Greeks and Romans (also some english religious groups)were more accepting of expression and sexuality and so were often demonized or even persecuted by some that opposed that sort of "air". A good example of this is how Quakers were demonized and persecuted/killed for their freedom of expression that automatically translated to witch. Often one of the above or more have been used derogitorily due to the past distaste for certain groups of people that don't meet the"norm".
I don't think the commentator was using it with prior knowledge in mind and he/she was likely just a very ignorant person that is just throwing their inner hatred towards something.

My cousin came out in the 70s before I was born. I remember him growing up, he was never flamboyant, but he always had a lilt to his voice and a bit of pep in his step.
