Cape Breton Travel Guide | Cabot Trail Road Trip in Nova Scotia, Canada

- In this video, we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes, this time visiting Cape Breton, a large island in Nova Scotia that is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Canso. During our visit, we stayed in a converted barn, hiked the trails of the Cape Breton Highlands, and drove around 300 kilometres on the world-famous Cabot Trail that borders the island.
Our first day kicked off early with a drive up to Cape Breton Highlands National Park. We spent 2 days hiking the various trails and searching for the elusive moose. The funniest moment of that hike: there were signs with bear warnings throughout the park so I think that was on the back of everyone’s mind, and of course Togo was walking upfront because he insists on leading the pack. Well, there was a group of hikers coming from the opposite direction and when Togo was the first one to round the bend all by his lonesome self, the hikers saw his black furry face and thought he was a bear! Poor Togo looked really confused - he just wanted to greet the group of hikers.
Of course, no trip to Cape Breton would have been complete without driving the world-famous Cabot Trail, which is named after John Cabot, or Giovanni Caboto, an Italian navigator and explorer, who was one of the first Europeans of modern times to reach North America in 1497. Cabot had been denied support for his expedition in Spain and Portugal, so he went to England, where he received financial support from Henry the Seventh. Cabot's plan was to reach Asia by sailing west along the North Atlantic and he estimated that this route could be shorter and faster than the one recently discovered by Columbus. The exact location of his arrival in North America is unknown, but today the route that borders Cape Breton is named after him.
During our trip to Cape Breton, we also visited the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site in Baddeck. Alexander Graham Bell is best known as the inventor of the telephone, but he also invented the photophone, the metal detector, the hydrofoil, and he designed the Silver Dart which made the first aircraft flight in Canada. Perhaps more interesting is that apart from all these great inventions, Bell devoted most of his life to teaching the deaf, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. We really enjoyed this museum and would highly recommend it if you’re in the area.
That's a little taste of our trip to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia! We hope you enjoyed this video and we'll see you in the next episode where we continue our road trip through the Canadian Maritimes. Next up: Prince Edward Island!

Hey guys, it was really nice meeting you in the Co-Op lol
Totally random, but awesome. Glad to see you introduce Cheticamp to a larger portion of the world.
Thanks Riley! Great to meet you as well. How did the rest of your trip go?
Hello and greetings from a Brit in Berlin. I spent over 25 years of my life in Bristol, UK, from where Cabot sailed to the "New Founde Lande" as he called it, in his tiny ship the "Matthew". They built a replica "Matthew" in 1997, and sailed the thing to Canada and back - the crew enjoyed themselves although they said on such a ship it was impossible to keep dry. Also worth noting that Bristol also has a problem with the tidal range, second only to the Bay of Fundy in Canada. And Bristolians will tell you that America isn't named after Amerigo Vespucci, but after Cabot's financial manager, a Welshman named Rhysiart ap Meryck. (!!) Keep up the good work, folks - and Togo is a star!
Thank you very much Keith! Incredible to learn more of the history from you. What a journey it must have been back then. We'd love to visit Bristol someday. Do you get to revisit often from Berlin?
I used to visit a couple of times a year to see friends, but nowadays they come here. Quite honestly, with Brexit looming, I prefer to stay in Germany, and I now have an unlimited residence permit. Next month I have a Citizenship test with a view to obtaining German nationality. Bristol's a great city, all the same - not only the Cabot links, but Isambard Kingdom Brunel's famous steamship the "Great Britain" (launched 1843) is a dry dock where she was originally built - first large passenger ship in the world with a screw propellor rather than paddles and she started life on transatlantic voyages. There are also old buildings associated with R L Stevenson's "Treasure Island" and Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" - the latter based on a true story when Captain Woodes-Rogers sailed from Bristol around the world and found a Scot, Alexander Selkirk, marooned on Juan Fernandez Island. And don't forget Brunel's wonderful Clifton Suspension Bridge........OK, I could go on - I used to be a tourist guide for South-West England, but moved to Berlin in 2007 and worked as a guide here until I retired!
Thank you for your detailed itinerary. We're taking your tips and planning our road trip to the maritimes this year.
Loved this video. Such a beautiful area of Canada.
Thanks Mom! We loved Cape Breton. Personally, from all of the places we visited on this trip I liked Cape Breton the most.
that is so much fun you had there...water and all
Thank you! We sure had fun with Togo being the champion.
Great views 💕 Love the way you guys enjoyed 🦋
Thanks Jubin! We had so much fun.
Togo the bear. The fiercest creature in the forest. He will lick your face off. But that is truly beautiful natural scenery.
Hahaha...that is so funny Anne! Beware of those licks. Run as fast as you can!
You must come back to my island. You didn't stay long enough to experience the culture and so much more!
Thanks Cathy! We're actually hoping to come next year if possible. Anything in particular we should do?
Beautiful Video !! Thank you for sharing !!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
You are Welcome
I absolutely love you’re channel! In fact I would say you are my favourite channel!

Thanks Raylene! That means a lot to us coming from a local. Anywhere you'd suggest we visit next time?
@@samuelandaudrey if you're referring to Cape Breton Island yes. There is Louisbourg ( historical fortress) Baddeck ( creator of phone) , so many waterfalls... With the time you had I think you covered and detailed beautifully our Island... it's a lot of driving...
Beautiful and romantic!
Thank you very much!
Awesome vid! Cape Breton rules!!
Thank you very much! We just loved visiting.
We have moose swim across the lake, and we had mother and baby walk across our beach .
Lots of moose here.

Samuel's father is a beautiful person!
Thank you very much Jose!
Sam says regarding moose 'I've never seen one on foot, I've only seen one from a vehicle before" Yes Sam... the moose are very good drivers.LOL!!!
Hahaha!!!!
Hola Audrey, Samuel y mi contemporáneo Daniel, les quiero comentar que junto a mi esposa Marisa, mucho disfrutamos de vuestros videos y solemos tepertirlos
Muchas gracias Joaquin!
Beautiful! I wonder how it is there in the winter time.
Thanks Tatsuya! It must be cold but it would be beautiful when covered in snow.
And I love Togo!!
Thanks Marcela! Not a road trip without him....lol
Where did you get the Tims? The Tims in Cheticamp was only open for a short time and now closed. Baddeck is my birthplace. I live on the mainland now. You did a marvelous video and I feel I am travelling with you. Thanks a lot.
We grabbed it on our way to Baddeck at a gas station.
loved the video! Looking to get to Canada 2022.
That is really exciting to hear John!
Farmer’s use to make my favourite ice cream of all times! Ginger ... Ginger ice cream is the absolute best. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find it for awhile and it appears they may have discontinued making it ... which would be very sad 😢.
Ah, I wish I could have tried the ginger one!! Wow!
@22:38, you're on the end of my street! Beach Crossing Rd. :)
Ah, that is so cool to hear! We just loved our time in Cape Breton.
Beautiful video!
How many hours did it take to drive the whole Cabot Trail, with your stops/hikes?
It took us the better part of a day and we also returned to do more a second day. If you have 2 days that would be ideal.
Roughly 3 hours
Did you guys skip the Skyline trail? That is amont the best trails that gives you an incredible view. Try it out next time. Si no la hicieron y regresan no se van arrepentir.
Saludos desde Montreal.
Ahh, we had to skip it because it's the only trail that doesn't allow dogs.
Nice video and nice place too, could you please tell me why nobody swims there? How many grades is the water in summer?
Good question! It must be cold water.
My island is paradise.....welcome
Thanks Nancy! It sure is! We loved it there.
I've enjoyed the video. What a beautiful place, Cap Breton. Hope one day I can visit. Can I ask you what kind of camera you used for recording? Thanks in advance, cheers from Brazil.
I've just seen it: lol - GH5 and G7X, great cams!
Thank you! Hope you can visit soon. We also now have a G9 which is a bit cheaper than a GH5 but has nearly the same features.
Thanks for taking time to respond and for the hint on the new camera G9. Yeah, I do hope to go soon. Keep up with the excellent job! Cheers!
My one visit to the Buttereau trail, it seemed we were being tracked by a pack of coyotes or coywolves. Added a bit of adrenaline to the walk :-}
Woah! That is intense. Glad you were safe.
Hiking driving ya know being hot 🔥
Seeing your video ,I want to move to Cape Breton .Love your videos Sam and Audrey
I felt the same way Irfan! I could easily live there.
Where did you stay in Cape Breton. Which place and how many days need in that place
One fantastic place to stay are the cabins at Hector’s Point in Iona.
Hoping to do this drive in a couple of months (First week of October) - I've read a number of comments about the lack of washroom facilities on the cabot trail - how was your experience - were there many in HIghland Provincial Park?? The rest of the trail - thanks - really enjoy your Vlogs - take care.....
We had no trouble finding washrooms along the Cabot Trail - there was always a gas station or coffee shop along the way, plus also public washrooms once we entered the national park. You can pick up a map at the visitor centre once you enter the park and that'll show you which trails have bathroom facilities.
WOW - thanks for taking the time to reply to my question - really appreciated.....my wife feels a lot better now with that info - If you are ever coming down to the Niagara Falls area - please let us know - we're about 1 mile from the "Falls" and Marineland - would love to show you around a bit and treat you to a supper - take care - safe travels......P.S. - we love your dog.....
Ba-DECK
I'm more a wine than a beer person, but CB has two great breweries (you sampled one), and there are a dozen(??) more on the mainland. Not to mention some very good distilleries, on and off CB :-)
That is great to hear! NB has a really good craft beer scene now as well.
@@samuelandaudrey Hmmm...have to visit then :-) Have only driven through a couple times.
Need Korean food 24/7. That ice cream looks good.
We've been making kimchi fried rice at home to get our fix :)
Yeah, this is too good to watch, but what happened to your Indian episodes Sam? :-)
Thanks Dhanu! They'll still be coming out :)
My friend wants to know if the father of the guy is available.
He's still happily married. Thanks for asking though.
👏👏👏👏👏😊
Thank you very much!

Actually Antonio Meucci invented the telephone
Thanks for letting us know.
Seriously, you didn’t get to the fort at Louisbourg?
Not on this visit. This trip was more about driving the Cabot Trail and the Fortress of Louisbourg is quiiiite the detour. 😉
Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos my girl friend and i biked around the island and was very impressed with the construction of the fort. Mind you this was in 1975 so God knows what it is like today. Thanks for replying. :)
great video but that isn't one of the biggest lakes in Canada lol
Thank you! Had to look it up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lakes_of_Canada#Canada's_largest_lakes
It is 47th. Not near the top but considering how many lakes are in Canada still quite substantial.
What month is best to visit Nova Scotia?
I'd recommend in late summer or fall. If you don't mind cooler weather the autumn colors are gorgeous around mid-October.
good video but the food it's not italian food ...i came from Rome and the spaghetti like you called it,it's different we usually eat here ciao ciao
Oh boy, hikers who some how believe that their dog does not to be leashed when hiking on public trails.
Way better than new brunswick in cape breton
;)
Errata Corrige : *Antonio Meucci* invented the telephone in the 1871. Not Bell.
Thanks for the correction.
Which one is more beautiful NB or NS?
On a personal level (sam speaking) I loved CB the most on this entire road trip. Others liked NB and PEI also was a favorite which is coming out next.
@@samuelandaudrey
CB?!
Did you mean by CB BC ( British Columbia or QC (Quebec)?
Mubarak Beri CB refers to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
I never been to canada before i live in the Untied states
