This song is one that hits me hard everytime I hear it. It has brought me to tears several times. You have to know the history of how the colonizers devised and executed their plan to overthrow the Hawaiian Monarchy and how Hawai'i was stolen from the Hawaiian people to get the true impact of this song. It also speaks about how Hawai'i has become more urbanized and how the changes may not be what is in Hawai'i's best interest. This song really has a deep emotional meaning to everyone that was born and raised in Hawai'i.
The chorus he sings “ ua mau ke ea o ka aina I ka pono o hawaii” is our Hawaiian motto which means “ the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness”… Hawaiians have taken care and lived off the land and sea for over a thousand years and what foreigners have been doing goes against what we Hawaiians have been standing for for over a thousand years and Hawaiians are still trying to fight for this belief everyday. Tourists are so disrespectful to our land and sea and animals and constant modern change threatens our way of life and culture. Our next generations are gonna be in great danger of losing wverything. Our land is dying and being suffocated by the modern city life and it’s very sad for our people to watch. The tears he shed is just an example of the pain we Hawaiians feel about how we failed our islands
The only State in our great Union where BOTH the State Moto and State Song are written entirely in another language other than English. The life of the Land is perpetual in [by] righteousness
I am so sorry what has happen to hawaii and Maui. I have always loved the people and culture of hawaii but now it cuts even deeper. My wife is devastated by what happen and I feel her pain. I stand with the people and want justice for the people of Maui.
@@UltraSaltyDomer1776 Imua Ohana. Mahalo
@@byronharano2391 justice for the people.
@@UltraSaltyDomer1776 Yes! Absolutely! Don't let this die. I have not live in Hawai'i truly after enlisting in the USN back in 1983. I returned from 2004 - 2008 and currently live in Huachuca City, Arizona. Still, this pains me since Hawai'i is truly home. Blessings of Jesus my fellow KamaAina
For me this is a top 10 song ever. The way he taps into the ancestors feelings. I feel his sadness. I feel him trying to warn the people of hawaii about losing their cultural. What a great song.
I love the fact that you decided to check out the late Hawaiian legend, brada IZ. And yes, every city/town/landscape you see is all Hawai’i, this song is all about how our culture and land is changing drastically in a very tragic way. Much mahalo for your genuine curiosity of our culture and displaying your reaction for your viewers 🤙🏽
The song starts with "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono" which means "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. It is the Hawaiian state motto first spoken by King Kamehameha III in the 1840s. The song is about how the land has been taken from the Hawaiian people and how his ancestors would react if they saw all the changes. The song is applicable to all indigenous people who lost their lands.
Just found your page, love your reactions and commentary, I’m a part native Hawaiian born and raised on the island of Maui. We don’t like the word Jawaiian hear in the islands but I see why people refer to it is such. Some other artists I’d love to see you react to from Hawaii would be Braddah Waltah, Fiji, Ekolu, and there’s so much more but definitely I good place to start. Also the green is one of my favorite local music bands and their song “How does it feel” is super deep and gets me in the feels every time. Just like every song from IZ.
The lady with the pink pants on at 8:31 is my gramma’s sister😭😭😭…
The words in this song are very powerful, added with the beloved Braddah Iz’s beautiful voice. Great song choice. Peace love aloha
He’s already big he won a Grammy his songs made it to shallow Hal and other music
a gem from here in the islands
What your listening too is a very sad song (hence the tears)! It’s talking about a people (NativeHawaiians/Kanaka Maoli) who are forcibly losing their culture/land/way of life/identity. He’s singing/telling about the old/ancient Hawaii (which was ruled by a monarchy of Hawaiian descent) in comparison to the modern Hawaii we now see/know which is now governed by foreigners of the State of Hawaii and the USA. Basically saying would this demise of my people/culture and homeland still be happening if Native Hawaiians we’re still in charge/ruling their own land/peoples/future? It’s pretty much a story/song of genocide and how they keep forcibly (against the Native people’s will) taking away everything from the indigenous people of Hawaii forever changing their trajectory!
The pictures in the video are depicting the modern Hawaii with an emphasis on the changes we now see in comparison to old Hawaii. The first one with the aerial views of buildings is the state capitol. Across the street from the capitol is what we now know as the governors mansion, which was originally home to the last reigning queen of Hawaii who was imprisoned there by the USA until her death! Across the street from that is the Queens Medical Center/hospital which was built and started by another monarch Queen Emma and her husband King Liholiho. In ancient times the land in that area was owned by the monarchy, today (modern times) it’s owned by the state-including everything that was started/built/funded/owned by Hawaii’s past monarchs!
BTW my favorite songs from Bruddah Iz is “Margarita” and “In This Life”!
Even more heartbreaking is when he sings/says “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono” it’s almost like a cry/plead begging for those who hear to help! Basically saying where is the righteousness of the land that my forefathers or ancestors ruled this place by because what’s happening now to my people/home is by far not right/righteous!
I'm a Hawaiian that was raised in Houston. A co-worker, who's been to Hawaii several times, said that he thought Iam would be the next Iz. I almost slapped the shit out of him. I had to let him know that was borderline disrespectful!! Iz will always be on another level!!
😂
I love IZZY...beautiful...♥️♥️
Man i always get goosebumps when i here Braddah IZ voice. Rip Unko IZ Hawai’i misses you!!
Your looking at modern hawaii and how its changed to big citys and city lights compared to old hawaiian lands and how it was and should have been
Bro, as much as I love Israel's version of 'Somewhere over the rainbow' , i have been waiting for someone to react to more of his discography.
Iz was part of the group, Makaha Sins of Ni'ihau. One of my favorite albums is Makaha Bash 3: Live at the Shell. Check it out!
He’s singing about if our kings and queens came back and saw the modern world, they would cry because their land was stolen by the missionaries and the United States government.
I love your channel. I only started watching you ever since you covered Iam. I live in a small town on Maui called Hans. Ive been also watching your videos on the Pacific island reggae and i noticed you only played male performers but can you watch some females singers from Hawaii. They are showing old Hawaiian culture and the modern city life in Hawaii
Mahalo braddah fab!!!
You should listen to "In this life" by IZ, one of my favorites...
Yes they are
One my favorites by Braddah Iz is his song In This Life or White Sandy Beach or his cover of Take me home country road which the haku collection used to make small changes to fit it to bringing Iam home.
Small history lesson our king Kamehameha conquered the islands to unite Hawaii under one ruler. And after a couple generations past the American foreigners held our Queen hostage threatening genocide to all Hawaiians as Hawaiians didn’t have guns to fight back. The only way was to fight with our superior hand to hand combat. But the Americans brought diseases to Hawaii that already wiped out 2/3 of the Hawaiian population and the leaders didn’t want our Hawaiian bloodline to be wiped out completely so she surrendered to prevent anymore bloodlines to be wiped out. Then the Americans stole all of our land and till this day are trying to wipeout our culture and desecrating our sacred lands. Very sad last 300 years and we still fighting to get land back that was stolen from us for our families.
That’s why I don’t trust what happen in Maui. I think it was more of the same. Taking land from the people. I hope the Hawaiian people fight back. I be ok with them becoming their own country. I am glad they are with us but I am not happy with how the American government is treating them. I stand with hawaii.
You do realize Kamehameha slaughtered Kalanikupule troops at the Pali ,modern people like to think it was some beautiful unification but wasn't it really the same thing as other conquering invaders

Bruduh IZ RIP!
Basically this song is about how Hawaiians of old would cry if they saw what hawaii has become. Cry for the land cry for the people
They is the King and queen of the islands of Hawaii?
This song is a very powerful song about how the king and queens would feel about what hawaii is becoming. All the islands that the king conquered uniting the hawaiian people and how the white man stole the islands from the native people and Americanizing the land the king and queens would be sad to see the state of the lands. This song is a very powerful song to the hawaiian people.
If you do make it to Hawaii make sure you don't touch the turtles or you pay a big find.
This is my first watch with you...thank you! One question...you keep referring to another as "Em" or something similar...can you run me onto that person please? I'm interested!
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
If just for a day our king and queen
Would visit all these islands and saw everything
How would they feel about the changes of our land
Could you just imagine if they were around
And saw highways on their sacred grounds
How would they feel about this modern city life
Tears would come from each others eyes
As they would stop to realize
That our people are in great great danger now
How, would they feel
Could their smiles be content, then cry
Cry for the gods, cry for the people
Cry for the land that was taken away
And then yet you'll find, Hawai'i
Could you just imagine they came back
And saw traffic lights and railroad tracks
How would they feel about this modern city life
Tears would come from each others eyes
As they would stop to realize
That our land is in great great danger now
All the fighting that the king had done
To conquer all these islands now these condominiums
How would he feel if he saw Hawai'i nei
How, would he feel
Would his smile be content, then cry
Cry for the gods, cry for the people
Cry for the land that was taken away
And then yet you'll find, Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
Ua mau, ke ea o ka aina, i ka pono, o Hawai'i
