- South African bakkie buyers are very brand loyal, which is why it would take a lot for a new bakkie brand to disrupt the establishment - many have tried and failed. However, there is a trio of new bakkies on the horizon - produced by Hyundai, Great Wall Motor (GWM) and LDV - that could change consumers' minds, because these bakkies offer something notably different to what's currently available in the market.
The upcoming second-gen Hyundai Santa Cruz will be built in right-hand-drive guise, which will make it viable for our market. As it has a unibody platform, as opposed to a traditional ladder-frame chassis, the Santa Cruz is not a workhorse, but a stylish and fairly practical lifestyle bakkie.

Next up is the supersized GWM P500 double-cab, which is expected to arrive in South Africa at some point in 2024. The P500 is almost 5.5-metres long and 2 metres wide, powered by a 2.0-litre turbopetrol hybrid engine and will sit above the P-Series bakkie in GWM's local line-up.

And finally, Chinese bakkie brand LDV recently launched its T60 range in South Africa. The top versions of this keenly priced, attractively styled and well-specced double cab is powered by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine that is notably more powerful (160 kW) than the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder bi-turbodiesel in the Ford Ranger and the 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbodiesel in the Toyota Hilux!

An LDV "ute" rusted so badly in Brisbane Oz, that the owner tried to take it back, LDV (unsurprisingly) threw him under the bus, the owner went to court and was successful in getting his money back. The judge commented that the "ute" was made of poor quality steel. The problem with the Chinese automakers is that we as consumers are left to fight them if we are foolish enough to pick them over locally produced vehicles from locally based manufacturers. The old Afrikaans saying "goedkoop is duurkoop" applies with any Chinese vehicle.
That GWM P500 will have a lot of road presence!
Stuck on the side ?😂
That hyundai will definitely sell
As John Cadogan would put it: “None of those bakkies will give me a teepee in my pants.”
1:30 by far the best moment of the video! ;-)
Thanks for the summary.
Like this comment if you think its time for a haircut.
I don’t need a haircut yet
1000 likes on Dave's comment and he will shave his head!
Let's go with new hairstyle. 😊
No bakkie can be taken seriously if it does not have a single cab option.
Dave is too cool for his job
Is the Peugeot Landtrek not based on the or a rebadged LDV bakkie?
They're much cheaper than the price/s shown, but still haven't sold much.
I see the LDV selling, it is priced very well.
Any news about the launch of the new Toyota Hilux with the new platform, new engines and new technology.
When BYD Shark coming to SA?
DAVE THE BAKKIE GUY!
That has a nice ring to it. Partners Approved.
I wonder how I missed this one
I do not think the santa cruz (which i love) is really geared to take isuzu and toyota bakkie people its, in my mind more for the lifestile person and maybe weekend diyer. maybe the mountain biker or the surfer or the dude that builds and paints over the weekend.
a Chinese 2.0d for R760k😂 never in my life. You can have a Ranger for that money
Its irrelevant in south Africa what chassis a bakkie is built on since like 4x4 most yuppies never go off road and most bakkies only carry the local shopping from fruit & veg.
The majority of South African bakkie owners use their bakkies.
I grew up in rural Limpopo, you basically go off everytime you drive
Come on man. Where is the Toyota Hilux champ from Indonesia?
Half ton Bakkie coming back to South Africa, Really Dave?
Give me a 1400 Datsus rather
Change the channel to MK, you'll get your subscribers
😂😂😂😂 But they might have the army visit them.
Almont all Chinese vehicle brands are knock offs of established brands.
But much better value for money. The normal run of the mill range available here are hideously expensive, and are not your ideal workhorses. I'll buy a Mahindra over any of them, because I can do work with it, the German SUV in the garage is for recreation and holidays.
Nope !
Saw new toytota champ in thailand takes the price for the ugliest bakkie
view number 3!!!!!1
All 3 are rubbish 👎🏻
They haven't even arrived on sa roads yet (except the LDV). Are you brand loyal to the current offerings?
@plaxci I'm a diesel mechanic and have seen what I've seen. The Chinese vehicles look all solid and good when they're new, but they just don't last. They're quite quick to start rusting at the coast, and the durability over time just isn't there. Gwm and Hyundai have been in South Africa for a long time, and Hyundai/Kia is not on par with the Japanese. Ldv is just another knock-off brand.
So true@@labourlawact7826
All are crap
hyundai is actually exporting that waste of space that is the Santa Cruz😂.its expensive and hardly has a tray, the Saveiro is much better than this as a bakkie.
im dissapointed that GWM didnt give it its proper name King Kong Cannon but at least its an option that people have that cant get their hands on a F150.
so LDV is moving further west, interesting 🤔.
