Just so you know, the first book in the dark tower series is not the best and it isn't until the second book (the drawing of the three) that the series really gets going.
Don't be put off, the gunslinger is very good, I'm totally puzzled by the negativity, but I read the 2003 version. To be honest, I preferred it to the drawing of the three, I preferred it's pacing, and the darkmans speech toward the end of the book is just brilliant.
