@Zombiesnyder13 But it wasn't just the troubled production. Every detail that came out about the film was rejected by most fans, particularly when they announced it was going to be a dark and gritty body horror film, in stark contrast to the tone of the comics. Then they changed Victor Von Doom from a dictator to an Internet troll, changed his name to Victor Domashev, etc.

Fantastic Four should have been a real breakthrough for Kate Mara, putting her on the A-list, but alas. She's been stuck in either supporting roles or leading smaller independent films or TV shows ever since. And we're all poorer for it. There are so many roles I'd rather have seen her in than whoever ended up actually doing it (what about Kate Mara as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genysis?) but this reality is just not the reality that happened in.

Within a couple of years, Cimino made Heaven's Gate, Spielberg made 1941 and Coppola made One From The Heart. None of them made money, two of them bankrupted their studios, and the critics had a lot of fun laughing at the 70s "young guns" coming unstuck.

3:41 Cutthroat Island scared studios off of the Pirate genre for a full 8 years before Disney rolled the dice with POTC. Renny Harlan's career was in shambles because of Cutthroat Island, but his and Geena Davis' next movie, The Long Kiss Goodnight is still one of the greatest action movies ever made, so saying Davis couldn't be an action star holds absolutely no water. She made Charlie Baltimore an ice skating, gun toting, sure shot badass. It didn't hurt to have Samuel Jackson as her co-star and a script by Shane Black, but Geena Davis was an action star!! I wish we could have seen her in more action roles, because she would have slayed!!

The story I heard about John Carter's marketing was that the film was intended to jump start a Disney sci-fi franchise, but it timed out almost exactly with the company's purchase of Lucasfilm, so they bailed on giving the marketing campaigns any budget. The Kessel Run was a fix to the original. A Parsec is a distance not a time. So when Han claimed to do the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs it was a mistake. Like saying "I ran 10 miles in only 5 miles" made no sense. So in Solo they changed it to "taking a shortcut." This may be the only reason why they made Solo--- to keep Lucas from looking like a dumbass.

Not to mention wonder woman first big apperance. Lex & Doomsday apperances & cameos from other JL members. I would of changed a good amount of the film. Like not making supes a dark character or doing metallo instead of a psuedo doomsday. Not making Batman a killer but a brutal vigilante. Justice League - I lost interest in the DC movies quite a while back. Where the MCU seemed to be a mostly cohesive world, the DCU just seemed like a mish-mash of movies that were supposed to be connected, and kinda, sorta were, but with an ever changing cast of Batman actors, and movies that don't fit, but after included anyway (Shazam). I took one look at the giant CGI fest that was Aquaman and said no thanks. Plus you have movies like the confusingly named suicide squad movies that casual viewers don't even know were supposed to be set in the same universe. At least I think they're set in the same universe. The DCU is just a mess.
Solo: A Star Wars Story - A perfect demonstration of the FACT that studio executives are incapable of judging quality and that they see all movies of a given genre as being interchangeable. Star Wars became as big as it is because of George Lucas, his vision and his care in crafting the movies (special editions not withstanding). So the studio just assumed that if you take the characters, write a quick story and slap the Star Wars name on it, it will be just as successful as any of the other films. After all, if all movies of a given genre are interchangeable, and you don't look at quality, there's no reason it shouldn't succeed, right?

Justice League tried to introduce too many characters at once. Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg were all dropped in with next to no introduction and both the antagonist and the key MacGuffin (three magic boxes) were just there with minimal explanation.
In contrast, nearly every part of Avengers Assemble had already been introduced: Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and Captain America all had at least one solo film and Agent Coulson, Nick Fury, Black Widow and Hawkeye all had prominent roles in at least one of those; the main villain Loki was a key part of Thor and the MacGuffin (tesseract) was a key part of Captain America, all that was required was, well, assembling them all in one place since most of the exposition had already been done.
The first person I think of when I hear “John Carter” is the doctor in ER.

If Josh Trank taught us anything, is that you can't go from a low-budget movie to a big-budget movie
You need to go from low to medium, and then from medium to big
Is all about gaining credibility. You never know when a studio is gonna think they can control you.
You need to show them that you know what you're doing, better than them.

    • @cosmicmcmoon5773
      @cosmicmcmoon5773 9 месяцев назад

I think Trank would've been better off working with Max Landis on a Chronicle trilogy with each sequel upping the budget & VFX gradually, and then *maybe* they work on bigger IPs depending on the reception

Batman v Superman is one of my favorite movies to watch. Yes it’s flawed but it hits me right in my sweet spot. At the time it came out I wasn’t looking at critics bashing it online. All I remember was being 15 years old walking out of the theater feeling like my life had changed and that was the most epic movie experience ever. I constantly debate the “comic accurate” zealouts who love to hate on the film. Crazy shit happens in comic books all the time. It can be dark, bizarre, and random but still be a good comic- yet a movie can’t?
Don’t waste your time debating me in the comments, my mind won’t be changed

What, no ISHTAR? The biggest no BS failure or the 1980's? Do you think that all cinema history starts in 2000? ISHTAR was famous for being an absolute stinker of a movie that cost the studio a significant amount of money to make and brought back less ROI than any film in history to that point, and damaged the careers of Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman. The film lost 40 million 1980's dollars which was likely more that any of these did adjusted for inflation.

  • @NightHawke

Justice League was kinda lame, but I submit it's because of the MASSIVE shift in tone from Man Of Steel and Batman V. Superman. I have yet to see Zack Snyder's Justice League, but I'll put cash on it actually maintaining the serious tone of the previous films. And given its length, all the too-rushed bits are probably fleshed out as well. The real question is why folks didn't go for BVS, which I thought was a great follow-on to MOS, and I didn't even watch the extended cut of THAT movie.
I'll accept that there wasn't much of an audience for Speed Racer, though I can't imagine why. But FOR that niche, man, that was one FANTASTIC film! It was a near-perfect adaptation of the original anime, yet they were still able to craft a compelling story and put in a WHOLE lot of heart. It's the most family-oriented and family-friendly blockbuster since The Incredibles! And all the money is right up there on the screen, almost to a fault with how dazzling they were. They should have marketed this movie hard towards the little boys, because much like the series, this is for them and the adult men who are still in touch with their boyhood (in a good way).
The first Fantastic Four movie was pretty good. Not a blockbuster and could have used a once-over by a good comic scribe, but it wasn't an embarrassment. Rise Of The Silver Surfer just didn't lean hard enough into the source material. If they'd simply gone point by point with the original appearance of the Surfer and Galactus in the comics, it would have rocked. The reboot actually didn't go MCU enough. The formula for many of the Phase 1 movies was to interweave the classic hero origins with the rewritten ones made for the Ultimate universe origins for the same characters. Fantastic Four 2015 didn't adhere close enough to the revamped Ultimate Fantastic Four origin, so it lost focus and ruined a great plot. And no, we didn't need a Black Johnny Storm to distract further from the plot.
Well, crash and burn though it did, I liked BVS. It was a thoughtful, logical follow-on to MOS, and it did a great job of opening that particular world up to include more heroes, as well as realistically dealing with the aftermath and repercussions of the Kryptonian assault on Earth. In fact, I was a little ticked at myself for buying into the line of the critics for both pictures and not having seen them earlier than I did. Fun, happy, jokey MCU movies they were not, and given how even that mega-franchise started dissolving mid-way through Phase 3, so much the better. I wish folks hadn't gone in expecting what they weren't going to get. Maybe the whole Justice League debacle and the subsequent destruction of the DCEU could have been avoided.
