one big boy, and im glad one is preserved, i dont really have any backstory on it, it's just an awesome steam locomotive.

The Big Boy isn't one steam engine, he's actually two steam engines sewn together as one, hence the two sets of outside cylinders and eight driving wheels. The smaller Challenger version is also two steam engines sewn together, with two sets of outside cylinders and six driving wheels. Hope that helps.

there are actually eight preserved 4014 is in Excursion service with the Union Pacific Which the Big Boys were originally built for between 1941 and 1944 in two groups by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) for the Exculsive use of the Union Pacific They stayed in Revenue service until 1962 the one you featured is actually still in existence as one of the preserved big Boys on display in Nebraska
They were to originally be named the Wasatch Class locomotives as they were designed to pull heavy frieght trains over the Wasatch mountain range however an ALCO Worker Chalked Big Boy on the smokebox and the name stuck While Horsepower is not really a thing for Locomotives The horsepower of a big boy has been calculated to over 7,000 the main stat for judging a locomotives power however is called Tractive effort and the big boys had a Tractive effort of 35,000 Foot Pounds! The Union pacific Rail workers noted how much they loved the big boys for how "Sure Footed" and User Friendly when compared to other power on the railroad
